Make a Confetti Bomb - Wired How-To Wiki
november 2010 by rtopitt
Here's a simple set of instructions for making a tiny confetti bomb out of materials you've probably got lying around the office or home. It doesn't spray a huge amount of confetti everywhere like a high-powered, pyrotechnic-assisted cannon. But it's cheap, it makes a terrible mess and it goes off with a satisfying bang, so it's the next-best thing.

MAKE contributing illustrator Tim Lillis sent me pics of his friend George Schnakenberg's Banksy painting costume, and I'm totally having costume envy over here. Hands down my favorite getup from this Halloween. Here's a comparison pic of George's costume versus the original Banksy "Flower Thrower" painting:

iPhone Photography - iPhoneography, just another iPhone photography blog - iPhone Journal - Skin your iPhone like a Lomo
september 2010 by rtopitt
Following my post about skinning your iPhone 4 to look like a Leica camera, blog reader Kevin Kethcart decided to skin his like a Lomo, saying "A few weeks ago iPhoneography.com posted an article about skinning an iPhone 4 to look like a Leica. Well, I've always been a fan of the Lomo LC-A, so I went that route. I used skinit.com to make the skin."

Lately, I've had a few requests to put up a tutorial on the papercut portraits I've been doing, so here it is. Fair warning, it's longish at 10 minutes and 30 seconds because I was trying to be as thorough as possible. I hope you find it useful.

march 2010 by rtopitt
Making my way through the swarm of DSLR toting macheads I finally got to the booth to find beaming LADIG members handing out these fantastic cutout bounce cards. The version I got was offset printed on nice card stock. You just cut along the outside edge of the black area and attach Tab A, Tab B, and the Back to your flash with sticky back velcro and you're good to go.

john abella » Camera Sling / Luma Loop Re:Make
february 2010 by rtopitt
In December 2009, Luma Labs introduced the Luma Loop, an over-the-shoulder camera sling system meant to make carrying an SLR easier for long periods of time. The Luma Loop has gotten good reviews, and was definitely interesting to me since I tend to bring my camera out often with heavy glass on it. The system is similar in look and function to Black Rapid’s R-Strap system as well. I’m also always interested in trying to make things like this on my own whenever possible. Below is a small description and some pictures of my re-made camera sling, a DIY copy of the Luma Loop.

How To: Ping Pong Ball Lights
october 2009 by rtopitt
In this instructable I'll show you a quick way to turn an ordinary string of Christmas lights into a great party decoration. At some point last semester I realized that ping pong balls make great diffusers and look really cool when they are glowing. Next we concluded that a hundred glowing ping pong balls would look even cooler. It was at about this point I decided that my apartment was in dire need of some ping pong ball lights.

september 2009 by rtopitt
The Holga camera is the current incarnation of a line of cheap toys that began years ago with a similarly made camera called the Diana. It costs about $15 and though it looks like a cheap 35mm camera, it takes medium-format (120mm) film. What is amazing about this camera is that it takes pictures at all. What is even more amazing is that, given the right conditions, it can produce pictures that are simply wonderful.

Petabytes on a budget: How to build cheap cloud storage | Backblaze Blog
september 2009 by rtopitt
At Backblaze, we provide unlimited storage to our customers for only $5 per month, so we had to figure out how to store hundreds of petabytes of customer data in a reliable, scalable way—and keep our costs low. After looking at several overpriced commercial solutions, we decided to build our own custom Backblaze Storage Pods: 67 terabyte 4U servers for $7,867.
