Tasjian Experience Design :: user interface and user experience design

"At it’s most basic, wabi-sabi is an aesthetic appreciation of the incomplete, simple, rustic and modest. Sound a lot like Google’s interface? Leonard Koren characterizes the differences between Western middle modernism and wabi-sabi, which he views as polar opposites. (Koren, 1994) Modernism Wabi-Sabi Logical, rational world view Intuitive world view Absolute Relative Geometric organization of form Organic form People adapting to machines People adapting to nature Mass-produced, modular Variable, one-of-a-kind Solicits reduction of sensory experience Solicits expansion of sensory experience These rather abstract characterizations of wabi-sabi relate to a number of concepts. Aen Tan identifies a few of these which have a direct bearing on interactive design (Tan, 2007); "

"I think I've made my point. We all know, people have learned to scroll. They did a long time ago, but still the 'everything needs to be above the fold' concept lingers on.
Many web designers, after presenting a site design, hear the client worriedly ask 'But, where is the fold?!' Your first response is usually to switch on the guides in Photoshop to show and they then nervously say 'Hmm, yeah, we're going to need those articles, and those links, and those 6 images all above the fold.'
And there goes any sense of white space, readability and story telling you had planned for their site. •"

The $5 Guerrilla User Test « Bumblebee Labs Blog
february 2010 by rtlechow
Here’s the 5 second version:
1. Bring a laptop to a bar
2. Offer to buy someone a beer in exchange for participating in a user study
3. Watch your application crash & burn as people do all sorts of ridiculous ass shit they would never do in a lab but constantly do in real life
4. Go back, apply the lessons you have learnt, repeat until you have an app that is 100% drunk person proof

fluidIA
february 2010 by rtlechow
"fluidIA is an emerging agile design tool for prototyping rich user interfaces. The big idea behind this experiment is whether we as interaction designers, IA's, UX professionals and developers can create our own prototyping tool in an open way. Provided with access to an open design and open source process, this project kicks off with the following vision:"
