Metastability in electronics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Serious computer and digital hardware bugs caused by metastability have a fascinating social history. Many engineers have refused to believe that a bistable device can enter into a state that is neither true nor false and has a positive probability that it will remain indefinite for any given period of time, albeit with exponentially decreasing probability over time. However, metastability is an inevitable result of any attempt to map a continuous domain to a discrete one. There will always be points in the continuous domain which are equidistant (or nearly so) from the points of the discrete domain, making a decision as to which discrete point to select a difficult and potentially lengthy process.[6] If the inputs to an arbiter or flip-flop arrive almost simultaneously, the circuit most likely will traverse a point of metastability. Metastability remains poorly understood in some circles, and various engineers have proposed their own circuits…"

detailed explanation of a recent privilege escalation bug in linux (CVE-2010-3301) at time to bleed by Joe Damato
This article is going to explain how a recent privilege escalation exploit for the Linux kernel works. I’ll explain what the deal is from the kernel side and the exploit side.

This article is long and technical; prepare yourself.

RFC 3092 (rfc3092) - Etymology of "Foo"
"Approximately 212 RFCs, or about 7% of RFCs issued so far, starting
with [RFC269], contain the terms `foo', `bar', or `foobar' used as a
metasyntactic variable without any proper explanation or definition.
This may seem trivial, but a number of newcomers, especially if
English is not their native language, have had problems in
understanding the origin of those terms. This document rectifies
that deficiency.

Gravity train - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"All straight-line gravity trains on a given planet take exactly the same amount of time to complete a journey (that is, no matter where on the surface the two endpoints of its trajectory are located). For Earth, this time would equal 2530.30 seconds (nearly 42.2 minutes) if it were a perfect sphere. [2]"

ETAOIN SHRDLU - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ETAOIN SHRDLU is the approximate order of frequency of the twelve most commonly used letters in the English language, best known as a nonsense phrase that sometimes appeared in print in the days of "hot type" publishing due to a custom of Linotype machine operators.
