Daniel Tammet on Perception, Language, and Meaning | Krista Stevens
december 2011 by roel
Daniel Tammet‘s TED talk A Different Way of Knowing is a fascinating look at how humans perceive language and meaning.
Perceptions are at the heart of how we acquire knowledge. Esthetic judgements rather than abstract reasoning guide and shape the process by which we all come to know what we know.

Birds on the Wires on Vimeo
september 2009 by roel
Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating. I sent the music to the photographer, Paulo Pinto, who I Googled on the internet. He told his editor, who told a reporter and the story ended up as an interview in the very same newspaper. Here I've posted a short video made with the photo, the music and the score (composed by the birds).

Presentation Zen: Dan Pink: Rethinking the ideology of carrots and sticks
august 2009 by roel
We don't need sweeter carrots and sharper sticks, Dan says. We need a whole new approach, an approach that puts more stock in intrinsic motivation. Dan identifies three elements that comprise a new way of thinking about management: Autonomy: The urge to direct our own lives. Mastery: The desire to get better at something that matters. Purpose: The yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves. Dan_pink Traditional ideas about management are great, Dan says, "if you want compliance; but for engagement, self-direction works best."

A Peek Over My Shoulder - James Duncan Davidson - James Duncan Davidson
june 2009 by roel
My longtime friend Mike Clark from The Pragmatic Studio recently went to Hawaii on vacation and, of course, took his camera. During his trip, he captured a great photo of a green lizard. Yesterday, he sent me an email asking for any comments or criticism about his photo and what I might do to it in Lightroom. Instead of trying to communicate vaguely through email and a couple of static photos, I pulled out ScreenFlow (which I’ve been meaning to play with sometime) and kicked out a fast little screencast of me in Lightroom talking my way through processing his image.

n New York, we are very occupied with getting from one place to another. I wondered: could a human-like object traverse sidewalks and streets along with us, and in so doing, create a narrative about our relationship to space and our willingness to interact with what we find in it? More importantly, how could our actions be seen within a larger context of human connection that emerges from the complexity of the city itself? To answer these questions, I built robots.

Some of the (..) ideas are already familiar from the film Minority Report, whose characters performed forensic analysis using massive, gesturally driven displays. 1080p MKV playback on Mac OS X (VLC)
november 2008 by roel
If you’re like me, you used to think that your Intel Mac was a pretty powerful computer. With all of those super zippy cores and RAMs and caches and all that, everything does seem to go a lot faster on the newer machines. But then came all those 1080p MKV files, with their unbelievable (basically unwatchable) jerkiness, and you found yourself questioning the new religious order. Is the machine, perhaps, actually a piece of junk? Was it that hard disk upgrade you did? The new RAM you installed? Leopard? Some awful combination thereof? The good news is that it’s actually a software issue.

Canon’s much-ballyhooed but not universally welcomed 5D Mark II also (and this is a new thing for SLRs) operates as a high-def videocam. There are two videos linked from The Online Photographer and they are mind-bogglingly, jaw-droppingly beautiful. But it won’t work for you. The pictures you take with this camera will almost certainly look great with little effort, while your videos will require huge effort and probably still end up lousy.

Analog Meets Its Match in Red Digital Cinema's Ultrahigh-Res Camera
august 2008 by roel
It's more than that: His team of engineers and scientists have created the first digital movie camera that matches the detail and richness of analog film. The Red One records motion in a whopping 4,096 lines of horizontal resolution—"4K" in filmmaker lingo—and 2,304 of vertical. For comparison, hi-def digital movies like Sin City and the Star Wars prequels top out at 1,920 by 1,080, just like your HDTV.
