TipToe - Search, view, share the web
april 2011 by roel
Instead of using the built-in Google search of Safari, you can just search the web from Tip Toe, with a few advantages: the engine is based on Bing and Blekko, with a bit of artificial intelligence on top. It should remove all aggregated results of server farms, and the interface is free of ads. One more point: Tip Toe does NOT track your searches, and respects your privacy.

Exclusive: How Google’s Algorithm Rules the Web | Magazine
february 2010 by roel
You might think that after a solid decade of search-market dominance, Google could relax. After all, it holds a commanding 65 percent market share and is still the only company whose name is synonymous with the verb search. But just as Google isn’t ready to rest on its laurels, its competitors aren’t ready to concede defeat. For years, the Silicon Valley monolith has used its mysterious, seemingly omniscient algorithm to, as its mission statement puts it, “organize the world’s information.”

Open Library
july 2009 by roel
One web page for every book ever published. It's a lofty, but achievable, goal. To build it, we need hundreds of millions of book records, a brand new database infrastructure, a wiki interface, multi-language support, and people who are willing to contribute their time, effort, and book data. To date, we have gathered about 30 million records (20 million are available through the site now), and more are on the way. We have built the database infrastructure and the wiki interface, and you can search millions of book records, narrow results by facet, and search across the full text of 1 million scanned books. Open Library is a project of the non-profit Internet Archive, and is funded in part by a grant from the California State Library. We have a small team of fantastic programmers who have accomplished a lot, but we can't do it alone! This is an Open project - the software is open, the data is open, the documentation is open, and the site is open.

Google Admits "Data is the Intel Inside" - O'Reilly Radar
january 2009 by roel
That least-understood principle from my original Web 2.0 manifesto, "Data is the Intel Inside," is finally coming out of the closet. A post on the Google Operating System Blog entitled Google is Really About Large Amounts of Data notes that in an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit in October, Marissa Mayer, Google's VP of Search Products and User Experience, "confessed that having access to large amounts of data is in many instances more important than creating great algorithms."

Yahoo Will Delete Some Data After 3 Months
december 2008 by roel
In a nod toward privacy, Yahoo today said it would only keep personal data on searchers and portal users for 90 days (double that in cases of fraud or suspicious activity). This ups the ante for search firms Google, which halved its data retention time to nine months in September, and Microsoft, which has said it would drop its data retention times to six months if its competitors did.
