Books of The Times - Jaron Lanier’s ‘You Are Not a Gadget’ - Automatons of the Web - Review - NYTimes.com
january 2010 by roel
In 2006, the artist and computer scientist Jaron Lanier published an incisive, groundbreaking and highly controversial essay about “digital Maoism” — about the downside of online collectivism, and the enshrinement by Web 2.0 enthusiasts of the “wisdom of the crowd.” In that manifesto Mr. Lanier argued that design (or ratification) by committee often does not result in the best product, and that the new collectivist ethos — embodied by everything from Wikipedia to “American Idol” to Google searches — diminishes the importance and uniqueness of the individual voice, and that the “hive mind” can easily lead to mob rule.

Photofacts; Review: Wacom Bamboo Fun tekentablet
january 2009 by roel

Asus Eee PC 1000H review
december 2008 by roel
Asus may be pushing the Eee PC 1002HA as the new and improved Eee PC 1000H. The new model is thinner, lighter, and better looking than its predecessor. But after having spent a few months with an Asus Eee PC 1000H I can say there are some reasons you might want to choose it over the 1002HA.

File Under - Recensie - Ben Folds - Way To Normal
november 2008 by roel
Maar hoe verhoudt dit album zich tot het eerdere werk van Folds? Voorganger Songs For Silverman - uit 2005 alweer! - vond ik een hoogtepunt in Folds' oeuvre en daar komt 'ie met dit album eerlijk gezegd niet overheen. Dat wil echter niet zeggen dat Way To Normal een tegenvaller is. Integendeel. Met het eerder genoemde "You Don't Know Me" en het fraaie "Cologne" staan er geheide livekrakers op en het algehele niveau is onverminderd hoog.

ATPM 13.01 - Review: Audio Hijack Pro 2.7
november 2008 by roel
Audio Hijack Pro. It’s a piece of software designed to capture audio input and output from your computer, and route it into a file. This is one of those tasks that it does not necessarily occur to you to do—until you play back a video and realize you want to capture a piece of dialogue for a ringtone, for instance, or wish that you could listen to your favorite radio show on your iPod. Or, you want to record a podcast. It doesn’t really matter how it works, but essentially, it wiretaps the system audio stream, which can be split up by application or taken as a whole. Then, it can apply filters to it, and then convert the file (natively, an AIFF) to the format of your choice. Ta-da!

The Tao of Mac - Ten Days With Lightroom
october 2008 by roel
There are a million things people take for granted when talking about either Lightroom or iPhoto – for starters, that one is a professional tool and the other is a toy. But toys can become quite sophisticated, and professional tools tend to go mainstream as technology matures – plus photography is a field where that distinction is fast blurring, to a point.

CrunchGear » Review: True Enough by Farhad Manjoo
october 2008 by roel
It is precisely this level of scientific research that makes True Enough interesting. Manjoo doesn’t simply say that we live in a fractured society where people can choose their own reality. He provides extensive psychological research that proves why our brains function that way.

Kredietcrisis (II) | NRC Boeken
october 2008 by roel

Ben Casnocha: The Blog: Jon Chait on Naomi Klein
september 2008 by roel
It's always interesting to read a smart person's intelligent yet devastating take-down of an argument, partly because it's so difficult to do. The intellectual scene is littered with personal attacks, sweeping generalizations, or humorless nitpicking that leave even agreeable readers feeling sympathetic for the person on the other end. If you want an example of a professional, thoughtful, detailed, and nonetheless devastating critique of a thesis, read Jon Chait's review of Naomi Klein's bestselling book The Shock Doctrine in the New Republic.

Woot! Today I get to be among the very first to share with you the planet’s newest camera: the much-anticipated Nikon D90. You may have been attuned to all the recent leaks, buzz and rumors of a new Nikon camera coming soon, but I can assure you, this here ain’t no rumor. It’s the real deal and I know so because my crew and I spent several weeks testing and experimenting with this gem months in advance of today’s release, and our efforts make up the launch campaign.

The Kodak Zi6 is a handheld, flash-memory-based video camera. You press the power button, wait about a second for it to start up, then hit the record button. Hit the record button again and the video is saved. Just plug it into a USB port and drag the video files to the desktop.

Six Annoyances in Hardy Heron Ubuntu

I’m a huge fan of Ubuntu Linux. I’ve used many flavors of Linux over the years, and Ubuntu is my favorite by far. So it pains me to write this. For my needs, Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) is worse than 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). I cannot recommend Hardy Heron a
