Understanding Perspective and Focal Length
In photography, there’s a common misconception that focal length determines the perspective of an image, but the only thing that really determines perspective is where you put the camera.

For example, the telephoto lens is often said to “compress” your scene and make everything look flat. But, it’s not the focal length that’s doing this. It’s actually because you’re so far from the scene you’re photographing (which is how telephoto lenses are commonly used: to photograph something far away). And, it’s because of this great distance that the scene looks “flat” in the final image.

The Online Photographer: Edward Burtynsky's Oil
Edward Burtynsky has built a career in fine art photography meeting this challenge. He began photographing conventionally beautiful landscapes in large format. As he relates in the video Manufactured Landscapes, he had an epiphany while attempting to photograph in the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania. He realized that every bit of landscape within sight had been completely reshaped by coal mining. Nothing was "natural." The landscape as reshaped by man instead became his subject.

Oil is Burtynsky's latest book. The extraction, distribution, consumption, and declining availability of petroleum are all explored through his large-format photographs.

Sustaining The Practice of Art
Chase Jarvis recently posted about his Create-Share-Sustain paradigm. I’ve referenced it, linked to it, quoted it several times this past year. In that paradigm, the notion of sustaining the create-share cycle is generally seen as a financial one. It’s the grease on the wheels that allows you to keep going – whether that’s working at Starbucks or a day-job you love, or even making photographs as a career itself. But there are other means by which we sustain ourselves. Man, Jesus once said, does not live by bread alone. Of course, He was referring to prayer, a sustenance of the soul. Art too sustains the soul. But how do you sustain art?

Grijsverloop ND filter, landschapsfotografie geheim | DIGITALE•FOTOGRAFIETIPS

D3 or D300? Full-frame or DX - by Thom Hogan
Since Nikon's announcement, a persistent theme in my email InBox has been torturous grappling with which one to get. After all, they are both fast-shooting cameras with 100% viewfinders, the same new AF system, and 12mp sensors. Indeed, the differences are few: 1. FX or DX.

DNG Profiles:FAQ - Adobe Labs
What's the easiest way to apply a profile to a large number of images in Lightroom? First, select a set of images in your LR catalog. Next, choose your desired profile from the Profile popup menu in the Develop module's Camera Calibration panel. Then choose "Sync Settings..." from the Settings menu. Make sure "Calibration" is checked in the ensuing dialog box and click Synchronize. If you find yourself doing this a lot, you can save yourself time by making a preset. In the Develop module's left panel, click the + button to the right of the word "Presets". Make sure "Calibration" is checked in the ensuing dialog box and click Create. Then whenever you need to apply your preset to a group of images, click on your newly-created preset from the Presets list in the left panel.

Koet, (a book and slideshow), is a photographic essay on a pair of coots and their nest. For months I "fed" them with my own stuff (nude photo's, old toothbrushes, etc), which the coots incorporated in their nest. Besides a way of making an artwork that was beyond my control, Koet is about perishability.

review: LensAlign focus calibration system « planet neil – tangents
Now there are a few ways to address this small focusing error. You can either send your equipment in for calibration, but that means you are without your equipment for what is a small, yet seriously niggling problem. Or, you can adjust the camera yourself if you are fortunate enough to own one of the more recent models of D-SLRs that boast a feature where you can micro-adjust the auto-focus. The Canon 50D, 5D mk2, 1D mk3, 1Ds mk3; or Nikon D300, D700, D3, D3x; and even the most recent Sony A900, and Pentax K20 have this feature. You can either create a make-shift device, or you can take a convenient shortcut like I did, and get the LensAlign Pro kit, which allows you to do the AF micro-adjustment on your camera with confidence.

AE/AF-Lock mysteries solved with AF-S and AF-C: Nikon D90 - D40 / D5000 Forum: Digital Photography Review
In a separate thread, there was a bunch of discussion of various focus and exposure modes on the D70. I was pretty confused about what the various options do and which I should use for the different types of shooting so I waded through the manual, through Thom's ebook and played with a bunch of settings on my camera to settle on two combinations I actually want to use for different types of shooting. These two combinations give me a great default behavior for a half press of the shutter and give me easy overrides using the AE-L/AF-L button. If you ever want to focus and meter on different parts of the frame or want to track a moving subject with AF-C focus, but not lock exposure at the half press, then you should definitely read this.

Building Rome in a Day
Entering the search term Rome on Flickr returns more than two million photographs. This collection represents an increasingly complete photographic record of the city, capturing every popular site, facade, interior, fountain, sculpture, painting, cafe, and so forth. It also offers us an unprecedented opportunity to richly capture, explore and study the three dimensional shape of the city. In this project, we consider the problem of reconstructing entire cities from images harvested from the web.

A Peek Over My Shoulder - James Duncan Davidson - James Duncan Davidson
My longtime friend Mike Clark from The Pragmatic Studio recently went to Hawaii on vacation and, of course, took his camera. During his trip, he captured a great photo of a green lizard. Yesterday, he sent me an email asking for any comments or criticism about his photo and what I might do to it in Lightroom. Instead of trying to communicate vaguely through email and a couple of static photos, I pulled out ScreenFlow (which I’ve been meaning to play with sometime) and kicked out a fast little screencast of me in Lightroom talking my way through processing his image.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer | Lightroom Presets
I designed this workflow to be a little more intuitive and versatile than one-size-fits-all preset approach. Since I occasionally shoot in different file formats, I needed presets that could adapt to both a RAW and JPG workflow. The workflow itself is a two-step process 1) Correcting and enhancing the quality and tonality of the images, and 2) making color adjustments. The two categories of presets I developed (Basic Presets and Color Presets) can be mixed and matched in a number of ways, and since the settings of each type of preset are exclusive to their function, you'll never have to worry about Basic Presets or Color Presets overriding each other. Basic Presets only affect White Balance, Exposure, Recovery, Fill Light, Blacks, Brightness, Contrast, Tone Curve, and Vignette settings. And Color Presets only affect Hue, Saturation, Luminance, Grayscale Mix, and Split Tone settings.

My Photography Workflow 2009 | Thomas Hawk Digital Connection
Last year I wrote a blog post detailing my photography workflow. Since last year though my workflow has changed a bit as I’ve migrated from Adobe’s Bridge software to Adobe’s Lightroom software and thought that I’d post an updated article detailing how I process my images from start to finish. Questions about my workflow are some of the most common questions I’m regularly asked.

Black and White Conversion: The Best Ways to Turn Color Digital Photos Into Beautiful B&W
There are a couple of simple ways to get black-and-white digital photos. 1. Use your camera’s built-in B&W setting. 2. Convert to B&W using the pre-set filters in iPhoto/Picasa/Photoshop Elements. 3. Use Photoshop (or GIMP or whatever) to desaturate or change to grayscale. These methods all work, but you end up with flat, muddy photos. Bumping up the contrast will improve matters, but to get a black-and-white picture that really pops, you’ll have to go a little deeper.

Hi all, you probably wondered where I’ve been hiding - some of you know about me moving and trying to build a new home (repairing that is) and it’s taken more energy than I hoped for. Now - one bright light lately have been the Dp2. I will be making this very short and let pictures speak loud - as the camera that I used isn’t the final production unit.

I just got an SB-600 and I'm confused by something. The diagram in the manual indicates that it has a "light sensor window". This would seem (to me) to imply that you can trigger the flash as a "slave" by having another flash go off first. Am I missing something?

2.26 Mooiere flits belichting | DIGITALE•FOTOGRAFIETIPS

10 Principles of Beautiful Photography
A camera does not work like an eye; memory does not work like film. There is a fine line between a photo that is quite nice and one that is quite breathtaking. At some undefined point, a photo can cross the Rubicon and be forever a piece of beautiful art. That hinterland between a regular photo and evocative art is a moving target from person to person and taste to taste. However, that zone of wonderment can be narrowed a bit once you start to consider about the way the brain stores memories and emotions.
