F.lux: software to make your life better
june 2011 by roel
During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.
F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.
It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.

Saturday Shout: The Best Monitors for Digital Photography - PhotographyBLOG
october 2008 by roel
In an increasingly digital world, we often spend most of our day looking at them: monitors. Whilst a budget monitor is fine for office applications, digital photography demands a much higher specification. CRT monitors have always been the preferred choice of most graphic artists and photographers, but slimmer and lighter LCD panels now dominate the market, so much so that it can be impossible to find a high-quality CRT display. So which technology do you prefer and why? What are the most important characteristics of a monitor to consider? Which particular monitor would you recommend for photography? Shout out now..

october 2008 by roel
OK, I was very enthusiastic in my last entry to see my Spyder calibration device supported in ArgyllCMS. So much that I didn’t read any documentation and just typed the first command that I came across and behold, my Spyder started measuring patches. Great! However, typing the first command I came across didn’t quite produce a working icc profile.

Linux color management - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
september 2008 by roel
Linux color management has the same goal as the color management systems (CMS) for other operating systems: to achieve the best possible color reproduction throughout an imaging workflow from its source (camera, video, scanner…), onto imaging software (CinePaint, Digikam, GIMP, Krita, Scribus ...) and finally its output (monitor, video projector, printer...). In particular, color management attempts to support WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You GET)) on-screen previewing (soft-proofing) ability for color work such as retouching prior to printing.

Today I finally got a Spyder2 Express monitor calibration kit, and calibrated my ThinkPad's laptop. I've known it to be shockingly badly calibrated (although it is an improvement over the X20), but was curious as to how much it can be corrected.
