Shoebox
october 2011 by roel
Shoebox, the iPhone App, makes it easy to scan old paper photos and share them with family and friends. It helps you bring albums, scrapbooks, and photo-filled “shoeboxes” out of the closet and into an online, shareable space where they can be organized and shared with family and friends. Shoebox’s edge detection and perspective correction make sure that the paper photographs you scan turn out beautifully. After scanning, you can quickly crop, straighten, rotate your photo, as well as record the stories behind the photographs by adding captions, dates, and tags. The quality of camera phones has increased so much that your handy iPhone is now as good as the clunky piece of hardware you have next to your computer, and with none of the wires or drivers. The new iPhone 4S offers a 8 megapixel camera that takes images at 2448×3264 resolution. Using Shoebox to scan a typical 4″x6″ photo produces a DPI of 550 – the same high quality recommended by scanning experts like ScanCafe.

TipToe - Search, view, share the web
april 2011 by roel
Instead of using the built-in Google search of Safari, you can just search the web from Tip Toe, with a few advantages: the engine is based on Bing and Blekko, with a bit of artificial intelligence on top. It should remove all aggregated results of server farms, and the interface is free of ads. One more point: Tip Toe does NOT track your searches, and respects your privacy.

Nederlands Architectuurinstituut - 3D Architectuurapplicatie
march 2011 by roel

How I Learned To Quit The iPhone And Love Google Voice
august 2009 by roel
At the end of July I declared my intention to quit the iPhone and AT&T, port my mobile phone number to Google Voice and use any mobile device that I pleased (or lots of them at once) in the future. Like others, I will no longer blindly follow all things Apple. Today I’m pleased to report a status update on those efforts: complete. I am no longer a member of the Cult of iPhone.

iPhone Jailbreaking Could Crash Cellphone Towers, Apple Claims | Threat Level | Wired.com
july 2009 by roel
Threat Level had no idea the iPhone was so dangerous. We’re gratified that Apple locked down this potential weapon of mass disruption before hackers could unleash cybarmageddon. This also explains why Apple rejected the official Google Voice App for the iPhone this week. We thought it was because Google Voice posed a threat to AT&T’s exclusivity deal with Apple. Now we know it threatened national security.

Did the smartphone arrive just as we were ready to stop thinking?
april 2009 by roel
"People worry about Google making us dumber, or at the very least changing the way in which we think. But it strikes me that the smartphone, with its constant ability to immerse us in the flow of the Metaverse (albeit in a limited way, today) is likely to play a much bigger role in how our neocortex changes the way in which we think, from the basic "processing" we do about the mundane details of our day to the very way in which insight happens."
