Adobe Lightroom - Customising Camera Defaults
december 2009 by roel
As noted above both Lightroom and Camera Raw include support for the saving and application of user defined develop settings on a camera model, serial number and/or ISO rating basis. These settings will be applied automatically to each photo during import or after a reset if it is already within the catalog. By adopting this approach Lightroom provides a means by which much of the decision making and application of custom or user defined defaults for develop settings is fully automated. Better still is the fact that the defaults saved in Lightroom will automatically be used by Camera Raw and vice versa.

A Peek Over My Shoulder - James Duncan Davidson - James Duncan Davidson
june 2009 by roel
My longtime friend Mike Clark from The Pragmatic Studio recently went to Hawaii on vacation and, of course, took his camera. During his trip, he captured a great photo of a green lizard. Yesterday, he sent me an email asking for any comments or criticism about his photo and what I might do to it in Lightroom. Instead of trying to communicate vaguely through email and a couple of static photos, I pulled out ScreenFlow (which I’ve been meaning to play with sometime) and kicked out a fast little screencast of me in Lightroom talking my way through processing his image.

Black and White Conversion: The Best Ways to Turn Color Digital Photos Into Beautiful B&W
may 2009 by roel
There are a couple of simple ways to get black-and-white digital photos. 1. Use your camera’s built-in B&W setting. 2. Convert to B&W using the pre-set filters in iPhoto/Picasa/Photoshop Elements. 3. Use Photoshop (or GIMP or whatever) to desaturate or change to grayscale. These methods all work, but you end up with flat, muddy photos. Bumping up the contrast will improve matters, but to get a black-and-white picture that really pops, you’ll have to go a little deeper.

Photofacts; Review: Wacom Bamboo Fun tekentablet
january 2009 by roel

december 2008 by roel

Color Management in a Nutshell « Linux Photography
october 2008 by roel
The idea behind Color Management (CM) is to define colors in a device-independent way, that is: what you have on your screen would look (as much as possible) the same on someone else’s screen or printed on your printer. Think about the problem this way: the “most green” color on your screen can be quite different from the “most green” color on your printer, so how do we cope?

Use ColorVision Spyder to produce an ICC monitor profile under ArgyllCMS / Linux « Linux Photography
october 2008 by roel
OK, I was very enthusiastic in my last entry to see my Spyder calibration device supported in ArgyllCMS. So much that I didn’t read any documentation and just typed the first command that I came across and behold, my Spyder started measuring patches. Great! However, typing the first command I came across didn’t quite produce a working icc profile.

Photofacts; De eerste stapjes met Lightroom
october 2008 by roel

Photography as a Weapon - Errol Morris - Zoom - New York Times Blog
august 2008 by roel
Photoshopping can alter our media reality. However: "change the caption and you change the meaning of the photographs. You don’t need Photoshop. That’s the disturbing part. Captions do the heavy lifting as far as deception is concerned. The pictures merely provide the window-dressing. The unending series of errors engendered by falsely captioned photographs are rarely remarked on."
