You Deleted Your Cookies? Think Again | Epicenter | Wired.com
august 2009 by roel
More than half of the internet’s top websites use a little known capability of Adobe’s Flash plugin to track users and store information about them, but only four of them mention the so-called Flash Cookies in their privacy policies, UC Berkeley researchers reported Monday. Unlike traditional browser cookies, Flash cookies are relatively unknown to web users, and they are not controlled through the cookie privacy controls in a browser. That means even if a user thinks they have cleared their computer of tracking objects, they most likely have not. What’s even sneakier? Several services even use the surreptitious data storage to reinstate traditional cookies that a user deleted, which is called ‘re-spawning’ in homage to video games where zombies come back to life even after being “killed,”

Linux Chrome now with Flash & extensions « ☠ I could not think of a blog title ☠
july 2009 by roel
The Linux version of Chrome has been coming along fairly quickly, the latest build of Chrome for Linux now works with Flash and has extension support. It is also possible to configure the options (although there are still some TODO stubs so setting a proxy isn’t possible). Tested under Ubuntu 9.04 64bit.

Choosy - A smarter default browser for Mac OS X
june 2009 by roel
Forget the default browser, Choosy opens links in the right browser. When you click on a link Choosy will do the right thing, whether that's something simple (like using whatever browser is already running) or something complex (like prompting you to pick a browser, but only when you hold down the shift key and click on a link to google.com).

Ambient News at Toolness
january 2009 by roel
So, in an attempt to solve this problem and explore the possibility of ambient information in the browser, I’ve started a little experiment. It’s a Firefox Extension called “Ambient News”, and its goal is to provide the user with zero-cost news about the sites that they visit frequently. The extension requires no configuration; you just install it and see if it helps you out.

Flash en Safari falen privacytest - Security.NL
january 2009 by roel

Michael Tsai - Blog - Inside Safari 3.2’s Anti-phishing Features
november 2008 by roel
The Apple Customer Privacy Policy says nothing about Safari sending any information to places other than the Web sites you’re visiting—but as of Safari 3.2, it does exactly that…If the URL of a page you want to visit matches the hash prefix of a known malicious page, Safari 3.2 appears to send that prefix to Google and ask for the entire 256-byte hash to make sure that this really is a malicious page (and also to verify that the page hasn’t been removed from Google’s lists since Safari’s last list update).

Optimize Firefox’s memory usage by tweaking session preferences | redemption in a blog
october 2008 by roel
I’m a heavy tabbed browsing user - I have around 30 tabs open in my day-to-day Firefox profile all the time. Since the day Firefox 3 was released, I’ve noticed Firefox progressively getting slower with this particular Firefox profile (I use a different profile for web development). When it got to the point where changing tabs took a noticeable pause of 1-2 seconds, I tweaked some of Firefox’s session store and history preferences and now things are blazing fast again.

Chrome incorporates many of the sandboxing techniques developed by GreenBorder to protect its users. It is no longer possible for the modules that parse HTML and run Javascript to compromise the entire system. Google Chrome’s design is also reminiscent of the OP Browser (available here), which locks down browser components to prevent system-wide exploitation.
