Valentine's Day 2012 Cards - a set on Flickr

Rhizome | The Never Forgotten House
december 2011 by robertogreco
"I rarely hear anyone boast about photographic memory anymore. It's less impressive today as we can all supplement our own brains with an algorithmic search and the internet's seemingly infinite archival capacity. But this is still a period of transition…"
"We could accumulate hundreds of thousands of images throughout our lives but they will never taste like anything. An image represents and verifies a memory but the rest is left to imagination. Every essential moment of a child's life is documented if he was born in the West. With digital album after album for every birthday, every Christmas, he will never struggle to remember what his childhood home looked like. That reaching, that vague warm feeling for a place one remembers but cannot see; that is a sense now growing extinct.
A child today grows up in a never forgotten house."

Rob Walker: The work of art in the age of Googled reproduction: Observers Room: Design Observer
july 2011 by robertogreco
"One question that might arise is: Who would be the owner, the artist, the author of these Pergoogles (or whatever they are)? They encompass original works, remix spinoffs, spoofs, maybe even unrelated keyword-driven imagery. Is it an involuntary collaboration among all of the above? Or is Google the artist, creating bricolage with its algorithm?<br />
<br />
I'm going to say the author of the images that you are looking is me…<br />
<br />
To me the most interesting thing about nailing down permanent-ish versions of these image clusters is that…they are actually quite ephemeral. Your own Google Image Search results for these same terms could be different, according to your search history. Mine could be different in a week…<br />
<br />
On some level, that may suggest an image crisis; but at the same time, it's an image opportunity. The underyling source material may be quite durable, yet these composites are anything but. All the more reason to take a few seconds and capture them…"

Unsmiling Indians : Denver Museum of Nature & Science [See also "Smiling Indians": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga98brEf1AU ]
july 2011 by robertogreco
"In an interview with the filmmaker, Ryan Red Corn, he talks about the lingering stereotyping of Native Americans in American contemporary culture. Think about the Washington Redskins, or even the military's use of the code name "Geronimo" for Osama bin Laden. Red Corn claims that even a cursory search on Google would prove his case.<br />
<br />
This passing comment led to Culture Lab's little experiment. A Google image search for different terms of American ethnicity-African American, Asian American, White American, Hispanic, and Native American-proved Red Corn's statement with astonishing precision.<br />
The image search results showed that only after some 200 photos can you find a Native Americans represented by a single contemporary, living person. The first eight pages of images are filled with feathered traditionalists, new age fantasies, and old black and white photos of stoic (that is, unsmiling) Indians."

Oh is THAT right. - So why MLKSHK?
june 2011 by robertogreco
"There’s been chatter recently about the decline of Flickr as a social site, but I believe it has less to do with the design of /photos/friends and more to do with 1) how Flickr encourages uploading large sets of images; and 2) how Flickr has fostered a photography nerd culture. With the latter comes extra emphasis on the aesthetics of an image and the technology used to capture it. <br />
<br />
The pressure to compete over lenses and shutter speeds is missing from MLKSHK, as is some of the personal investment of ego that comes with sole authorship. Where a single post to Flickr says “look at this photo that I took”, a post to MLKSHK says “Hey, look at THIS thing.”5<br />
<br />
And there is a solid amount of social functionality built in to support community growth: likes, saves (i.e. reblogs), mentions, comments, and comment conversations."

Test card - Wikipedia
june 2011 by robertogreco
"A test card, also known as a test pattern in North America, is a television test signal, typically broadcast at times when the transmitter is active but no program is being broadcast (often at startup and closedown). Used since the earliest TV broadcasts, test cards were originally physical cards at which a television camera was pointed, and such cards are still often used for calibration, alignment, and matching of cameras and camcorders. Test patterns used for calibrating or troubleshooting the downstream signal path are these days generated by test signal generators, which do not depend on the correct configuration (and presence) of a camera. Digitally generated cards allow vendors, viewers and television stations to adjust their equipment for optimal functionality."

Five Card Flickr
april 2011 by robertogreco
"This quasi experimental web site is designed to foster visual thinking. It is based completely, or more loosely... copied, from the Five Card Nancy game devised by comics guru Scott McCloud & the nifty web version at 741.5 Comics.<br />
However, rather than drawing from a hand of randomly chosen panels of the old Nancy comic, my version draws upon collections of photos specified by a tag in flickr. You are dealt five random photos for each draw, and your task is to select one each time to add to a selection of images, that taken together as a final set of 5 images- tell a story in pictures.<br />
When you are done, you the option to add a title and explanation, then you can save the story so you can put a link in your resume or send to your Mom…Plus we offer the ability to tweet your story or use an embed code to add it to your own web site.<br />
What do they look like? What a fantastic question you ask!<br />
We have a growing collection of mixed bag stories…"

Superfamous - Folkert Gorter
february 2011 by robertogreco
"Disclaimer: As you read this, you do not really see the pixels, the screen, your hands, and the surroundings, but an internal and three-dimensional image that reproduces them almost exactly and that is constructed by your brain. The photons emitted by your screen strike the retina of your eyes, which transform them into electrochemical information; the optic nerves relay this information to the visual cortex at the back of the head, where a cascade-like network of nerve cells separates the input into categories (form, color, movement, depth, etc.).<br />
<br />
How the brain goes about reuniting these sets of categorized information into a coherent image is still a mystery. This also means that the neurological basis of consciousness is unknown. (source = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cosmic_Serpent )"

Nagasaki Archive (En)
august 2010 by robertogreco
"In a situation like this, we started to consider if there is something new that we can engage, here from Nagasaki, the very place where the A-bomb struck. With all the abundant valuable resources in Nagasaki, a new approach to take advantage of them lead to this project. This project enables to access all of those resources from all over the world, which was formerly unable to do so. Moreover, by mapping the information with topographic data, the user can enhance the experience of what it was like when the A-bomb struck Nagasaki, in detail. "Nagasaki Archive" is an attempt to reorganize all of those information on a digital virtual globe (google earth). In order to make Nagasaki the last place on earth where the A-bomb struck, we hope that many people to interact with and learn from "Nagasaki Archive"." McSweeney's Internet Tendency: A Convergence of Convergences: A Contest.
february 2010 by robertogreco
"To celebrate the release of Lawrence Weschler's Everything That Rises: A Book of Convergences, we are launching an extravagant new contest: A Convergence of Convergences. Submit your own convergence −an unlikely, striking pair of images, along with a paragraph or three exploring the deeper resonances. The best contributions will be posted on the site, along with responding commentary from Weschler. (For those of you who still aren't quite clear on this "convergence" concept, it's kind of like Celebrity Look-Alikes, except instead of Nick Nolte and Gary Busey, it's a cuneiform tablet and the Chicago city jail, followed by a series of brilliant, spiraling ruminations. Or, for a more intelligent analysis, read this sneak preview of the book, written by a genuine graduate student.) Please send your submissions to everything@mcsweeneys.net − if your images are attachments (rather than links), please keep them under 1 megabyte."

MacroHistory : World History
august 2008 by robertogreco
"I describe humanity from its beginning to the 21st century - a gigantic subject that requires help from people who have done good works. I've drawn from those who have devoted their professional lives to a deeper and more narrow focus of study. The purpose is to address any query concerning a major development that could at some point have been answered by time, as in "time will tell." In other words the purpose is to illuminate historical trends, to describe the works of monarchs, tyrants and priests, the promises of prophets and politicians and the expectations of revolutionaries and military strategists. The best I can offer in my narratives is bits and pieces in a sketched order - in place of that which encyclopedias offer in fragmentation."

Lit Terms In Modern Media: Thoughts On Teaching
august 2008 by robertogreco
"I’ve been thinking about this page for quite a while, but I really only had two or three terms to post with links. Once I sat down to write this, though, I found a few others. This list provides examples of literary terms, primarily in videos and images, though there are a few written texts here for now. Page updates will happen. Hopefully this helps define, work with, teach, and learn these terms."
