XOXO Festival by Andy Baio — Kickstarter
8 days ago by robertogreco
"Hey Kickstarter! We're organizing XOXO, an arts and technology festival in Portland, Oregon this September 13-16th.
XOXO is a celebration of disruptive creativity. We want to take all the independent artists using the Internet to make a living doing what they love — the makers, craftspeople, musicians, filmmakers, comic book artists, game designers, hardware hackers — and bring them together with the technologists building the platforms that make it possible. If you have an audience and a good idea, nothing’s standing in your way.
XOXO is in three parts:
Conference (Saturday – Sunday). Talks from artists and creative technologists around the country that are breaking new ground.
Market (Saturday – Sunday). A large marketplace with a tightly-curated list of the best of Portland's arts and tech scenes, sharing and selling their work, with food supplied by the best of our thriving food cart scene…"

(Post)Material - Q&A
17 days ago by robertogreco
"(Post)Material is a three-day event that proposes questions and answers for contemporary design practice operating across the wildly varying dynamics of atoms, bits and ideas. Curated by Q&A;, a joint effort between four Helsinki-based design and research studios, and facilitated by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, the event brings together an assemblage of practitioners and academics in a daily talk show at WantedDesign, The Tunnel (11th ave b/w 27th & 28th) on May 19–21, 2.30 pm–4.00 pm every day.
“We tend to talk of the ‘information age’ without realizing that the future is as much about energy and materials as it is about information,” postulated Manuel De Landa in 1994. From design’s perspective, could this historical point in time—a resource-hungry industrial epoch rapidly nearing its expiry date—be defined as the ‘(post)material’ age?"

Jane Jacobs Walk
8 weeks ago by robertogreco
"Jane Jacobs Walk is a program of the Center for the Living City, a nonprofit organization created by people who knew Jane Jacobs and were fortunate enough to call her a friend. As an organization we celebrate her life and legacy by helping people organize walks in their communities around the time of Jane’s birthday in early May…
We honor Jane Jacobs by helping people leave the isolation of their homes to come together to experience areas of their city outside of the automobile. Our mission is to help people walk, observe, and connect with their built environment. We make a difference because a Jane Jacobs Walk enables members of a community to discover and respond to the complexities of their city through personal and shared observation."

"Adam Sternbergh went on a tear with #bettereditor and #betterfreelancer tips today; you can find them all in his timeline and here too. It was these three that caught my eye. Together, they offer a crisp formulation that's applicable not just to magazine pitches but all kinds of writing—daily news, blog posts, tweets, you name it:
Maybe top #betterfreelancer tip: Know difference btw event, opinion, idea, and story. Those are listed in ascending order of likely appeal.
Event = "So and so has an album coming out." Opinion = "...and I love/hate it." (1/2) #betterfreelancer

february 2012 by robertogreco
"Eventually you could have local campuses becoming places where MITx students seek tutoring, network, & socialize—reclaiming some of the college experience they’d otherwise have lost.
Phil thought this sounded like college as a giant coffee shop. I agree. Every education would be ad hoc. It would be student-directed toward the job market she’s aiming for.
This trend toward…coffeeshopification…is changing more than just colleges:
Book Stores Will Shrink to Coffee Shops…
The Coffee Shop Will Displace Most Retail Shops…
Offices Become Coffee Shops…Again…
What Doesn’t Become a Coffee Shop?…
…houses of worship…
What will remain other than coffee shops? Upscale retail will remain…[for] experience…Restaurants remain. Grocery stores remain.
Brick and mortar retail stores will be converted to public spaces. Multi-use space will be in increasing demand as connectivity tools allow easy coordination of impromptu events…"

A bit about Dodo in English | Dodo ry
december 2011 by robertogreco
"Dodo is an environmental organisation for urban folk which relies on the power of knowledge and argument. Dodo is about talking and doing. It organises public events, discussion groups, projects and more. Dodo brings together people from different backgrounds to exchange expertise, experiences and ideas. We work out ideas and then we work on some of them to carry out experiments that might improve things.
Dodo has a flexible and open ethos which makes it easy for talk to lead to action. Many of its important projects started out as ideas or visions developed in small discussion groups. The offspring of Dodo include the wind power company Lumituuli Ltd, Manombo Rain Forest Conservation Project and Dodona Combo Discussion Forum Project."

Cultural Artifacts In an Impermanent Digital World | Daniel Millsap
november 2011 by robertogreco
"the conflicting definitions of value attributed to the content generated by and on digitally created user communities but hosted by economically interested corporations that give little or no thought to making a decision to close an online community once it is no longer economically profitable for them to keep it open…
"The forums [of World of Warcraft] are always full of nostalgic reminiscences of and yearning for the return of earlier days, when battlegrounds took days instead of minutes, and quests were puzzles to be figured out and not inconvenient way points on a quest-helper map.
Newer players are unable to comprehend what it is that those people are longing for… they have no way to, for how do you archive memories of participation in an online game which is always changing in its purpose and in its goals? The temptation for newer players is to tell those people to shut up and deal with it. To adapt or get the heck out."

Doors of Perception weblog: xskool: breathing the same air
august 2011 by robertogreco
"…We converged, instead, on the idea that "X" means: this place, this moment, these people. Breathing the same air. Only here, only now.
Our group also embraced the idea of no curriculum, no standardised process, no teachers, and no certificates…
1 An explanation: Xskool enables people to create unique events in which change-minded people participate, interact, and reflect.
2 Xskool is not for people who see themselves as leaders, role models, experts or 'change agents'. Xskoolers might well be leaders, role models etc - but that is not for them to decide…
5 At each xskool encounter, a host venue or location will present a task or a question for the visiting group to work on. At West Lexham our task was to build this path:
6 Each xskool group will also work on a question or questions of its own. This question will not be posed in advance; rather, it will emerge from a mindfully-orqanised process [such as Open Space or World Café] when the group first assembles at the location…"

Doors of Perception weblog: In Praise of the Feral: Update on Xskool
august 2011 by robertogreco
"Convention centres are expensive, filled with hard surfaces, and - unless you're in the convention business - somewhere else than the subjects discussed in them. Being separated from the thing itself, they tend to foster groupthink - and abstract groupthink at that.
A feral encounter, in contrast, is one that has changed from being domesticated, to untamed. It brings people into contact with the lived reality of a situation. It is guided by its context - not by an agenda, and not by a curriculum.
In preparing for the challenges ahead we need more of the latter kinds of encounter.
This is the main conclusion so far from the xskool story…
The xskool opportunity is real, and pressing. Every design school in the world could use its support. All that's missing is a framework and resources to make it happen as a distributed service."

In fact we simply do not know. While in the last years, the global city became primary site of economic consumption & cultural display, local neighborhoods in margins of such centers of economic power remained sites of cultural production…peripheral communities & neighborhoods where new economies are emerging & new social, cultural & environmental configurations are taking place as catalysts to produce alternative urban policies towards a more inclusive social sustainability…<br />
<br />
…continues to engage pressing regional socio-economic, urban & environmental conditions across San Diego-Tijuana border. These meetings have been focusing on a critical analysis of local conflicts in order to re-evaluate meaning of shifting global dynamics, across geo-political boundaries, natural resources & marginal communities…will focus on Neighborhood as a Site of Production, investigating practices in arts, architecture, science & humanities that work w/ peripheral neighborhoods worldwide…"

"an exhibition and event series held in the home of Pamela Fraser and Randall Szott. They will take turns presenting what amounts to an ongoing conversation about art and culture - Ms. Fraser presenting art and artists, and Mr. Szott sharing the activities of people who work in other contexts. Together they hope to offer up a fun and thoughtful take on current ideas in art and life."<br />
<br />
Randall: "he said she said is not an exhibition space. It’s two people sharing things they like with the public. It’s a conversation, not an argument–isn’t that what couples always say when people catch their disagreements?"<br />
<br />
Pamela: "he said-she said is an exhibition space in the home of organizers Pamela Fraser and Randall Szott. In the tradition of the apartment-gallery, shows are held in a domestic setting, in this case, relatively unaltered. Exhibitions will fluctuate between he said and she said, and will function as arguments for their respective interests and positions."

FT.com / Arts / Film & Television - Joking apart
april 2011 by robertogreco
"…few years ago, I received an unsolicited e-mail asking me if I was interested in “submitting content”…Eventually it transpired that content-seeker wanted to know if I had any jokes that could be sold to be viewed on mobile phones…my material is written to be performed as part of a whole in particular sorts of places, & I have given a great deal of thought to how the acceptability and impact of ideas is affected by pacing, context and their position as part of a whole…didn’t want it being chopped up, miniaturised, de-contextualised…
"Next month I am curating a weekend of comedy and music at the Southbank Centre, London. I am a curator. What a dead word. It sounds like someone stirring turds in a toilet bowl with a stick. If something is being curated it already seems fixed and decayed – bands recreating their classic albums in their entirety, seasons of film screenings working towards a pre-ordained conclusion. To that end, I’ve tried to schedule events that are unrepeatable."

Mobility Shifts
april 2011 by robertogreco
"MobilityShifts examines learning with digital media from a global perspective. It will foster diverse discussions about digital fluencies for a mobile world and investigate learning outside the bounds of schools and universities. The summit, comprised of a conference, exhibition, podcast series, workshops and project demos and a theater performance, will add a rich international layer to the existing research about digital learning. Building on disciplinary mobility, the summit will showcase theories, people and projects making connections between self-learning, mobile platforms, and the web.<br />

Re-Inscribing the City: Unitary Urbanism Today
april 2011 by robertogreco
"In the late 50s up until about the end of the 60s a group of rebels and artists known as the Lettrist/Situationist International (LI/SI) made a desperate attempt to re-imagine the city so that its inhabitants could break free from the bleak urban routine of work and consumption. During this period numerous strategies were developed under the name of "Unitary Urbanism." This panel reflects on the historical importance of these strategies in order to critically examine how they relate to their own work, and the possible uses and subversive potential of these practices today."

Tweeters: I want a witness tag « BuzzMachine
march 2011 by robertogreco
"A proposal:<br />
<br />
It would be terribly useful if there were a separate convention for tweets from witnesses to major events so their reports can be separated from the discussion that follows. How about !jpquake for witnesses vs. #jpquake for discussion?<br />
<br />
Moments after the tragic earthquake hit Japan, folks are reporting on TV, people turned immediately to Twitter to tell friends and family and perhaps the world what was happening to them and to use it to get information and services.<br />
<br />
But, of course, in only moments, people around the world talking about the event and the hashtag gets overrun with folks who are talking *about* the event than *from* it. That’s all good and wonderful as well. But I want a way to separate the two."

"From new museums to project spaces and pop-up music events, nothing stands still in one of the largest cities in the Americas "
"Mexico City doesn’t feel alive so much as impossibly animated, scary in a way that you want to interact with rather than shy away from. D.F. is as much its bricks and mortar infrastructure and fantastically variegated architecture as the myriad ways people have of negotiating it. A hole-in-the-wall becomes a bar becomes an experimental music store, for a few hours once a month, or a penthouse gets repurposed as an ephemeral gallery."

Future Perfect » The 3 Audiences
november 2010 by robertogreco
"There are 3 audiences to every presentation: the people in the room; the people tuning in online in real or close to real time; and history. The presenter needs to consider all three.
‘History’ is increasingly the digital memory of event – it starts with the conversations leading up to, during and after the event – it’s the photos posted online, the retweeted quotes, the barbs, the likes, the references, the downloads. The presenter can’t control history but she can nudge it in the right direction.
For any given presentation what artifacts do you leave behind? Where are they linked from? How can they be repurposed, reused? And what is the thread that links them back to you and what you’ve done?
Who is the gatekeeper of your history?
What is their motivation both now and in the future?"

Internet as Playground and Factory :: Intro [viaos at: http://vimeo.com/ipf2009]
august 2010 by robertogreco
"The revenues of today's social aggregators are promising but their speculative value exceeds billions of dollars. Capital manages to expropriate value from the commons; labor goes beyond the factory, all of society is put to work. Every aspect of life drives the digital economy: sexual desire, boredom, friendship —& all becomes fodder for speculative profit. We are living in a total labor society and the way in which we are commoditized, racialized, & engendered is profoundly and disturbingly normalized. The complex & troubling set of circumstances we now confront includes the collapse of the conventional opposition between waged & unwaged labor, and is characterized by multiple “tradeoffs” & “social costs”—such as government & corporate surveillance. While individual instances are certainly exploitative in the most overt sense, the shift in the overall paradigm moves us beyond the explanatory power of the Marxian interpretation of exploitation (which is of limited use here)."

The generative web event « Snarkmarket [Important post stiching together two other important posts on the future of media]
august 2010 by robertogreco
"One new kind of media that’s starting to function as a work is a blog. Not, in most cases, a blog post—but a blog. If NYTimes decides, “hey, we’re going to start & host a blog all about parenting” that blog becomes a Work. It produces ongoing cultural focus, & not just because it’s in NYT. Some posts get more attention than others, especially if they cross over into long-form venue, but writing that blog, sticking with it, being its author, creates focus, readership & long accumulation of content. & I’m sure Lisa Belkin (already wrote a book about parenting) will get another book out of it.
But the other new, emergent work, which might be more radical, is the generative web event. 48HrMag, One Week | One Tool, Robin’s novellas & maybe even New Liberal Arts (especially if we put together another edition) are all ancestral species of this new thing—children of TED, Phoot Camp, Long Now, Iron Chef, & parents of whatever’s going to come next."

Temple? School? Try Nightclub: The Soul of a New Museum | The New York Observer
august 2010 by robertogreco
"past year is culmination of decade-long effort to change museum's character, to turn it "interactive," place where people come to see, but also be seen; to not just look at art but participate in it. MoMA has made its mission to transform "into a social space from an treasure trove," according to the director…
But a resulting influx of people through the doors has lead influential art worlders like Robert Storr to lament rise of "Death Star Museums." These are places where "uninterrupted contemplation" is impossible. More people may be coming to contemp art museums, Mr. Storr wrote…, but "the mechanisms in play are horridly like those of a sci-fi monster that ingests people in great gulps."
"Museums of modern art are a kind of inherently unstable space," Mr. Lowry said. "If you're going to follow flow of contemp art, you have to constantly tweak & adjust. You can't lock it down & say this is what it should be for the next 10 years. Artists are moving much faster than that.""

The future of media? Bet on events « Snarkmarket
november 2009 by robertogreco
"I like the idea of the event as a fundamental unit of media, specifically because at its best, it can be generative. And the media it generates—that growing data shadow—is what builds the audience over time. But its urgency—its liveness, human vitality, and, frankly, its risk and unpredictability—is what makes it more than just another link in the stream.

"It's Friday night and you drove out to Hollywood, found your secret parking spot, got in line and after an hour of waiting, realized that there's no way you and your friends will be getting inside the club. The night is still young, so what do you do? Fear not, dear reader, L.A. Weekly is here to help. We're excited to announce the launch of the L.A. Weekly iPhone app, the first app built for an alternative weekly paper. L.A. Weekly has always been your go-to guide for where to go, where to eat, and what to do. Now you can get all of our hot tips, newest places, best restaurants on your iPhone. For free (we love that word). The app features over 200 concert and event listings that you can sort by date, nearby and neighborhood, plus over 1000 easy-to-search restaurant listings, including recommendations from our Pulitzer Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold."

Hidden Los Angeles
june 2009 by robertogreco
"After moving away from Los Angeles for four years, I’m looking at it with new eyes now. L.A. has its bad points – every place does – but it also has a lot more truly interesting history and dimension than most visitors and residents expect. Especially during a time in history where many people are struggling, I wanted to create a site that focuses on the positive and maybe makes a difference in the way Los Angeles is perceived by residents and visitors alike."

Portland's 11xDesign Home Tour - Dwell Blog - dwell.com
february 2009 by robertogreco
"It’s not every local homes tour that merits attention beyond a city’s borders. But the 11xDesign tour, scheduled for February 21, featuring some of Portland’s most inspired contemporary residential design, is not a traditional home tour. ... s the city has become infused with new talent, a small group of promising and accomplished designer-developers have banded together in a hybrid of traditional architectural or development practice. Small firms and sole practitioners here like Path Architecture, Atelier Waechter, and Building Arts Workshop still operate as individual businesses, and even compete for buyers. But they share research, marketing and design ideas; they’ve become a community."

august 2008 by robertogreco
"Freed from screens and boards, players of these games roam the streets hungry for fun. One game may see you fleeing over Pero's bridge with a Pac Man ghost on your tail, another has you playing snakes and ladders up and down the stairs and slopes of a multi story car park. igfest will give you licence to play and be playful and will be more fun than you can shake a Wiimote at..."
