Beyond Good Intentions – The Movie
"Humanitarian crises caused by civil wars or natural disasters, such as in Haiti, often trigger a wave of support from us, the public. But our support raises two difficult questions: first, do our generous donations actually have the desired effect – or any positive effect? and second, what kind of evidence is available to ensure that any debate about aid is well-informed, and that the people most affected are given a prominent voice?

The politics of aid were brought back into sharp focus with the recent publication in The Atlantic of The White Savior Industrial Complex by Teju Cole . In a trenchant piece, Cole wrote: “If we are going to interfere in the lives of others, a little due diligence is a minimum requirement.”

But how?

To answer that question, the film maker Alice Smeets has pitched the idea of a documentary called Beyond Good Intentions…"

Copenhagen Game Collective - Games, research, and other cool projects from Copenhagen and beyond
"Copenhagen Game Collective is a multi-gender, multi-national, non-profit game design collective based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The collective comprises a network of people and companies interested in independent game culture. Our members include creative individuals first of all, but also small companies, non-commercial interest groups, and game communicators and disseminators.

We play, exhibit, create, and care about games of all types – digital or otherwise – with a slant towards types of play that the game industry’s big boys can’t or won’t address. The diversity of our exhibits and game projects reflects our belief that creativity breeds creativity. The loose structure of the collective, encompassing a network of developers and collaborators, aims to create synergies between all our various projects."

Git Reference
"This is the Git reference site. This is meant to be a quick reference for learning and remembering the most important and commonly used Git commands. The commands are organized into sections of the type of operation you may be trying to do, and will present the common options and commands needed to accomplish these common tasks.

Each section will link to the next section, so it can be used as a tutorial. Every page will also link to more in-depth Git documentation such as the offical manual pages and relevant sections in the Pro Git book, so you can learn more about any of the commands. First, we'll start with thinking about source code management like Git does."

How One Kitchen Table in Brooklyn Became a School for Coders - Steven Heller - Technology - The Atlantic
""We modeled it after our ideal teaching environment," Pitaru says about the genesis, "which means we only take as many students as can fit around our kitchen table (a maximum of five, because the small number is ideal for group-thinking). The seating arrangement is important, as we all get to talk and look at each other rather than face a big projection on a wall."…

Participants are FIFO or first-come-first-serve. As for instructors "We love having guest instructors mainly because it allows us to become students and learn something new," Pitaru says…

Pitaru was recently contacted by someone who wants to open a Kitchen-Table-Coders in London. "Trademarking doesn't worry me," he says. "I'll be flattered if due to our efforts, more kitchen tables are used for learning code, and happy to help anyone who wishes to do so.""

Quality of Place + Quality of Opportunity = ArtPlace « Art Works
"The old approach to economic development was to send the team out to bag the buffalo and drag it back home. It was all about relocation. But that game has just about played itself out. Do enough of it and there are no buffaloes left to bag—or they are all headed to Vietnam.

What we know now is that economic development emerges from local assets. From the conditions that develop, attract and retain talent. From conditions that encourage creativity and connections. From conditions that encourage diversity of people and ideas and the mash-up of those ideas.

That’s what creative placemaking is really about…putting your local assets to work fully…"

A Culture Clash Where Three Neighborhoods Meet - voiceofsandiego.org: Survival
"South of El Cajon Boulevard, ethnic business leaders and nonprofit advocates…hoped the five acres would become an international marketplace or affordable housing complex.<br />

North of El Cajon Boulevard…saw the vacant lot as an opportunity to finally lay claim to the boulevard, a hodgepodge of ethnic mom-and-pop shops they rarely visit. They wanted something transformative: a Trader Joe's or a Henry's, and maybe a park — but not affordable housing…<br />

Todd Gloria, the area's city councilman, was pleased with the decision to put a YMCA there…<br />

…A few Talmadge residents recently sued the San Diego Unified School District over plans to install stadium lights on the Hoover High football field, saying they feared nighttime events would bring a flood of traffic. The American suburbs are a giant Ponzi scheme | Grist
"Since the end of WWII, our cities & towns have experienced growth using three primary mechanisms:

1. Transfer payments between governments: where the federal or state government makes a direct investment in growth at the local level, such as funding a water or sewer system expansion.

2. Transportation spending: where transportation infrastructure is used to improve access to a site that can then be developed.

3. Public and private-sector debt: where cities, developers, companies, & individuals take on debt as part of the development process, whether during construction or through the assumption of a mortgage.

In each of these mechanisms, the local unit of government benefits from the enhanced revenues associated with new growth. But it also typically assumes the long-term liability for maintaining the new infrastructure. This exchange -- a near-term cash advantage for a long-term financial obligation -- is one element of a Ponzi scheme…"

notes on "an empathetic plan"
"But I do feel that many people who take shots at products (some they don't even pay for) are overly critical of them with no goal of providing their readers or friends with a constructive perspective.<br />
<br />
Worse is when the people doing the complaining also make software or web sites or iPhone applications themselves. As visible leaders of the web, I think there are a lot of folks who could do a favor to younger, less experienced people by setting an example of critiquing to raise up rather than critiquing to tear down.<br />
<br />
If you're a well known web or app developer who complains a lot on Twitter about other people's projects, I am very likely talking about you. You and I both know that there are many reasons why something works a certain way or why something in the backend would affect the way something works on the front-end."<br />

Where does good come from? - The Boston Globe
"Wilson is not arguing that members of certain species don’t sacrifice themselves for the benefit of their relatives. They do. But it’s his position that kinship and relatedness aren’t essential in causing the development of advanced social behaviors like altruism — that the reason such behaviors catch on is that they’re evolutionarily advantageous on a group level. That socially advanced organisms end up favoring their kin, Wilson argues, is a byproduct of their group membership, not the cause.<br />
<br />
“It’s a question of which is the cart and which is the horse,” said Peter Nonacs, a UCLA biologist who shares Wilson’s sense that relatedness and advanced social behavior are not as intimately linked as most scientists think."

It is set in the Australian desert and is about a land feud between a mining company and the native Aborigines. The Aborigines claim that an area the mining company wishes to work on is the place where green ants dream, and that disturbing them will destroy humanity. "the more you focus on control, the more likely you’re working on a project that’s striving to deliver something of relatively minor value" [.pdf]
"The book’s most quoted line is its first sentence: “You can’t control what you can’t measure.” This line contains a real truth, but I’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with my use of it. Implicit in the quote (and indeed in the book’s title) is that control is an important aspect, maybe the most important, of any software project. But it isn’t. Many projects have proceeded without much control but managed to produce wonderful products such as GoogleEarth or Wikipedia…<br />
<br />
This leads us to the odd conclusion that strict control is something that matters a lot on relatively useless projects and much less on useful projects. It suggests that the more you focus on control, the more likely you’re working on a project that’s striving to deliver something of relatively minor value."

Chilean Economist Manfred Max-Neef: US Is Becoming an "Underdeveloping Nation"
"principles of an economics which should be are based in 5 postulates & 1 fundamental value principle…economy is to serve the people & not the people to serve the economy…development is about people & not objects…growth is not the same as development, & development does not necessarily require growth…no economy is possible in the absence of ecosystem services.…the economy is a subsystem of a larger finite system, the biosphere, hence permanent growth is impossible. & the fundamental value to sustain a new economy should be that no economic interest, under no circumstance, can be above the reverence of life.<br />
<br />
…If you go through that list, one after the other, what we have today is exactly the opposite.<br />

Growth is a quantitative accumulation. Development is the liberation of creative possibilities. Every living system in nature grows up to a certain point & stops growing. You are not growing anymore, nor he nor me. But we continue developing ourselves."

HOWTO: Native iPhone/iPad apps in JavaScript
"Until the recent language ban imposed by Apple, I didn't even know that you could write native apps for iPhone and iPad in JavaScript. (I must be the last person to figure this out; it's been possible since 2008!)

In case you're as late to the party as me, it turns out that you can get web apps to behave like native apps. In this article, I'll explain how to:

strip away the browser chrome (the url bar and button bar);
prevent viewport scrolling and scaling;
respond to multi-touch and gesture events;
use webkit CSS to get the iPhone OS look and feel;
cache the app so it runs without internet access;
get a custom icon on the home screen; and
have a splash screen load at the start.

If you want to put it in the app store, you can even package your web app as a "native" Objective-C app. (Although, why you'd want to subject yourself to the app store approval process when you don't have to is beyond me.)"

Curveship: Interactive Fiction + Interactive Narrating
"Curveship is an interactive fiction system that provides a world model (of characters, objects, locations, and things that happen) while also modeling the narrative discourse, so that the narration and description of the simulated world can change. Curveship can tell events out of order, using flashback and other techniques, and can tell the story from the standpoint of particular characters and their perceptions and understandings.<br />
The system has been developed up to this point with advanced users, such as researchers and programmer/authors, in mind. Some understanding of narrative theory, some understanding of interactive fiction, some ability to program in Python, and a willingness to use a command-line system are important to effective use of Curveship at this point. While I hope that Curveship, or components of it, will eventually be of use to a wide variety of users and developers, my initial goal has been to develop a system that will be of value to these groups of people:"

You can do most of it in Interface Builder, and the rest very rapidly in code – without requiring any structural changes to your project. It’s the right thing to do, and I truly hope you’ll consider spend the extra couple of hours to make your app accessible."

Children, Wired: For Better and for Worse — Daphne Bavelier, C. Shawn Green, and Matthew W.G. Dye [.pdf]
"Children encounter technology constantly at home and in school. Television, DVDs, video games, the Internet, and smart phones all play a formative role in children’s development. The term ‘‘technology’ subsumes a large variety of somewhat independent items, and it is no surprise that current research indicates causes for both optimism and concern depending upon the content of the technology, the context in which the technology immerses the user, and the user’s developmental stage. Furthermore, because the field is still in its infancy, results can be surprising: video games designed to be reasonably mindless result in widespread enhancements of various abilities, acting, we will argue, as exemplary learning tools. Counterintuitive outcomes like these, besides being practically relevant, challenge and eventually lead to refinement of theories concerning fundamental principles of brain plasticity and learning."

Our Banana Republic - NYTimes.com
"You no longer need to travel to distant and dangerous countries to observe such rapacious inequality. We now have it right here at home — and in the aftermath of Tuesday’s election, it may get worse.<br />
<br />
The richest 1 percent of Americans now take home almost 24 percent of income, up from almost 9 percent in 1976. As Timothy Noah of Slate noted in an excellent series on inequality, the United States now arguably has a more unequal distribution of wealth than traditional banana republics like Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guyana.<br />
<br />
C.E.O.’s of the largest American companies earned an average of 42 times as much as the average worker in 1980, but 531 times as much in 2001. Perhaps the most astounding statistic is this: From 1980 to 2005, more than four-fifths of the total increase in American incomes went to the richest 1 percent."

Yiibu - About this site...
"The site is designed using the ‘mobile first’ principle. Also incorporated are elements of responsive design.<br />
<br />
The base content and default presentation are mobile, and optimized for the very simplest devices first. We've defined this as 'basic' support.<br />
Devices with small screens and media query support are served an enhanced layout—and occasionally—more complex content. We've called this 'mobile'.<br />
Finally, the layout and content are enhanced to reflect the 'desktop' context.<br />
On the first visit, the server checks for a 'properties' cookie containing specific browser 'feature support' results (obtained from tests carried out by a little bit of JavaScript). Devices that don't supply a 'properties' cookie, or have JavaScript disabled are always served the basic version of the site."<br />

Mobile devices will outpace traditional computers.<br />

Zhook is a simple ebook format. - Ochook.org
"Perhaps you want to craft beautiful ebooks. The open industry-standard format, EPUB, is pretty good and very comprehensive, but it’s not really intended for making books by hand.<br />
*Zhook keeps it simple. Just create a webpage (yes, probably a very long webpage) and zip it up.<br />
*Zhook is really easy to test. You can do most of your testing in Firefox and Safari or Chrome. If you zip and upload it here, you can do further testing and tweaking quite quickly with Ochook.org tools.<br />
*Zhook has higher-fidelity semantics. This is because Zhook uses HTML5, which has more useful semantic elements (like grouping headings together with hgroup, or captioning an image with figure). We have good uses for all that semantic richness, as you’ll see.<br />
<br />
And perhaps most importantly: * Zhook makes a best-of-breed EPUB."

Learning from the Extremes - Charlie Leadbeater & Annika Wong [.pdf] [also referenced: http://www.core77.com/blog/education/_learning_from_the_extremes_-_charlie_leadbeater_annika_wong_15823.asp]
"Leadbeater makes further point about increasing relative ignorance that is highly significant for teaching & learning. It is that we can & must put ignorance to work–to make it useful–to provide opportunities for ourselves & others to live innovative & creative lives. “What holds people back from taking risks, is often as not…their knowledge, not their ignorancel.” Useful ignorance becomes a space of pedagogical possibility rather than base that needs to be covered. ‘Not knowing’ needs to be put to work w/out shame or bluster…Our highest educational achievers may well be aligned w/ teachers in knowing what to do if & when they have script. But…this sort of certain & tidy knowing is out of alignment w/ script-less & fluid social world. Out best learners will be those who can make ‘not knowing’ useful, do not need blueprint, template, map, to make new kind of sense. This is one new disposition that academics as teachers need to acquire fast–disposition to be usefully ignorant."

Design and Reach - Innovating for Affordable Private Schools
"One of the most exciting movements I’ve seen recently in the social enterprise world is the development of Affordable Private Schools. Approximately 100 million children in the developing world are attending ultra low-cost private schools (generally less than $10/month in school fees). Their parents (typically low or working class, living at the base of the pyramid) choose to invest their limited income in their children's education and realize that the affordable private schools tend to offer a far superior education to the local public schools."

"The things which I’ve painted as trivial here are admittedly anything but. But they are, I sincerely believe, how we’re going to handle — have to handle — the human interface to this so-called Internet of Things we keep talking about. Each of the networked resources in the world, whether location or service or object or human being, is going to have to be characterized in a consistent, natural, interoperable way, and we’re going to have to offer folks equally high-level environments for process composition using these resources. We’re going to have to devise architectures and frameworks that let ordinary people everywhere interact with all the networked power that is everywhere around them, and do so in a way that doesn’t add to their existing burden of hassle and care.

The myth of “programming is the only creativity”
"The geeks – the people who have, so far, been the dominant part of culture in technology and the Internet – are like priests of a religion that finds themselves no longer the centre of their culture’s world. They are displaying all the standard behaviours of a dying religion: Flocking to new prophets, who aggresively promote their message; lashing out bitterly at the heretics who are “betraying” them; and even trying desperately to preserve their way of life by saying “look how easy it is to become a priest!”"

Every user a developer: A brief history, with hopeful branches « Adam Greenfield's Speedbird
"the corpus of people able to develop functionality, to “program” for a given system, has been dwindling as a percentage of interactive technology’s total userbase…Alan Kay’s definition of full technical literacy, remember, was the ability to both read & write in a given medium — to create, as well as consume. And by these lights, we’ve been moving further & further away from literacy & the empowerment it so reliably entrains for a very long time now. … we need to articulate a way of thinking about interactive functionality & its development that is appropriate to an era in which virtually everyone on the planet spends some portion of their day using networked devices; to a context in which such devices & interfaces are utterly pervasive in the world, & the average person is confronted with a multiplicity of same in the course of a day; and to the cloud architecture that undergirds that context. Given these constraints, neither applications nor “apps” are quite going to cut it"

Raph’s Website » Games and the Creativity Crisis
"since around 1990, American kids have been getting measurably less creative. Alas, early in the article, we see games getting blamed...Is this in fact the case? After all, the rest of the article (and the rest of the research in the field) seems to suggest that handing students problems and obliging them to think about possible solutions, is a much better way to go than rote memorization. And that is what the best games do. But it is also definitely true that many games these days “come with the answers”...Personally, I have always found creativity to be all about juxtaposing concepts and ideas from different fields and places, making unexpected connections...it behooves us as game developers to at least attempt to make games that encourage creative thinking, if not out of some sense of civic or moral obligation, then as a way of “paying it forward” — something made us creative enough to make the games in the first place, so we shouldn’t hog all the fun."

Minimum viable product - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"A Minimum Viable Product has just those features (and no more) that allows the product to be deployed. The product is typically deployed to a subset of possible customers, such as early adopters that are thought to be more forgiving, more likely to give feedback, and able to grasp a product vision from an early prototype or marketing information. It is a strategy targeted at avoiding building products that customers do not want, that seeks to maximize the information learned about the customer per dollar spent. "The minimum viable product is that version of a new product which allows a team to collect the maximum amount of validated learning about customers with the least effort.""

interactions magazine | Adaptive Reuse: Things, Containers, and Streets in the Architecture of the Social Web
"There is an aesthetic here, but it’s less a visual aesthetic than an enacted, functional one, an aesthetic of use and organization. The container is understood through its activation: To know it, it must be occupied. The street is understood through navigation: To know it, it must be traversed. This is the space that Manuel Castells refers to as “the space of flows”—”the technological and organizational possibility of practicing simultaneity without contiguity. It also refers to the possibility of asynchronous interaction in chosen time, at a distance” [9]. When the discussion moves from form to relationships, distinctions between different architectures—whether built, information, or experience architectures—give way, and common modes emerge from these different disciplines."

VUE 24: Darling Hammond Article: Steady Work: How Finland Is Building a Strong Teaching and Learning System
"Indeed, there are no external standardized tests used to rank students or schools in Finland, and most teacher feedback to students is in narrative form, emphasizing descriptions of their learning progress and areas for growth (Sahlberg 2007). As is the case with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) exams in the United States, samples of students are evaluated on open-ended assessments at the end of the second and ninth grades to inform curriculum and school investments. The focus is on using information to drive learning and problem solving, rather than punishments." [One quote does not give sense of the article. SSRN-Idea Generation and the Quality of the Best Idea by Karan Girotra, Christian Terwiesch, Karl Ulrich
"In a wide variety of organizational settings, teams generate a number of possible solutions to a problem, and then select a few for further investigation. We examine the effectiveness of two creative problem solving processes for such tasks - one, where the group works together as a team (the team process), and the other where individuals first work alone and then work together (the hybrid process). ... In our experimental set-up, we find that groups employing the hybrid process are able to generate more ideas, to generate better ideas, and to better discern their best ideas compared to teams that rely purely on group work. Moreover, we find that the frequently recommended brainstorming technique of building on each other’s ideas is counter-productive: teams exhibiting such build-up neither create more ideas nor are the ideas that build on previous ideas better."
