Dr. Chris Mullen, The Visual Telling of Stories, illustration, design, film, narrative sequences, magazines, books, prints etc

"This site records a range of material dedicated to the study of the Visual Narrative. The original site, intended by me for part-time students and other interested parties was closed down by the University of Brighton in 2004. prosthetic knowledge • One Page Graphic Novel: The Thames Megalodon The...
The above image appears to be some kind of map, but is actually an attempt to tell a big story within one frame. In a way, it is a game of narrative, as there is a list of important points to make as you guide yourself through it.

From the creaor, Henry Flint:

"Welcome to a new story telling medium… the One Page Graphic Novel. Is this a gimmick? Yes, probably.

Keith is a dustman who is shot into the future by a Time Vortex. He meets three companions and they start an epic adventure and It’s up to you to fill in the gaps."

A higher resolution version of the image can be found at Henry’s site here [click on the map]"

Calvin and Hobbes and the Trouble with Nostalgia | Splitsider
"In an explanation of Hobbes’s dual reality (a living, breathing, wiseass wild tiger to Calvin, and a stuffed animal to everyone else), Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson explains “I show two versions of reality, and each makes complete sense to the participant who sees it. I think that’s how life works.” We see the world through Calvin’s eyes. This perspective distinguishes the strip from Peanuts, in which kids talk like adults, or Cathy or Doonesbury, in which adults talk like adults. Watterson constantly fought with Universal Press Syndicate and newspapers to get more space, and to break the rigid rules of comic strip formats in order to formally explore Calvin’s imagination. As a result, no daily comic in wide circulation during the Nineties provided such regular and creative insights into a child’s interior life. In Calvin and Hobbes, Watterson takes us inside Calvin’s dreams, his fears, and the stories that he makes up for himself."

Schwa (art) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Schwa is the underground conceptual artwork of Bill Barker (born 1957). Barker draws deceptively simple black and white stick figures and oblong alien ships. However the artwork is not about the aliens: it is about how people react to the presence of the aliens and Barker uses them as a metaphor for foreign and unknown ideas. Schwa became an underground hit in the 1990s."<br />

Interview with Chris Ware Part 1 of 2 « The Comics Journal
"This interview was conducted in front of a live audience in May 2010 at Komiks.dk, the international Copenhagen comics festival. Ware was an official guest of the festival and his visit coincided with the Danish publication of Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth. I concentrated on that book, but also tried to address more general issues in Ware’s work and extended the discussion to his current books.<br />
<br />
I found it an inspiring talk, to the extent that I went a wrote an essay on the book, posted nearby. My thanks to Mr. Ware for graciously accepting to do it, and for sitting through what was no doubt an extended ordeal for him.<br />

Five Card Flickr
"This quasi experimental web site is designed to foster visual thinking. It is based completely, or more loosely... copied, from the Five Card Nancy game devised by comics guru Scott McCloud & the nifty web version at 741.5 Comics.<br />
However, rather than drawing from a hand of randomly chosen panels of the old Nancy comic, my version draws upon collections of photos specified by a tag in flickr. You are dealt five random photos for each draw, and your task is to select one each time to add to a selection of images, that taken together as a final set of 5 images- tell a story in pictures.<br />
When you are done, you the option to add a title and explanation, then you can save the story so you can put a link in your resume or send to your Mom…Plus we offer the ability to tweet your story or use an embed code to add it to your own web site.<br />
What do they look like? What a fantastic question you ask!<br />

A humble plea to Alan Moore and Banksy - Neven Mrgan's tumbl
"I want the world we live in to include a comic book written by Alan Moore & drawn by Banksy…<br />
<br />
They’re both hypereducated, well-spoken British gentlemen with a wicked anarchist bend, a sort of giddy nihilism at the midpoint between the extremes of love for the human animal and complete disgust with it. They have very little shit to give for society’s rules that keep things in order, but they’re almost clinically empathetic of the individual. & they’re damn funny, on top.<br />
<br />
Look, Banksy is practically already a Moore character (V, of course.) As for Moore, his sleeveless attire, wizard-beard, and baby smile are made for a Banksy piece; maybe he holds a bouquet of tulips over a Detroit slum, I don’t know. Their hometowns - which I bet they’re both awfully nostalgic about - are 100 miles from each other. Moore can curl up in his bed with his notebook and his tea while Banksy flies to LA or Tripoli or wherever, and how could they not churn out gold? Let me have this fantasy, alright."

Letters of Note: Be your own self. Love what YOU love.
"When asked in 1991 to describe an obstacle he had faced during his lifetime and the subsequent effect of his overcoming it, author Ray Bradbury replied to schoolteacher William Stanhope with the following letter. "most important decision i ever made came at age 9...i was collecting BUCK ROGERS comic strips, 1929, when my 5th grade classmates made fun of me. I tore up the strips. A week later, broke into tears. Why was I crying? I wondered. Who die? Me, was the answer. I have torn up the future. What to do about it? Start collecting BUCK ROGERS again. Fall in love with the Future! I did just that. And after that never listened to one damnfool idiot classmate who doubted me! What did I learn? To be myself and never let others, prejudiced, interfer with my life. Kids, do the same. Be your own self. Love what YOU love."

The Nerdy Teacher: Stranger Than Fiction?
"took me 2 years & tons of leg work to create a Graphic Novel Class. (officially Pictorial Lit because community might be bothered by class w/ word graphic in it.) I saw a hole in curriculum for certain group of students & thought a class that had different offerings would appeal to them.<br />
<br />
I teach Bone by Jeff Smith as an Epic Novel comparing it to The Odyssey, The Lord of the Rings & Star Wars. I also teach Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Maus by Art Spiegelman & graphic versions of Poe & Twain Short Stories. I also do a cool Dystopian Novel Unit using Watchmen, Dark Knight, V for Vendetta & Kingdom Come. Our textbook is Scott McLoud's Understanding Comics. It's been an an exciting class that is run no differently than any other literature based class. I'm constantly tweaking it & is better this year than it was last. It's time for curricula to change around the country. No longer are classics of my youth (high school in 90s) the classics of today's classroom."

Announcing SVK: an experimental publication by Warren Ellis, D’Israeli & BERG – Blog – BERG
"What is SVK?<br />
It’s going to be a very beautifully-printed object – a graphic novella, drawn by one of our very favourite artists – Matt “D’Israeli” Brooker – who Warren collaborated with on “Lazarus Churchyard” back in 1991. I think I’m right in saying it’s their first major collaboration since then…<br />
<br />
We can’t tell you too much more just yet, as they are both currently hard at work on it, but Warren describes SVK as “Franz Kafka’s Bourne Identity”.<br />
<br />
Brilliant.<br />
<br />
It’s also a story about looking, and it’s an investigation into perception, storytelling and optical experimentation that inherits some of the curiosities behind previous work of the studio such as our Here & There maps of Manhattan.<br />
<br />
For us – it’s also an investigation into new ways to get things out in the world, and as a result we’re talking about SVK now because we’re looking for people, brands and companies who would like to be in the SVK project… "

Great Teacher Onizuka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"seeing this display of a teacher's power over girls, decides to become a teacher himself. In his quest, he discovers 2 important things: He has a conscience & a sense of morality. This means taking advantage of impressionable schoolgirls is out…; He enjoys teaching & most of the time, he teaches life lessons rather than routine schoolwork; He hates the systems of traditional education, especially when they have grown ignorant & condescending to students & their needs.<br />
W/ these realizations, he sets out to become greatest teacher ever, using his own brand of philosophy & ability to do nearly anything even when under enough pressure. He is hired as a long-shot teacher by privately operated school to tame class that has driven 1 teacher to a mysterious death, one to nervous breakdown, & one to joining a cult. He embarks on a mission of self-discovery by breaking through to each student one by one, & helping each student to overcome their problems & learn to genuinely enjoy life."

Reboot (fiction) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The term reboot, in media dealing with serial fiction, means to discard much or even all previous continuity in the series and start anew with fresh ideas. Effectively, all established fictive history is declared by the writer(s) to be null and void, or at least irrelevant to the new storyline, and the series starts over as if brand-new.<br />
<br />
Through reboots, film franchises are revamped and reinvigorated to attract new fans and stimulate economic revenue. Therefore, reboots can be seen as attempts to rescue franchises which have grown "stale". They can also be a "safe" project for a studio, as a reboot with an established fan base is less risky (in terms of expected profit) than an original work."

Down Argentine Way
"“I saw a really bad knockoff of one of my characters painted on a kiosk, and I felt like ‘Yes! I’ve finally made it!’  ” says Argentina’s Ricardo Siri Liniers, known by his nom de comics, Liniers. The artist is referring to one of the newsstands that line the streets of Buenos Aires and that sell an eclectic mix of magazines, comics, and high-brow literature. Homemade paintings of well-known comics characters often adorn the city’s kiosks: Homer Simpson is a favorite. For Liniers, the newsstand homage was proof of his growing influence in the Argentine comics scene, and of a movement from obscurity to cult status."

Book Review - 'Logicomix' - A Comic Book About Logic, Math and Madness - Review - NYTimes.com
"Well, this is unexpected — a comic book about the quest for logical certainty in mathematics. The story spans the decades from the late 19th century to World War II, a period when the nature of mathematical truth was being furiously debated. The stellar cast, headed up by Bertrand Russell, includes the greatest philosophers, logicians and mathematicians of the era, along with sundry wives and mistresses, plus a couple of homicidal maniacs, an apocryphal barber and Adolf Hitler. Improbable material for comic-book treatment? Not really. The principals in this intellectual drama are superheroes of a sort. They go up against a powerful nemesis, who might be called Dark Antinomy. Each is haunted by an inner demon, the Specter of Madness. Their quest has a tragic arc, not unlike that of Superman or Donald Duck."

Cool Tools: The United States Constitution
"This lively graphic novel adaptation of the Constitution is by far the best aid I've found to deciphering its code. It is the comic book version, but rather than dumbing it down, it smartens it up. The graphic novel goes through the Constitution article by article, and explains what each bit means, why it is there, and how it came to be. Like the Bible, the Constitution doesn't say what you thought it did. I was surprised what was not there as well as what was. I learned tons from this annotation, despite studying it in high school. It renewed my respect for it, and in a way, also makes clear its limitation. I feel I can be a slightly better citizen. Best of all, this book does all that with pictures, which makes it a page-turner."

Confessions of an Aca/Fan: Archives: Henry's [Comic] Book Club: My Personal Rec List of Graphic Novels
"One of my wife's friends has recently been smitten by Scott McCloud's Zot!. As someone who read through the recent collection of Zot! in almost a single sitting (albeit in a hospital bed), I was highly sympathetic with her plight. I offered to draw up a list of recommendations for some other graphic novels she might enjoy, using Zot! as the starting point for calibrating her tastes. Having put in enough time to develop such a list, I figured it was worth passing along to my readers here. So, keep in mind that this was never intended as an all purpose set of comic recs. My bet, however, is that even many of you who have been known to pick up a comic from time to time will find some works here you didn't already know that you will find worth reading. This list consists of Anglo-American graphic novels which for one reason or another have emerged as personal favorites. Eurocomics and Manga would require whole separate listings, another project for another day."

The citizens were transformed and stranded when part of the city of San Diego was submerged by an artificially generated earthquake, the result of a plan which changed part of the surviving population into subaquatic beings. It is the home city of Lorena Marquez, the second Aquagirl, and led by Mayor Cal Durham an old ally of Aquaman. The city was recently used as a base of operations by Arthur Curry (Aquaman)." …My heart’s in Accra » Fun and games with human misery
"For me, either the suspiciously accurate novel or the eminently readable comic go a long way in turning a distant – though critical – concern into a real, tangible problem. It makes me wish that more journalists and activists would look for creative ways to tell these stories and make them more real to readers."

Raph’s Website » The perfect geek age?
"Was being born in 1971 the perfect time to be born a geek? ... [long list of examples here] ... Looking back on it, it makes me feel a bit sorry for those born ten years later. And I can’t judge ten years earlier, but so much of that seemed to hit at the right age. Looking back at history, it seems like the last big waves of popular invention like this were decades ago. Teens with hot rods? Engineering in the 20s? I see my kids now, and they are so clearly getting the finished products of so much, not the products in the process of invention… Am I wrong?"

An interview with "Watchmen" creator Alan Moore | Salon Books
"None of my education really comes from school. ... I found that once I'd been expelled from school, I was compelled to educate myself and I found this a very entertaining and easy process. ... All too often education actually acts as a form of aversion therapy, that what we're really teaching our children is to associate learning with work and to associate work with drudgery so that the remainder of their lives they will possibly never go near a book because they associate books with learning, learning with work and work with drudgery. Whereas after a hard day's toil, instead of relaxing with a book they'll be much more likely to sit down in front of an undemanding soap opera because this is obviously teaching them nothing, so it is not learning, so it is not work, it is not drudgery, so it must be pleasure. And I think that that is the kind of circuitry that we tend to have imprinted on us because of the education process."

Blambot Comic Fonts and Lettering
" Comic book lettering has some grammatical and aesthetic traditions that are quite unique. What follows is a list that every letterer eventually commits to his/her own mental reference file. The majority of these points are established tradition, sprinkled with modern trends and a bit of my own opinion having lettered professionally for a few years now. The majority of these ideas have been established by Marvel and DC, but opinions vary from editor to editor, even within the same company. I'm often asked to bend or break these rules based on what "feels" best, or more likely, the space constraints within a panel.

Education - Change.org: Reading Despite Teaching (Or, "How the Hulk Led Me to Hamlet")
"my public school teachers probably had no idea that their desperate attempts to make us students engage in sincere reflection about books through book reports were so futile because we were naturally reflecting on our own cultural texts in authentic social reading groups—normally in the woods in our neighborhood. If my goal as a language arts teacher is to make good book-reporters of my kids, then I should keep assigning book reports; but if I want to make them lifelong readers who read like we adults do—we read books and discuss them with others—I’ll allow authentic book chats in class."

"But then in an almost throw-away aside to Adam, he reflected that the modern Bond villain (and he might have added, villains in pop culture in general) is placeless, ubiquitous, mobile. His hidden fortress is in the network, represented only by a briefcase, or perhaps even just a mobile phone. Where’s the fun in that for a production designer? Maybe it’s in the objects. It’s not the pictures that got small, but the places our villains draw they powers from." ... "So - for a “4th generation warfare” supervillain there aren’t even objects for the production designer to create and imbue with personality. The effects and the consequences can be illustrated by the storytelling, but the network and the intent can’t be foreshadowed by environments and objects in the impressionist way that Adam employed to support character and storytelling. But - what about materialising, visualising these invisible networks in order to do so?"

Instead my parents made a deal with a local manhwabang (manga rental shop) so that i can have unlimited access to their books. I went everyday for one or two books to bring home so my elder sisters could read them to when they returned from school. It continued for more than a year till i had to go to school and learned to play with other kids..."
