Draftastic
10 days ago by robertogreco
"Draftastic is a new kind of collaborative editor. We make it simple for any number of people to edit the same document at once without getting in each other’s way.
Co-authoring a paper? Copyediting the next big novel? Brainstorming that business plan? Sick of mailing Word files back and forth? Draftastic can help.
Draftastic lets everyone type in the same document at once, but will never let anyone type over you. Simple as that. You can learn more in our Q & A, but the best way to learn about it is to try it with a friend."

"The School of Walls & Space investigates contemporary notions of space, its production, privatization & the role of the artist as a critical and political agent within it, & uses both traditional & more experimental pedagogical methods.
The School is a multi-layered micro-institution that encourages the development of an inter-disciplinary research-based practice. It balances individual mentoring w/ collective group activities. The school uses traditional pedagogical methods: group & one-to-one crits, seminars and talks, in conjunction w/ the exploration of more experimental collaborative teaching models which the School researches and develops collectively as a group. These include brain storming techniques, games, charettes, group activities, actions & happenings. It also explores historical practices, such as psychogeography & the derive, & the experimental teaching methods of Paolo Freire, Roy Ascott, Paul Goodman, & Colin Ward…"

The Fans Are All Right (Pinboard Blog)
october 2011 by robertogreco
"I learned a lot about fandom couple of years ago in conversations with my friend Britta, who was working at the time as community manager for Delicious. She taught me that fans were among the heaviest users of the bookmarking site, and had constructed an edifice of incredibly elaborate tagging conventions, plugins, and scripts to organize their output along a bewildering number of dimensions. If you wanted to read a 3000 word fic where Picard forces Gandalf into sexual bondage, and it seems unconsensual but secretly both want it, and it's R-explicit but not NC-17 explicit, all you had to do was search along the appropriate combination of tags (and if you couldn't find it, someone would probably write it for you). By 2008 a whole suite of theoretical ideas about folksonomy, crowdsourcing, faceted infomation retrieval, collaborative editing and emergent ontology had been implemented by a bunch of friendly people so that they could read about Kirk drilling Spock."

Doors of Perception weblog: xskool: breathing the same air
august 2011 by robertogreco
"…We converged, instead, on the idea that "X" means: this place, this moment, these people. Breathing the same air. Only here, only now.
Our group also embraced the idea of no curriculum, no standardised process, no teachers, and no certificates…
1 An explanation: Xskool enables people to create unique events in which change-minded people participate, interact, and reflect.
2 Xskool is not for people who see themselves as leaders, role models, experts or 'change agents'. Xskoolers might well be leaders, role models etc - but that is not for them to decide…
5 At each xskool encounter, a host venue or location will present a task or a question for the visiting group to work on. At West Lexham our task was to build this path:
6 Each xskool group will also work on a question or questions of its own. This question will not be posed in advance; rather, it will emerge from a mindfully-orqanised process [such as Open Space or World Café] when the group first assembles at the location…"

Education Week: The Classroom Is Obsolete: It's Time for Something New
august 2011 by robertogreco
"The following is a fairly universal list of education design principles for tomorrow’s schools, though it would be tailored to the needs of particular communities: (1) personalized; (2) safe & secure; (3) inquiry-based; (4) student-directed; (5) collaborative; (6) interdisciplinary; (7) rigorous & hands-on; (8) embodying a culture of excellence & high expectations; (9) environmentally conscious; (10) offering strong connections to the local community & business; (11) globally networked; & (12) setting the stage for lifelong learning.<br />
<br />
In designing a school for tomorrow, such underlying principles should drive the discussion…would allow us to address questions around how students should learn, where they should learn, & w/ whom should they learn. We may discover that we need teachers to work in teams…We may conclude that it makes no sense to break down the school day into fixed “periods,” & that state standards can be better met via interdisciplinary & real-world projects."

Vol 4, No 1 (2010) The New Cooperativism
may 2011 by robertogreco
"Cooperative practices and values that challenge the status quo while, at the same time, creating alternative modes of economic, cultural, social, and political life have emerged with dynamism in recent years. The 15 articles in this issue--written by activists, coop practitioners, theorists, historians, and researchers--begin to make visible some of the myriad modes of cooperation existing today around the world that both directly respond to new enclosures and crises and show pathways beyond them. Prefiguring other possibilities for organizing life and provisioning for our needs and desires, we call these cooperative experiments the new cooperativism."

Neogeography - Wikipedia
may 2011 by robertogreco
"Neogeography literally means "new geography" (aka Volunteered Geographic Information), and is commonly applied to the usage of geographical techniques and tools used for personal and community activities or for utilization by a non-expert group of users. Application domains of neogeography are typically not formal or analytical.…<br />
<br />
The term neogeography was first defined in its contemporary sense by Randall Szott on 7 April 2006, and elaborated on May 27, 2006. He argued for a broad scope, to include artists, psychogeography, and more. The technically-oriented aspects of the field, far more tightly defined than in Szott's definition, were outlined by Andrew Turner in his Introduction to Neogeography (O'Reilly, 2006). The contemporary use of the term, and the field in general, owes much of its inspiration to the locative media movement that sought to expand the use of location-based technologies to encompass personal expression and society."

Critical Technology: Networked and Open also means Collaborative
march 2011 by robertogreco
"This is what the Networked & Open PhD (NOPhD) is all about. It is about working w/ others in an open & collaborative way so everyone deepens their knowledge on a shared subject domain. The great part would be if everyone who is in the collaborative cohort aspired to develop a PhD level of knowing w/in the subject they share a passion. Due to the networked (& collaborative) aspect of NOPhD I believe a number of people in the cohort need to make it to PhD depth of knowing, otherwise it couldn't be considered networked. So I have faith & begin to encourage (& hopefully inspire) people around me (virtually & otherwise) who are interested in this pursuit of developing a deeper knowing of Folk Music & Dance. & those interested in pedagogy, technology & life-long learning; for I will be drawing on these skills & knowledge as I build upon this anchor subject.<br />
<br />
So what exactly does this look like?…why don't I describe my week & how certain events fit into the networked & collaborative"

Live sessions include streaming audio & video from me & students, shared text chat & whiteboard, & my ability to push slides & lead tours of websites. Future classes will cover advanced use of personal knowledge tools, social media for educators, participatory media/collective action, social media issues, introduction to cooperation studies, network & social network literacy, social media literacies, attention skills in an always-on world."

SpeEdChange: A Middle School that Works [Project-based everything, individually crafted, team focused, individual education plans for all, "extra" curricular]
january 2011 by robertogreco
"The middle school is really just junior high school continued, & that was always a bad idea. Kids stumble through a bizarrely carved up yet age-dependent curriculum, & nothing could be less appropriate. There is no age range w/ a greater range of individual skills no matter the birth date, & there is no age range where getting kids interested in school is harder…kids 11-14 have a million things, really important things, to learn - about themselves, society, life, their bodies, & almost none of those things are taught in schools.<br />
Meanwhile, the grades, subject areas, sports teams, honor rolls - even corridors - of middle school are essentially designed (a) to encourage bullying, & (b) to make kids see school as worthless & irrelevant.<br />
…divide Middle School Grades into 9 large, & 3 "mini" project-based experiences…which kids choose. Completely interdisciplinary…<br />
Kids would pick three 10-week experiences & 1 shorter experience each year, and that is what they would do all day."

The generative web event « Snarkmarket [Important post stiching together two other important posts on the future of media]
august 2010 by robertogreco
"One new kind of media that’s starting to function as a work is a blog. Not, in most cases, a blog post—but a blog. If NYTimes decides, “hey, we’re going to start & host a blog all about parenting” that blog becomes a Work. It produces ongoing cultural focus, & not just because it’s in NYT. Some posts get more attention than others, especially if they cross over into long-form venue, but writing that blog, sticking with it, being its author, creates focus, readership & long accumulation of content. & I’m sure Lisa Belkin (already wrote a book about parenting) will get another book out of it.
But the other new, emergent work, which might be more radical, is the generative web event. 48HrMag, One Week | One Tool, Robin’s novellas & maybe even New Liberal Arts (especially if we put together another edition) are all ancestral species of this new thing—children of TED, Phoot Camp, Long Now, Iron Chef, & parents of whatever’s going to come next."

Teacher Magazine: Teaching Commission Pushes Collaborative Learning Teams
july 2010 by robertogreco
While this article is primarily about teachers collaborating, the same approach works well for students in the classroom. Of course, modeling the approach is the most effective way of getting student buy-in/understanding. The sidebar ("NCTAF’s Six Principles of Success for Professional Learning Teams") describes the TCSNMY class experience. For example: "Self-Directed Reflection: Teams should establish a feedback loop of goal-setting, planning, standards, and evaluation, driven by the needs of both teachers and students."

The GOOD Guide to Better Neighborhoods: Create a Neighborhood Clubhouse - The Neighborhoods Issue - GOOD [from: http://fieldfaring.org/]
april 2010 by robertogreco
"From 2004-2007, artists Ted Purves & Susanne Cockrell ran a store in their Oakland, CA, neighborhood that sold nothing. Instead, the Reading Room was filled with loaner books about the area’s rich history, &—because that rich history included the planting of abundant orchards—it was also a place people could stop by to get some fruit, gratis. Before long, it was a bona fide local clubhouse. Purves gives advice for those who’d like to do the same. Pick your vibe...Have a purpose...Make it inviting. Free food is always nice, but so are less tangible things like workshops, movie days, & conversation-friendly layout. “Often people would come by & we wouldn’t even have to talk to them because they would start talking to each other. I think having a dinner table in middle steered them into that rather than into private experiences, as a cafe does.”...Have a bathroom people can use...Tap other people's talents...“When someone brought up an idea...we’d say do it"

Our goal is to extend the current usage of mobile phones by turning them into noise sensors enabling each citizen to measure his own exposure in his everyday environment. Furthermore each user could also participate to the creation of a collective map of noise pollution by sharing automatically his geolocalized measures with the community.

Trends in Ed, 2.18.10 | EdLab - Math sees a future with web 2.0
february 2010 by robertogreco
"Is it a match made in Heaven? According to Maria Droujkova, developer of Natural Math and Math 2.0, it is! Droujikova saw the need for math to catch up to other subjects with regards to web 2.0 communities. Her response was to create math programs in which learning takes place within communities and networks-- a mashup between traditional math practices and social networking. This has given birth to the concept of social math:"

Experimental School Gets Rid of Classes, Teachers : NPR
february 2010 by robertogreco
"imagine a school where the organizational structure is completely flat. At the New Country School in Henderson, MN, there is no front office. Visitors are immediately embraced by an airy atrium that is the centerpiece of this one-room schoolhouse...all around the room, New Country's 124 students sit at desks — real office desks — working at their own personal computers. The feeling is comfortable...hum of constant conversation, none of the screaming & yelling heard in a traditional school. Kids are free to move about the school, so there's no need for hall passes or for teachers to patrol the hall. & there's no need to send kids to the office...Students spend most of their day in front of their computers, working on interdisciplinary projects. If they're working on a history project, they have to do enough writing to fulfill the state curriculum requirements. If they don't fulfill the requirements, they have to do another project."

School of the Future
february 2010 by robertogreco
"The building of the School of the Future is the launching pad for the art movement of education. SotF is an artist-run school for teaching artists. The school focuses on teaching artists as experts in the study of information through performing and visual arts; it serves as the first site devoted to the resourcefulness and adaptability of teaching artists. Each curriculum developed for the school is an art project, making the school a group show. The projects will be designed to use art as a learning process that activates and considers the site of the school."

Haiti Rewired [via: http://snarkmarket.com/2010/5054]
january 2010 by robertogreco
"Will foreign aid to Haiti fail this time? Or will the tragedy bring with it a chance to reboot one of the world's poorest countries -- & rethink the the traditional ways of delivering aid & development?...the disaster may prove to be a unique chance for an architectural & communications reboot of an entire country. That's why we've created this community, Haiti Rewired. We believe that better answers to the difficult questions could be created through the collaboration of technologists, researchers, geographers, infrastructure specialists, aid groups & others. Our writers & editors can aggregate information, report new stories & add to the discussion, but the focus of this effort is squarely on the thoughts, plans & actions of our contributors...we want to test (5) simple principles that could transform not only Haiti, but the world's response to crisis: Collaboration, Transparency, Innovation, Design, & DIY." http://haitirewired.wired.com/profiles/blogs/haiti-rewireds-mission

Design Observer - This is My Process
june 2009 by robertogreco
"writers acknowledge that nature of work is changing in 21st century..."a shift from an industrial economy to an information economy, from physical work to knowledge work."...propose a model based not on industrial production, but on the collaborative arts, specifically theater. Interestingly, the process of mounting a play...The iterative process, the role of improvisation, the adjustments that are made in response to audience feedback...not advocating a "loose" process or one that lacks rigor...defining characteristics of this kind of work: allowing solutions to emerge in a process of iteration, rather than trying to get everything right the first time; accepting the lack of control in the process & letting the improvisation engendered by uncertainty help drive the process; & creating a work environment that sets clear enough limits that people can play securely within them. They call this artful making..."any activity that involves creating something entirely new.""

"In rich world, the need to adapt to a generation of kids who are more unique, social, connected, autonomous & collaborative, sometimes know more than professors themselves. In developing world, the need to adapt to the social context of millions who are left out of traditional system...Self education is not new...Collaborative learning beats top down processes...Education can be free...Diplomas are increasingly irrelevant...Education is a fascinating topic, one that is hard to deal with because everybody has an opinion on how it should happen. We are about to see a brutal evolution...Who will vehemently resist these ideas? Teachers...Like journalists when they saw millions of web users invade their territory, they will instinctively want to fight back & protect their experts status. It's a lost war, the wrong approach. Educators will eventually settle in their new, improved place in society. After all, isn’t it more rewarding to collaborate than to direct, monitor, grade & punish?"

Making art a team sport - Los Angeles Times
january 2009 by robertogreco
"Of all the city’s cultural resources – prestigious schools, ambitious museums, a robust gallery scene – the most significant by far is its ever-welling population of artists, and it’s from this pool that these organizations have arisen: institutions that function, to one degree or another, as art projects in themselves, driven by ideas and a spirit of collaboration, whose offbeat programming aims to challenge the boundaries of what we conceive art to be."...“The idea with Machine,” says Allen, “was that we would feed in ideas & different people & different technologies and it would be generative, it would be constantly producing projects, so that the people who might be our audience one day might be teaching a class the next day, and somebody who learns something in one of the classes might be producing a project with that knowledge later in the gallery. So that there was more of a flow of resources, more of a rhizomatic model, if I dare, than the sort of traditional gallery system.”

"Marshall McLuhan pointed out that whenever we get our hands on a new medium we tend to use it like older ones. Early TV broadcasts consisted of guys sitting around reading radio scripts because nobody had realized yet that TV could tell stories differently. It's the same with much of today's webcam video; most people still try to emulate TV and film. Only weirdos like MadV are really exploring its potential.

Planning to Share versus Just Sharing at EdTechPost
december 2008 by robertogreco
"Contrast this with these formal initiatives to network “organizations.” In my experience, these start with meetings in which people first agree that sharing is a good idea, and then follow up meetings to decide what they might share, then, somewhere way down the line, some sharing might happen. The whole time, some of the parts of a network are already present and could have just started sharing what they have, heck they could have started before ever meeting, even WITHOUT ever meeting, but this never happens. (I say part, because if it’s a network it will grow to include many others not in any intial group.)"

december 2008 by robertogreco
"Schools’ automatic immune response has been to try to control the ELN by creating boundaries & regulations aimed at “protecting” the institution & those within it...need to protect itself from obsolescence, thus bureaucracy in charge of creating rules & regulations...This type of safety net rests on top of the institution’s members–not under them, preventing a free flow of potentially useful information. In an age when the tools for sharing, collaboration, and collective action are ubiquitous and dirt cheap, a controlling paradigm can be quite limiting and counter-productive." ... "PLNs & ELNs function best when they form organically–not due to decree or lengthy planning; when they can tap into the power of disparate voices–often found outside of the institution; are need-driven, amorphous, self-organizing, self-policing, fluid, permeable & control-wary. In other words, when they are given access to everything schools pretty much hate."

"EtherPad is a collaborative, real-time text editor created by, among others, two ex-Google employees*. An EtherPad document is quickly set up without any need for registration. You can then share the URL of the document, and others who will visit that page will then be able to see, in real-time, whatever you’re typing**. This has an interesting feel to it because there’s no “security buffer” as in typical chat programs: every letter you write will be shown as you write it, including occasional errors before you fix them."

"But at the same time, Mr. Obama’s notion of persistent improvement, both of himself and of his country, reflects something newer — the collaborative, decentralized principles behind Net projects like Wikipedia and the “free and open-source software” movement. The qualities he cited to Time to describe his campaign — “openness and transparency and participation” — were ones he said “merged perfectly” with the Internet. And they may well be the qualities that make him the first real “wiki-candidate.”"
