"If you think your bike looks good, it does.
If you like the way your bike rides, it’s an awesome bike.
You don’t need to spend a million dollars to have a great bike, but if you do spend a million dollars and know what you want you’ll probably also have a great bike.
Yes, you can tour on your bike – whatever it is.
Yes, you can race on your bike – whatever it is.
Yes, you can commute on your bike – whatever it is.
26” wheels or 29” or 650b or 700c or 24” or 20” or whatever – yes, that wheel size is rad and you’ll probably get where you’re going.
Disc brakes, cantis, v-brakes, and road calipers all do a great job of stopping a bike when they’re working and adjusted.
No paint job makes everyone happy.
Yes, you can put a rack on that. Get some p-clamps if there are no mounts.
Steel is a great material for making bike frames - so is aluminum, carbon fiber, and titanium.
You can have your saddle at whatever angle makes you happy…"

"718 Cyclery is founded on the principle that we are practitioners of 100+ year old technology, not the guardians of it. Nothing that we do isn't so proprietary or secret that a visitor cant peek over our shoulder or ask a question. Our shop is a place where arrogance and attitude have no place. Approaching us with a question shouldn't be as if approaching an altar occupied by the high and mighty. We work with metal and rubber, and will gladly explain our process to you. We are most proud of our integrity and reputation"

Creating ‘The Most Bicycle Friendly City in America’ ... In Southern California - Commute - The Atlantic Cities
january 2012 by robertogreco
"My tour guide says it’s a natural fit. “Perfect weather, perfect topography and perfect proximity to a major metropolitan,” says Charlie Gandy, a nationally recognized bicycle consultant who was hired by the Long Beach city council for a two-year stint as a mobility coordinator to help Long Beach embrace its inherent bikeability. At the time of his hiring, the city had set put together about $12 million for bicycle planning and infrastructure, combining funds from the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Caltrans, and grants from the state and federal governments. With this money in hand, the leadership in Long Beach wanted to do something big."

WikiLane – How Citizens Built their own Bicycle Network | This Big City
november 2011 by robertogreco
"To promote that campaign and pressure legislators into action, several cycling and pedestrian organizations decided to paint their own bike lane in front of Congress on October 20th. This was our way of showing how little money and time is required to create quality infrastructure. We wanted to show that governments just need the will to promote non-motorized transport. However, that bike lane was efficiently erased just two days after it was painted, and no city official claimed responsibility."

Fixed gear habitats

"If you don’t have the luxury of a garage, finding adequate bike storage can be a bit of a challenge. Over the years my bikes have been moved from one location to another more often than displaced refugees. Some people give their bikes pride of place in their living rooms, while others tuck them away out of sight. This new project called SPIN by photographer Ben Roberts, showcases some of London’s unique fixed gear bikes in their own habitats."

Copenhagen's novel problem: too many cyclists | Amelia Hill | Environment | guardian.co.uk
september 2011 by robertogreco
"Can there be too many bikes in a city for safety? It's not a question usually asked: the received wisdom, supported by research and backed by campaigning groups, is that the more cyclists there are, the safer the roads become for everyone.<br />
<br />
But in Copenhagen – one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world in which 36% of its inhabitants cycle to work or school, and which has committed to increasing that figure to 50% by 2015 – there are controversial voices coming from unexpected places.<br />
<br />
According to the Danish Cyclists' Federation and Wonderful Copenhagen, the official tourism organisation for Denmark, the sheer success of the drive to get more locals and tourists on bikes is creating a dangerous, intimidating and unpleasant climate for cyclists in the city."

The Dutch Way - Bicycles and Fresh Bread - NYTimes.com [via: http://bobulate.com/post/9061090478/swivel-shifts ]
august 2011 by robertogreco
"Dutch drivers are taught that when you are about to get out of the car, you reach for the door handle with your right hand — bringing your arm across your body to the door. This forces a driver to swivel shoulders & head, so that before opening the door you can see if there is a bike coming from behind…<br />
<br />
It’s true that public policy reinforces the egalitarianism…But the egalitarianism — or maybe better said a preference for simplicity — is also rooted in the culture. A 17th-century French naval commander was shocked to see a Dutch captain sweeping out his own quarters…<br />
<br />
But while many Americans see their cars as an extension of their individual freedom, to some of us owning a car is a burden, and in a city a double burden. I find the recrafting of the city in order to lessen — or eliminate — the need for cars to be not just grudgingly acceptable, but, yes, an expansion of my individual freedom…Go, social-planning technocrats! If only America’s cities could be so free."

Carmageddon #flightvsbike challenge: How a team of cyclists beat a Jet Blue flight from Burbank to Long Beach. - By Tom Vanderbilt - Slate Magazine
july 2011 by robertogreco
"But the moment of folly seemed to provide an aperture for new thinking. In the face of this fanciful idea (a traffic-busting flight!) it became possible to demonstrate that cycling, often taken as a non-serious or marginal or even annoying (to some drivers) form of transportation in the United States, could seem eminently reasonable: not only the cheapest form of transportation, not merely the one with the smallest carbon footprint, not only the one most beneficial to the health of its user, but the fastest.…<br />
<br />
But the race today wasn't only about the cyclists. Gary Kavanagh*, who had reacted enthusiastically to my initial daydreaming about a "Tour de Carmageddon," was the day's dark horse, revealing the secret efficacy—and perhaps, for some remote Twitter spectators, the existence—of Los Angeles' oft-derided subway system. "Rasmus Gjesing founded Cykelmageren in 1994 by opening a shop in Copenhagen. After a 6 months period of time doing only reparations on bikes with a mainstream look and in bad quality, he got inspired and began building and selling bikes in own design. He wished to break new ground by creating a unique product that was made to last and through out the history of the company this has been the basic idea of the concept. The demand for handmade bikes made expand naturally needed. From thereon the company developed into being a team of innovative quality- enthusiasts, all taking turns building the bikes at the workshop in the north of the city. Proposed: A Critical Mass for bicyclists who follow the law - SignOnSanDiego.com
july 2011 by robertogreco
"This is a bicycle protest to show San Diego that bikes can share the roads and have the same right to be on the road. This is NOT Critical Mass, this is NOT a race, we will ride in a group and stay together by communicating with each other. Be ready to signal when you turn, stop at red lights to regroup and be polite. If we do stop traffic please wave in gratitude that they are being patient, if close enough say “Thank You” Let’s show SD that there are bikes out there that want respect and can dish it out. Europe Stifles Drivers in Favor of Mass Transit and Walking - NYTimes.com
june 2011 by robertogreco
"While American cities are synchronizing green lights to improve traffic flow and offering apps to help drivers find parking, many European cities are doing the opposite: creating environments openly hostile to cars. The methods vary, but the mission is clear — to make car use expensive and just plain miserable enough to tilt drivers toward more environmentally friendly modes of transportation."<br />
<br />
"“In the United States, there has been much more of a tendency to adapt cities to accommodate driving,” said Peder Jensen, head of the Energy and Transport Group at the European Environment Agency. “Here there has been more movement to make cities more livable for people, to get cities relatively free of cars.”"

The Real Reason Why Bicycles are the Key to Better Cities | Sustainable Cities Collective
may 2011 by robertogreco
"The most vital element for the future of our cities is that the bicycle is an instrument of experiential understanding.<br />
<br />
On a bicycle, citizens experience their city with deep intimacy, often for the first time. For a regular motorist to take that two or three mile trip by bicycle instead is to decimate an enormous wall between them and their communities.<br />
In a car, the world is reduced to mere equation; “What is the fastest route from A to B?” one will ask as they start their engine. This invariably leads to a cascade of freeway concrete flying by at incomprehensible speeds. Their environment, the neighborhoods that compose their communities, the beauty of architecture, the immense societal problems in distressed areas, the faces of neighbors… all of this becomes a conceptually abstract blur from the driver’s seat…"

Southern Cone Travel: In Honor of Gabriela; Chile Criminalizes Cycling?
april 2011 by robertogreco
"One of the most preposterous proposals I’ve ever heard has just come out of the Chilean Congress: a law to ban bicycles except on designated bicycle lanes. The details aren’t yet clear but, on the face of it, it would appear to criminalize non-motorized two-wheel transportation even on roads like Aisén’s Carretera Austral, which has very little traffic on any kind. Bicycle touring might become illegal, even through the scenic southern lakes region, and companies such as Santiago’s La Bicicleta Verde, which offers bicycle tours of the city, would have to close down unless, of course, authorities create sufficient bicycle lanes to accommodate the capital’s roughly 600,000 active cyclists. At present, there are 250 km of bike paths for a city of six million residents…"

The Bucky-Gandhi Design Institution › The Tribike
april 2011 by robertogreco
"The Tribike is an attempt to create a “hexayurt for transport” – something minimally functional that can be made with common parts. The core idea is to use a tetrahedron as the basic form – the most minimal shape for enclosing space, and one of the strongest. Steel tube would be an obvious fabrication choice. A wheel is added at each corner.<br />
<br />
Inside of the tetrahedron, a seat is suspended. It hangs inside of the frame, rather than being directly joined to it. For strength, the seat has multi-point attachments to the corners of the frame so that it cannot rotate in space or shift forwards or backwards. However, if the frame sustains a shock, flexibility in the steel frame and in the seat cables will cushion the impact. Clearly a seatbelt is required for riding in the tribike!"

The Ride Journal
april 2011 by robertogreco
"The fact that you’ve made it here shows that you love bikes and are looking for something different to the other magazines and journals out there. That’s good because that’s what The Ride has been created to be.<br />
Born, as all good things are, out of a conversation over Mexican food and Pacifico beers, The Ride is an all encompassing read. We know that most people who share our obsession with bikes don’t want to be pigeon-holed as roadies, freeriders, track racers, BMXers, XC riders or even commuters. They are just riders. So we wanted to create something for them, and also for us. Something that crosses both cycling and international borders.<br />
The idea was to create a journal of personal stories. Bikes have changed people’s lives in so many ways and we wanted to gather a small selection of these tales. We didn’t want to give reviews or race reports, we wanted to get under the skin and expose the passion that flows through riders veins."

april 2011 by robertogreco
"Earlier this month, advocates of alternative transportation cheered as the City of Los Angeles approved a long-awaited bicycle master plan. With more than 1,600 miles of proposed bikeways, the plan envisions a future in which the bicycle is an integral part of urban transportation.<br />
<br />
It also represents an embrace of the city's past and an era when bicycle paths rather than freeways or rail lines connected the Southland's communities. That era, as well as the succeeding years when cycling has competed with other modes of transportation, comes alive through archived images from Southern California's libraries, museums, and other cultural institutions."

LADOT Bike Blog
march 2011 by robertogreco
"ADOT Bike Blog is run by an assistant coordinator for the LADOT Bike Program named Christopher Kidd. He is a graduate student at USC, currently pursuing a masters degree in Urban Planning. He is in the office on Mondays and Fridays only, though content is published throughout the week. Christopher goes by the handle “ladotbikeblog”. He is assisted by interns Derek Levoit (ladotbikeinternI) and JoJo Pewsawang (sbpewsaw). Bike Coordinator Nate Baird also contributes to the blog under the handle “bicyclingnate”.<br />
LADOT Bike Blog’s purpose is to give you, the reader, a closer look into the operations, motivations, rationale, and people of the LADOT Bike Program. We also hope to open and maintain dialogue with the bicycle community over how to make LA a great place to ride a bike.<br />
Los Angeles is a great place to bike. It has a rich and vibrant bicycle culture, both outside and online. We hope to add to that."

ConferenceBike - Eric Staller ["A circular bike for 7 people! You're joking"]
march 2011 by robertogreco
"It's no joke: the ConferenceBike is a revolutionary way to bring people together. The ConferenceBike is pedaled by 7 riders sitting in a circle. One person steers while the other 6 pedal (or not) as the bike moves effortlessly along. More than 250 ConferenceBikes are now being enjoyed by a wide variety of groups in 14 countries. It is a tour bike in Berlin, Baltimore and Minneapolis; a tool for corporate team-building in Amsterdam and San Diego, a way for blind people to bike in Dublin and Florida. They have been used for fund-raising events and biking advocacy groups worldwide. ConferenceBikes are being used to transport employees on the Google campus in California; and as ice-breakers on university campuses in New York. Every group you can think of can use a ‘CoBi’ as a TOOL and a SYMBOL for bringing people together."

"taught landscape history courses as adjunct professor at Harvard's GSD as well as at the College of Environmental Design & the Department of Geography at the UC Berkeley. He finished teaching in the late 1970s & then went on to give lectures especially those pertaining to urban issues. Jackson states that “We are not spectators; all human landscape is not a work of art.” He felt strongly that the purpose of landscape is to provide a place for living and working and leisure."<br />

CITYterm: Admission » Admitted Students » Outside Lies Magic
february 2011 by robertogreco
"Get out now. Not just outside, but beyond the trap of the programmed electronic age so gently closing around so many people at the end of our century. Go outside, move deliberately, then relax, slow down, look around. Do not jog. Do not run. Forget about blood pressure and arthritis, cardiovascular rejuvenation and weight reduction. Instead pay attention to everything that abuts the rural road, the city street, the suburban boulevard. Walk. Stroll. Saunter. Ride a bike, and coast along a lot. Explore.<br />
<br />
Abandon, even momentarily, the sleek modern technology that consumes so much time and money now, and seek out the resting place of a technology almost forgotten. Go outside and walk a bit, long enough to forget programming, long enough to take in and record new surroundings.<br />

Flex the mind, a little at first, then a lot. Savor something special. Enjoy the best-kept secret around--the ordinary, everyday landscape that rewards any explorer, that touches any explorer with magic."

Car Capacity Is Not Sacred | PubliCola - Seattle's News Elixir [via: http://bettyann.tumblr.com/post/1102798385]
september 2010 by robertogreco
"The crucial point is that car infrastructure not only encourages driving, it also sabotages mobility by any other means. It’s a vicious cycle: roads beget sprawl begets car dependence begets roads, and so on. And the result is an ever-expanding built environment in which walking, biking, and transit are not viable options.<br />
<br />
The only way to break the vicious cycle is to invest our limited transportation dollars in infrastructure that will help make walking, biking, and transit more attractive than driving. And here’s where we need to start being honest with ourselves: If we are serious about creating a city in which significant numbers of trips are made by modes other than cars, then we will have to accept that driving will become less convenient than it is today."

Full-Sized Bicycle Folds Flat, Nearly Disappears: The ThinBike (Slideshow) : TreeHugger [via: http://bicycledesign.net/2010/08/led-tires-smart-bikes-and-a-competition/]
august 2010 by robertogreco
"GH: The genesis of this project was to create a really thin bike. I noticed that bikes are awkward due to their wide handlebars and pedals. I figured that if you could have a system whereby you could fold the bars and pedals then you'd have a much more storable, luggable bike and therefore could more easily incorporate it into a small apartment lifestyle. I also knew that I wanted a carbon belt drive hence the Schindelhauer choice." Shareable: Can We Design Cities for Happiness?
august 2010 by robertogreco
"Happiness itself is a commons to which everyone should have equal access.
That’s the view of Enrique Peñalosa, who is not a starry-eyed idealist given to abstract theorizing. He’s actually a politician, who served as mayor of Bogotá, Colombia, for three years, and now travels the world spreading a message about how to improve quality-of-life for everyone living in today’s cities.
Peñalosa’s ideas stand as a beacon of hope for cities of the developing world, which even with their poverty and immense problems will absorb much of the world’s population growth over the next half-century. Based on his experiences in Bogotá, Peñalosa believes it’s a mistake to give up on these cities as good places to live."

Cycle helmets - an overview
august 2010 by robertogreco
"Cycle helmets provide best protection in situations involving simple, low-speed falls with no other party involved...some doctors have expressed concern that cycle helmets might make some injuries worse by converting direct forces into rotational ones...effect of enforced helmet laws: less cycling & no effect on proportion of head injuries...effect of unenforced helmet laws: diminished respect for laws generally...In some jurisdictions, helmet laws have been enacted which are rarely enforced...often have less impact on either cycle or helmet use than enforced laws. There is no evidence they have resulted in a lower risk of head injury...unenforced laws can erode public respect for rule of law generally, & traffic laws in particular, especially amongst young people at whom most helmet laws are targeted...has been shown that safety of cycling is closely associated with # of people who cycle. Any decline in cycle use leads to increased risk for those who continue to cycle."

Child Obesity and Biking: A Graphic Link » INFRASTRUCTURIST
june 2010 by robertogreco
"Rarely does a graphic appear to depict a correlation between a country’s tendency toward biking and its obesity levels as clearly as this one, which was created by Sustrans, a nonprofit in the U.K. that supports sustainable transportation. The group has assembled a wide variety of statistics and figures about physical activity (or inactivity, as the case may be) and the deleterious health effects in Great Britain, and draws an effective comparison with other Western European nations. Other graphs have illustrated the link between the amount of walking and bike commuting a country’s population does and its obesity levels. And while this graph could benefit from the addition of a few more countries, it does indicate a correlation between overweight children and a Western European society’s propensity for biking."

Portland and “elite cities”: The new model | The Economist
april 2010 by robertogreco
"That is not to belittle Portland’s vision. It is a sophisticated and forward-looking place. Which other city can boast that its main attraction is a bustling independent book store (Powell’s) and that medical students can go from one part of their campus to another by gondola, taking their bikes with them? Other cities will see much to emulate. Minneapolis, for example, this month displaced Portland as Bicycling magazine’s most bike-friendly city (“they got extra points for biking in the snow,” grumble Mr Adams’s staff). Adam Davis of Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall, a Portland polling firm, says that Oregonians like to consider themselves leaders but also exceptions. They are likely to remain both."

The End of the Automobile Era? | Planetizen
april 2010 by robertogreco
"On a recent Thursday in February, two disparate incidents in cities on opposite coasts may have signaled the end of the hundred-year ascendancy of automobiles in American life. In Portland, Oregon, the city council voted 5-0 to accept a new bike plan with the ambitious goal of increasing the percentage of people riding bikes from 6% (the highest of any big city in the country) to 25%. Three thousand miles away, on the opposite coast, the New York City Department of Transportation announced that they would make permanent the closing of Broadway to vehicle traffic."

Velo Cult Reconstructs the Bike Shop as a Welcoming Community Space | Sheepless.org

Immediately he came across a dilapidated shell of a building in the middle of major renovations and had a vision of the bike shop he had always wanted to be a part of. High ceilings would allow bikes to climb the walls and hang overhead, a wide open shop floor could showcase unique bikes or be cleared for parties and movie screenings, and a loading dock in place of a street-facing wall literally opened the space out onto the street in Southern California’s year-round ideal weather...What he has, instead, is an entirely new community-oriented business, and seems to be having a great time figuring out each new direction." [Love this place.]

february 2010 by robertogreco
"In its first day alone, this map got over 600 views and nearly 30 intersections were mapped where bicyclists dread to ride. This outpouring of info has been invaluable.

L.A. activists float idea of ‘freeway’ system for bikes | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times
february 2010 by robertogreco
"While Los Angeles city officials and hired consultants tinker with the draft of a mammoth bike plan, vocal critics in the cycling community complain it does not include enough new bike lanes and presents a mishmash of paths and routes that are unintelligible to the average cyclist.

Worldbike :: Mobility for Good
january 2010 by robertogreco
"Worldbike designs and distributes low-cost bicycles for programs that increase economic opportunity, improve health outcomes and boost enrollment and gender equity in secondary school among the rural poor. Our bikes withstand large loads, rough terrain and inclement weather and are configured to be not only affordable, but also maintained and repaired locally. Through partnership with international and local agencies, private companies, foundations and NGOs, Worldbike helps arrange microcredit financing for bike purchases and supplement sales with support from funders and private donors." ... "The same cargo bike we deliver to rural Africa also turns heads on the streets of Seattle, so the 2010 CARGO BIKE for the US market is being configured as we tweet."

Copenhagenize.com - The Copenhagen Bike Culture Blog: Holding On to Cyclists in Copenhagen
january 2010 by robertogreco
"Pling. All of sudden this little bicycle-friendly detail showed up on the urban landscape in Copenhagen one day. I'm quite sure that very few people have noticed it, except for the people who roll up next to it. Which is the point, really.
