Episode 253: Nils Norman : Bad at Sports
7 weeks ago by robertogreco
"Norman founded an experimental space called Poster Studio on Charing Cross Road, London. This space was a collaborative effort with Merlin Carpenter and Dan Mitchell. In 1998 in New York he set up Parasite, together with the artist Andrea Fraser, a collaborative artist led initiative that developed an archive for site-specific projects.
Norman now lives and works in London Copenhagen. He exhibits internationally in commercial galleries, museum, and in public and alternative spaces. He writes articles, designs book covers and posters, collaborates with other artists, teaches and lectures in European and the US. Norman completed a major design project: an 80m pedestrian bridge and two islands for Roskilde Commune in Denmark in 2005 and is now working together with Nicholas Hare Architects on a school playground project for the new Golden Lane Campus, East London. He has recently finished an artist residency at the University of Chicago, Chicago, USA."

"Coveting possessions is unhealthy. Here's how I look at it:
All of the computers on Ebay are mine. In fact, everything on Ebay is already mine. All of those things are just in long term storage that I pay nothing for. Storage is free.
When I want to take something out of storage, I just pay the for the storage costs for that particular thing up to that point, plus a nominal shipping fee, and my things are delivered to me so I can use them. When I am done with them, I return them to storage via Craigslist or Ebay, and I am given a fee as compensation for freeing up the storage facilities resources.
This is also the case with all of my stuff that Amazon and Walmart are holding for me. I have antiques, priceless art, cars, estates, and jewels beyond the dreams of avarice.
The world is my museum, displaying my collections on loan. The James Savages of the world are merely curators."

Will Self: Walking is political | Books | The Guardian

"A century ago, 90% of Londoners' journeys under six miles were made on foot. Now we are alienated from the physical reality of our cities. Will Self on the importance of walking in the fight against corporate control"
"Borges's animals and beggars are those who still seek the disciplines of physical geography – we understand that to walk the city and its environs is, in a very powerful sense, to use it. The contemporary flâneur is by nature and inclination a democratising force who seeks equality of access, freedom of movement and the dissolution of corporate and state control."

"Undoubtedly libraries are a good thing. The access and training that we provide for technology isn't offered by any other public service (largely because public services are rapidly becoming a dirty word in this gilded age of decadence and austerity), and without our services it wouldn't be the end of the world, but it would be a significant dimming.
If you can take yourself out of your first world techie social media smart-shoes for a second then imagine this… [lengthy case study]
So that little melodrama right there is every minute of every day at the public library…The digital divide isn't just access, but also ability, and quality of information, , and the common dignity of having equity of participation in our increasingly digital culture."

"Segments of society that had been seen as politically apathetic only a few years ago, particularly youth, have taken an unusually confrontational stance twrd government & business elite, demanding wholesale changes in education, transportation & energy policy, sometimes violently…
last Friday, Mr. Piñera noted Chileans were witnessing a “new society”…people “feel more empowered & want to feel they are heard.”…rebelling against “excessive inequality” in country…[w/] highest per capita income in Latin America but also…one of most unequal distributions of wealth…
…protests leaders are also pushing for constitutional change to guarantee free, quality education from preschool through high school & a state-financed university system that ensures quality & equal access…
Subtel enforces net neutrality
july 2011 by robertogreco
"Chile’s regulator, Sub-Secretaria de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel) has had a set of amendments to the General Telecommunications Law passed by Congress. The amendment states that internet service providers (ISPs) must not interfere with access to content, applications or services except for protective purposes, such as virus protection. The law prevents ISPs from abusing their control over last mile infrastructure by blocking access to certain content. It also stipulates that ISPs must provide parental controls and be more transparent regarding contracts, and make clear the average and maximum speeds available.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of March 2011 Chile had 1.9 million broadband subscribers, and its household penetration of 39.8% is high for the region."

Think Tank: The 'Veritas' About Harvard - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education
june 2011 by robertogreco
"Harvard spent the money [dramatically increased endowment] on many things. But not a dollar went to increasing the number of undergraduates it chose to bless with a Harvard education…

…the true currency of elite higher education is admissions, not financial aid…

That's because the real priority of elite higher education, as the receding tide of money has exposed, is the greater glory of elite higher education and the administrators and faculty members who work there. That's where all the money went, and that's where, now that some of the money turns out to have never existed in the first place, it needs to come from…

An institution truly dedicated to teaching students has natural limits on how much money it needs. At some point, the land and space and professors suffice.

An institution dedicated to accumulating more money and prestige? There are no limits to those needs. They can never be satisfied."

Open Learning Exchange
june 2011 by robertogreco
"Open Learning Exchange (OLE) is committed to universal access to basic education by 2015.

Over one billion school-aged children in more than one hundred countries lack access to even the most essential learning opportunities. Enabling them to acquire at least a basic education is not charity – it is a universal right. Every child is entitled to an opportunity to develop an intellectually and economically strong life consistent with their abilities. This ultimately benefits all of us.
And it is now possible as never before. The global reach of the Internet, low-cost laptops and other information technologies, combined with a greater awareness of the importance of universal basic education, make it possible for this to be achieved by the UN Millennium Goal of 2015.
What Really Keeps Poor People Poor | JonBischke.com
may 2011 by robertogreco
"Poverty is not deprivation. It is isolation. When the high school senior from the inner city doesn’t get into Harvard or Yale, she’s being isolated from the networks that could allow to reach the highest rungs of society. In all fairness, many people from impoverished communities have been able to access these networks in recent decades and it has lead to some of the greatest success stories of our time. [examples]…

We live in an age where with a solid Internet connection and someone to guide you through the process of self-education (admittedly something many people don’t have) you can learn just about anything. Certainly enough to qualify for some of society’s highest-paid positions. But unfortunately that’s not enough…

How do we instill in our less privileged youth an attitude and aptitude for rising up the ranks and meeting the people they need to meet Lois Weisberg-style, regardless of what university they happen to get into?"

"We believe Internet access is a tool that allows people to help themselves—a tool so vital that it should be considered a universal human right. Imagine your digital life disconnected. W/out access to the 100 million man-hours that have been put into Wikipedia, how much do you actually know? W/out your contacts online social networks how much can you accomplish? W/out access to the news, weather, your bank account—how in charge of your life are you?
The Internet has transformed what it means to be human—we are now more connected to one another than ever before. Yet, over 5 billion people do not have access to this incredible invention, do not have a voice in global dialog, or opportunity to share ideas & learn from Internet's ever-expanding knowledge pool.
Humans Are The Routers
february 2011 by robertogreco
"Free communications is an essential human right. The 21st Century will be defined by the idea that no Government, no power shall ever block or filter the right of all men and women to communicate together again. It is my dream that within my lifetime that dictatorship shall be banished from this planet and unfiltered and true democracy shall flourish everywhere. It is time that our Faustian bargains with brutal dictators for short-term concerns end and a new covenant directly made with citizens everywhere seeking freedom will take its place. OpenMesh is a first step to help create a world where such a covenant can take hold in a world where brave people armed with new electronic tools can never be blocked or silenced ever again."

On why, or the magic of coffee - Bobulate
january 2011 by robertogreco
"A question of why

Why is a six-year old so curious? Partly practical. Because she is not tall enough to know all the answers, she must ask good questions. To see over the edge of the cup would be to see the answer. As this isn’t possible, observation and questioning are her only tool.

Access less

Access can take away why. More practical is less practical sometimes, and being tall and connected and well-read and traveled can dull the edges of a good question. If questions aren’t coming easily, make yourself less so. Take something away. Give something away. Be less tall. Remove the excess, and you might find what remains is a good question.
Libraries set you free! (2011) | Hari Kunzru
january 2011 by robertogreco
"I remember my first library card…excitement of the trips to the library, of choosing the four books I’d take back home. The habit of exploration has stayed with me. It was founded on the confidence that all those books on all those shelves belonged to me, were mine for the taking. If I was interested enough in any object in this large room, the librarian would stamp it and I would carry it out. That sense of entitlement was the foundation of everything I’ve done since in my life. I felt knowledge belonged to me & have carried on exploring libraries ever since…It’s a long time since I’ve borrowed a book from a local library. But I know that a public library is not the same as a book shop. It’s also not the same as the internet. The child choosing a book that, for a short time, will belong to him, is learning that knowledge is his, if he wants it. He’s learning that it’s a right. Libraries set people free. They’re not a luxury. They’re not a relic. We must fight to save them."

Frank Chimero - Your Shit, My Stuff, Goldilocks, and Making the Bed You Sleep In
january 2011 by robertogreco
"There’s no name for this way of thinking, but if I had to steal a term, I’d use Merlin Mann’s Appropriatism. It’s not minimalism, it’s not maximalist, it’s just-right-ism. Goldilocks was on to something. The idea sits somewhere in the middle, exactly at the crux of whatever works the best with the least amount. The core precept of all of it is this:
“Add things until it starts sucking, take things away until it stops getting better.”
We’re looking for that sweet spot, the thing that fits just right, plus or minus zero. With that said, this isn’t a zen, simple living blog post. By being an apostle for nothingness, we lose touch with reality. Philosophy is worthless if it is not practical. My intent is to be helpful and useful, not dogmatic. Your mileage may vary, if only because of differing needs."

Your mileage may vary, if only because of differing needs."

What Happened to “Hole-in-the-Wall”? « Papyrus News
july 2010 by robertogreco
"It turns out that the two Hole-in-the-Wall sites that she visited both stand in ruins, one closed down within a few months of its opening due to vandalism, the other surviving until it became inactive. According to the article, while the broader Hole-in-the-Wall project still exists, it has evolved from its earlier approach of eschewing relationship with community organizations, schools, and adult mentors, and has now “started to focus more on the building of ties with the school, particularly in regard to using the teachers or others in the local communities as mediators in learning.” This is a welcome change and reflects the important realization that mentorship and institutional support are important if children are to learn effectively with technology."

Hope-in-the-Wall? A digital promise for free learning. Payal Arora. 2010; British Journal of Educational Technology - Wiley InterScience
july 2010 by robertogreco
"It is posited that this approach, which is being used in India, Cambodia and several countries in Africa, can pave the way for a new education paradigm and be the key to providing literacy and basic education and bridging the digital divide in remote and disadvantaged regions. This paper seeks to establish why two such open access, self-directed and collaborative learning systems failed to take root in the Central Himalaya communities of Almora and Hawalbagh. The purpose of this study is not to deny the achievements and potential of such an approach in other settings, but to examine the tenets and sustainability of such initiatives. It is argued that there is a need to distinguish between Hole-in-the-Wall as an idea and as an institution and to reflect on the key suppositions on how unsupervised access, informal, public, self-guided and collaborative work can help in children's learning."

june 2010 by robertogreco
"The era of the Web browser’s dominance is coming to a close. And the Internet’s founding ideology—that information wants to be free, and that attempts to constrain it are not only hopeless but immoral— suddenly seems naive and stale in the new age of apps, smart phones, and pricing plans. What will this mean for the future of the media—and of the Web itself?"

"The Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Plan, announced last week, is aimed at providing nearly universal, affordable broadband service by 2020. And while it takes many admirable steps — including very important efforts toward opening space in the broadcast spectrum — it does not address the source of the access problem: without a major policy shift to increase competition, broadband service in the United States will continue to lag far behind the rest of the developed world."

march 2010 by robertogreco
"Academia should be conducted in such a way as to benefit society. This means (among other things) that the processes and products of publicly-funded academics' activities should, by default, be public (i.e., accessible and freely usable). It also means that academics should seek to use and promote tools (such as software) and materials (such as textbooks) which enable students emerging academics to utilise and foster public knowledge. The evolution towards open academia is a cultural challenge because closedness is the norm."

Infrastructure Spending Will Not Revive the Economy - WSJ.com
december 2009 by robertogreco
"Forget old-fashioned infrastructure. Here are six government projects to foster a lasting economic recovery...Climb poles for wireless...Dig fiber ditches...Sequence proteins...Lighten backpacks [digitize textbooks]...Scan medical records...Require TOU meters...The technology is starting to roll out (with some stimulus money) in the form of Time of Use (TOU) meters replacing those ugly glass bulbs with spinning disks. Coupled with wireless in-house devices that show appliance electrical usage in real time and clever software at utilities, I'd bet peak usage would drop 30% and educate a million workers on the workings of the future smart electric grid. Beats subsidies for caulking windows."

Streams of Content, Limited Attention: The Flow of Information through Social Media ~ Stephen's Web ~ by Stephen Downes
november 2009 by robertogreco
""For the longest time," writes danah boyd, "we have focused on sites of information as a destination, of accessing information as a process, of producing information as a task. What happens when all of this changes? While things are certainly clunky at best, this is the promise land of the technologies we're creating... This metaphor is powerful. The idea is that you're living inside the stream: adding to it, consuming it, redirecting it. The stream metaphor is about reaching flow. It's also about restructuring the ways in which information flows in modern society."

SpeEdChange: Why "Standards-Based" and "Accountability" are dirty words [see also comment thread]
july 2009 by robertogreco
"every time we speak of "age appropriate goals," "grade level expectations," & "academic standards" we force students into 2-tier system...create disability & rob people of their human right to develop in way that serves them best... "evidence based practice" which is code for treating education the way a steel mill treats iron ore...real inclusion means abandoning our notions of "standards," "accountability," "evidence."...many of our basic conceptions of what schools look like...embracing the individual learner and not the group." ... ""that's not the "hidden curriculum" of schools, it is "the curriculum."...probably why America's most creative businesses are usually run by those who - at one point or another - found school either intolerable or irrelevant."

Comment by Sue K.: "This is where I get stuck: “But the only way that parents are going to DEMAND access is if they see that not simply as a way for kids to get a computer but to see connections online as a way to a better future, a way to help their kids become more educated, better learners than by books and paper alone.” because for many parents the status quo in schools gives their kids the future [they] believe the kids need & gives them access to the prestigious colleges parents see as path to a promising future. I have not seen evidence that the parents will demand anything that might level the playing field for any others or for something different than a traditional post-secondary education. Parents are demanding access to AP courses & high grades &...winning athletic teams for their kids. So, the question to me is - how do we show them a different future for their kids? There just does not seem to be a sense of urgency for school boards, school district leaders or parents..."
