docerator automatically creates Mac OS X document icons given an application icon and one or several file extensions. It is a tool for application authors that don't have the time or the money to create a docicon, but already have an application icon. It's also useful if you need to create many document icons.

It’s important to point out that while the ePub format works on most ebook readers (including Apple’s iBook reader) and is opensource, it is not the format used by Amazon’s Kindle reader (which uses the MOBI format). There are software tools, like Calibre, available to convert from ePub to MOBI. (I may do a post in the future going over these conversion tools and options.)

To learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.

Two photographers made photos from the same event:
- P1: old camera with small memory cards -> three folders, each with imagenames "DSC00001 - DSC00xxx".
- P2: modern camera -> one folder with imagenames "P6150001 - P6170xxx".
Both camera-dates were not synchronized, so the images are in the wrong order when imported into iPhoto, for example.

Since Media Converter uses ffmpeg a lot of file formats are supported. Convert avi, wmv, mkv, rm, mov and more to other formats.

Some files aren't supported by ffmpeg, but can be decoded with QuickTime®. Media Converter uses movtowav and movtoy4m to decode them.

MsgFiler quickly files email messages into mailboxes in Apple Mail. Open MsgFiler, type a few characters, and MsgFiler will display a list of mailboxes. Hit return and your emails will be filed away. Navigate, select, move and copy messages without ever lifting your hands off the keyboard.

PropEdit is Mac OS X application which allows you to easily manage the permissions of your computer's files.
It allows you to change the owner, group, permissions and specific system flags for any file or directory on your hard disk.

These features include the ability to use the “esc” key to close the compose window, type anywhere to tweet, user timeline derepeater, as well as others. So, I experimented. And the good news is that since Snow Leopard came out, with its improvements to the Services menu and Automator support, adding Markdown conversion to the Services menu yourself is an absolute doddle. I took a guess and what I did worked first time.

Zone is an application for Mac, that helps focus on work by doing something we call “zoning in.” It means that you forget about the whole world for a while and just work.

There’s Pomodoro technique, but Zone never interrupts you when you’re zoned in and when you’re taking a break it doesn’t force you to get back to work like you were a child.

CleanHaven is a program designed to make the cleaning of text much easier. The cleaned text can be reset as the main text with additional cleaning performed. Once finished the cleaned text is available from the global cleaned text window. You may want CleanHaven to make changes to thousands of lines of contact details before importing into CRMHaven. For example you can turn all company names to Sentence Case, all UK postcodes to Uppercase or remove any trailing spaces, tabs or punctuation. Copy a column of data from Excel, clean it, then paste it back into Excel.

Once active, fslogger will wait for change notifications to arrive from the file system layer in the kernel. The various file system operations that are communicated to fslogger (and other subscribers such as Spotlight, specifically the metadata server) include:

File creation
Folder creation
File or folder deletion
Changes to the stat structure (for example, a permission change)
Renaming of a file or a folder
Content modification
Content exchange between two files
Finder information changes
Change of ownership

CoRD is a Mac OS X remote desktop client for Microsoft Windows computers using the RDP protocol. It's easy to use, fast, and free for anyone to use or modify.

I Googled around a bit and found “Quality reduced file size in Mac OS X Preview from early 2006. There I discovered that anyone can create their own Quartz filters, which was the key I needed. Thus armed with knowledge, I set about creating a filter that struck, in my estimation, a reasonable balance between image quality and file size reduction. And I think I’ve found it. That 175MB PDF gets taken down to 34MB with what I created.
