Star Wars art sideblog of cruzmylene
This is a common refrain among the new generation of Star Wars actors: that Fisher was the one who taught them how to deal. Boyega recalled that when there was a backlash against his appearance in the first Force Awakens teaser trailer, released in November 2014—the sight of a black man in stormtrooper armor drew ire from racists and doctrinaire Star Wars traditionalists—Fisher counseled him not to take it to heart. “I remember—and forgive me, I’m going to drop the f-bomb, but that’s just Carrie—she said, ‘Ah, boohoo, who fuckin’ cares? You just do you,’ ” he said. “Words like that give you strength. I bore witness in a million ways to her sharing her wisdom with Daisy too.”

rems and ems, and why you probably don’t need them – Hacker Noon
If you have two adjacent bits of text and want the padding between them to be like a space, try 1ch on for size.
If you want your body background color to fill at least one page vertically, try 100vh instead of 100%. But in general if you’re going to use vh, you better test real hard on iOS devices.
Did you know vertical-align can be a percentage? If you find that vertical-align: super or top isn't lining up just the way you want it, don’t go adding something nasty like position: relative and top: -3px. Instead try vertical-align: 30%.
When it comes to flexible layouts, don’t forget about flex-grow and flex-shrink. It might be a bit tricky to wrap your head around them at first, but just like a giant lollipop, they’re worth it.

Our Mermaids Are Different - TV Tropes
Night Gallery featured the episode "Lindemann's Catch", which featured a fishing captain growing captivated by the mermaid he caught. Desperate, he finds a way to give her legs, so she can live on land; the only problem is that she also gets a fish's head and gills as well.

In the scene in The Incredibles where Helen (Elastagirl) is flying the plane, her use of radio protocol is exceptionally accurate for a movie. The terminology used hints that she has had military flight training. In the director’s commentary Brad Bird says that actress Holly Hunter insisted on learning both the lingo and its meaning.

“VFR on top” means she is flying in the regime of Visual Flight Rules ‘on top’ of a cloud cover.
She requests “vectors to the initial”, or directions on how to get to the initial landing approach.
“Angels 10” is her altitude call, ten thousand feet. This is a military term. Civilian flights use the term “flight level”.
“Track east” is her direction of travel.
“Buddy spike(d)” is a US military brevity code meaning “friendly anti-aircraft radar has locked on to me, (please don’t shoot)”.
“Transmitting in the Blind Guard” is a call on the emergency frequency where 2-way communication has not been established.
“Abort” is also a military brevity code, a directive meaning “stop the action/mission/attack”.
god i love when actors/ voice actors are intent on using correct lingo for things like this

its so easy to BS this sort of thing and sometimes it might work but it’s vastly more impressive when they actually use correct terminology
She also uses the handle “India Golf Niner-Niner” or, in the NATO Phonetic Alphabet, IG99.

The Iron Giant (1999), also directed by Brad Bird.

Heart in the Wrong Place - TV Tropes
Anatomically, the human heart is located beneath the lower sternum, with only a very slight tilt to the left. In fiction, it's common to depict it as lying just under the left shoulder, level with the armpit, in a position where the left lung ought to be. The thumping sensation that people feel in the upper-left chest that creates this impression is actually the aortic pulse.
A case of Artistic License – Biology so commonplace as to constitute Reality Is Unrealistic. If a character's heart is in the wrong place because they've hidden it for safekeeping, that's a Soul Jar. If a character's heart is in a different place because they aren't human, it's Bizarre Alien Biology. This trope can overlap with CPR (Clean, Pretty, Reliable) when nobody involved does the research beforehand.
Often mistakenly conflated with dextrocardia, a condition where a human's heart tilts towards their right side instead of their left.

What characters die / leave and when? - Final Fantasy IV Answers for DS - GameFAQs
- Unequip Kain right before entering Mist. When he returns, he'll be wearing different gear.
- Unequip Tellah after entering Damcyan Castle, but before examining Anna.
- Unequip Rosa and possibly Rydia before entering Fabul Castle's throne room.
- Unequip Rydia, Yang, and Edward before getting on the boat from Fabul. If you want Edward's Salve and Hide augments, give him two augments. (Not recommended for the first playthrough.)
- Unequip Cecil before walking up to the gravestone-like thing atop Mount Ordeals. Anything still on him when he becomes a paladin is lost forever. Nobody else can use the stuff, but the sword can be thrown and the rest can be sold.
- Unequip Palom and Porom before entering the throne room in Baron Castle. They'll have to fight Cagnazzo without armor, though. Also, if you want Cry, Bluff, and Dualcast, give the twins three augments (one on one of them, two on the other).
- After beating the Magus Sisters, the very next room up in the tower contains Golbez. Unequip Tellah before getting far enough in this room to trigger the cutscene. If you want Last Stand and Fast Talker, give Tellah two augments before he dies. GRAB THE AUGMENTS BEFORE TALKING TO KAIN!
- In the Underworld, unequip Cid before entering the dwarven castle's throne room. Giving him two augments will allow you to obtain Upgrade and Adrenaline later. (Not recommended on your first playthrough.)
- Before entering the cannon room in the Tower of Babil (using Lugae's Key), unequip Yang. If you want Kick and Brace, give him two augments. To actually obtain Yang's augments, you need to go through Sylph Cave, examine Yang, talk to his wife, then go back through and examine Yang again, all prior to recruiting Fusoya on the moon (don't worry, that's still a ways off).
- On your way out of the Sealed Cave (the place with the fourth dark crystal), unequip Kain before you reach the entrance. He's about to run off again.
- Between confronting the four Elemental Archfiends and the Core Node in the Giant of Babil, unequip Fusoya. If you want Omnicasting and Phoenix (which you do, trust me), give two augments to Fusoya.
- Be sure to steal Dark Matter from the final boss (true form)

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - Before I Play
- Never, EVER stop using Mario's basic Jump special, even when Superjump becomes available. Get the accessory that lets you damage spiked enemies with it. Spam it endlessly and repeatedly. NEVER EVER STOP. Every single time you use Jump Mario's base attack power goes up by 0.5. This caps at +127 attack after 254 jumps, which is roughly the amount you'll use if you play through the game without trying to powerlevel.

- If you're having trouble with the endgame or hidden bosses, take the Fertilizer from walking off the right edge of the clouds in Nimbus Land's main town area and the Seed from the shy-away in bean valley to the crazy guy who lives in the back of Rose Town for the best armor in the entire game. Put it on Peach and have her use Group Hug every turn and it becomes literally impossible to die.

The top ten most confusing PlayStation Vita truths | The Vita Lounge
The phrase “Use Wifi in Power Save Mode” is the likely cause of millions of headaches as faithful PlayStation Vita users leave it checked and attempt to download something… getting abysmal transfer speeds over horrid quality connections (that are otherwise fine for use with other gadgets). This is because the phrase itself is ambiguous, and instead of taking it for its true meaning – to enable a low power Wifi connection to save battery at the cost of connection quality – people assume it means enabling Wifi during sleep mode.

To be clear; there isn’t a setting for enabling Wifi during sleep mode (or for disabling it), and unchecking that check box will net you a better Wifi connection in nearly every way (aside from a slightly increased drain on battery life).

Do yourself a favour and uncheck it, your Vita and your sanity will thank you.

suitov: tikkunolamorgtfo:...
Back in the thirteen hundreds, the Dauphiné was a region of France. (Southeast somewhere I think?) The region was named for its lords, who were originally titled ‘Count of Albon’ like normal people. They then took the oddball title of ‘Dauphin’, following a count who was called ‘le Dauphin’ because he had a dolphin on his heraldry.

The title went from ‘Count of Albon‘ to ‘Dolphin of Viennois’ (the Viennois being the area around Vienne, their base), and they named their little state le Dauphiné, ‘the Dolphinate’ and then in the mid-fourteenth century they went broke, and agreed to hand the whole thing over to the king of France. But only if the heirs to the throne took on and preserved the dolphin title, to which they were apparently pretty attached. The term was agreed to, and the heir to the throne of France was ‘le dauphin de Viennois’, and his wife ‘la dauphine’, until 1791.

I swear to God, I’m not kidding. Medieval French noblemen were a trip. History has not recorded the response of the first French crown prince to be informed that he was taking on this weird-ass vanity title in exchange for a big chunk of land.

prokopetz: That thing about how cats think...
That thing about how cats think humans are big kittens is a myth, y’know.

It’s basically born of false assumptions; folks were trying to explain how a naturally solitary animal could form such complex social bonds with humans, and the explanation they settled on is “it’s a displaced parent/child bond”.

The trouble is, cats aren’t naturally solitary. We just assumed they were based on observations of European wildcats - but housecats aren’t descended from European wildcats. They’re descended from African wildcats, which are known to hunt in bonded pairs and family groupings, and that social tendency is even stronger in their domesticated relatives. The natural social unit of the housecat is a colony: a loose affiliation of cats centred around a shared territory held by alliance of dominant females, who raise all of the colony’s kittens communally.

It’s often remarked that dogs understand that humans are different, while cats just think humans are big, clumsy cats, and that’s totally true - but they regard us as adult colonymates, not as kittens, and all of their social behaviour toward us makes a lot more sense through that lens.

The like to cuddle because communal grooming is how cats bond with colonymates - it establishes a shared scent-identity for the colony and helps clean spots that they can’t easily reach on their own.

They bring us dead animals because cats transport surplus kills back to the colony’s shared territory for consumption by pregnant, nursing, or sick colonymates who can’t easily hunt on their own. Indeed, that’s why they kill so much more than they individually need - it’s not for fun, but to generate enough surplus kills to sustain the colony’s non-hunting members.

They’re okay with us messing with their kittens because communal parenting is the norm in a colony setting, and us being colonymates in their minds automatically makes us co-parents.

It’s even why many cats are so much more tolerant toward very small children, as long as those children are related to one of their regular humans: they can tell the difference between human adults and human “kittens”, and your kittens are their kittens.

Basically, you’re going to have a much easier time getting a handle on why your cat does why your cat does if you remember that the natural mode of social organisation for cats is not as isolated solitary hunters, but as a big communal catpile - and for that purpose, you count as a cat.

Lois and Clark / Trivia - TV Tropes
Enforced Method Acting: In this version of the mythos, before Superman shows up, Lex Luthor is shown to be an adrenaline junkie, staring down cobras and punching out sharks. There was only enough money to film one of these scenes, and the snake wrangler evidently ate up the safety budget, so John Shea had to stare down a poisonous snake for real.
According to Shea, another scene had him yelling at the top of his lungs into a phone while waving a cigar around. Some ash fell on his hand and badly scorched it, but he was forced to keep his game face on or else ruin the closeup. When the director called cut, everybody yelled 'great job!' as though they'd witnessed a skilled actor at the height of his powers.

Three adventurers walk into a bar... - Ree’s musings
http://www.gamegrene.com/node/388

This article makes me very proud of my character Ráwen and the GM I play her under.

I don't talk about Ráwen much online. Haven't played her for some time now. That article reminded me of her because she didn't meet her party in a bar. My half-elven thief almost froze to death after fleeing a town where she had been, ah, doing business. A human mage found her and, with the help of his mentor, looked after her health. Around the time she recovered, no less than a god chose and marked the mage as his.

After that happened, my dear Ráwen stayed beside the mage for a couple reasons. She felt obliged to him for saving her life. He was protected by a god opposed to evil creatures that had already attacked her once, and she wanted under that umbrella of safety. He also sometimes got his hands on really good loot and he sent the party after more, magical devices to fight the evil. Heh.

In the climax of the campaign, Ráwen was the only character (besides an NPC romantically attached to him) to follow the mage's plan instead of staying behind to fight a losing a battle. The group had agreed to follow the mage but only she kept that promise. They intended to draw reinforcements. Due to the GM's evil bastard mindgames, the climax went a bit differently than the players' plan. (If you've ever heard me mention Sin, he was the GM. He likes a good mindgame and loves an evil one.)

And that is Ráwen. Well, there's also her vampire lover, the sword left embedded in the side of a tavern, the ally who became gnome jerky, and the pureblood elven ranger who actually liked this rogue halfbreed -- but eh, I should get to supper.

[Unnamed Inn]
Jaina's brow scrunched in confusion until Suitov hit the punchline. "You're terrible," she said, but she grinned and squeezed his hands. "Although that is bad news indeed."

She shook her head, dropping a cascade of red hair over her face. "I want your help in testing the limits of my portal ability. It's easy for me to travel between the Jaded Soul and here, but what if I could make it easy for anybody? Make a portal that didn't close? I could live there but be steps away from you." She did not add, /instead of living on property owned by a man, the way a kept woman would do/. Not aloud.

Her hands had begun to faintly glow from her anxiety. Flustered, she pulled them out of Suitov's and dropped them to her sides, willing them to stop.

"I don't think I have quite the - I don't know, strength? Mojo? - to pull it off, but maybe we could figure something out together. I don't even know where we should start. Hence the favour."

A Chronological Presentation of Fucks I Give. — My sister asked if the events of “The Labyrinth”...
In a time long long ago a sorcerer named Jareth fell in love with a girl named Sarah. Sarah’s father and step-mother would not let her marry Jareth because they wanted her to keep her, as a servant, to care for their other child. In a fit of rage Jareth kidnapped this other child and spirited it away to the fairy world. In this new world Jareth built a palace for his Sarah. He turned the spoiled child into a goblin, and kept it to be a servant.
Many stories of the fairy world tell us that time moves differently there than in our world (Rip Van Winkle for one). In the time it took for Jareth to build his kingdom, which he may have thought was little more than a few years, Sarah grew old and died.
Overcome by grief and addled by a lifetime spent in a strange world filled with monsters, Jareth goes mad. He refuses to believe that he has lost his love. He searches the mortal world from his castle, looking for her.
Sarah is Hebrew name. So, it is common, and has been in use for thousands and thousands of years. It does not take long (for him) to find a dark haired girl named Sarah, who has a younger sibling, and who feels that she is treated unfairly by her step mother. In a fit of rage he kidnaps this other child and spirits it away to the fairy world. Perhaps this new Sarah dies in the quest to find the child, perhaps she wins her sibling back and flees.
Jareth searches the mortal world from his from his castle, looking for her. It does not take long to find a dark haired girl named Sarah…
This is how Jareth becomes the goblin king. Every goblin in the goblin city is a child Jareth has stolen, who was not recovered by a Sarah. (he told the current Sarah that Toby would become a goblin if she did not find him in time)
This is why he builds the maze. The magic bog, the junk yard of useless treasures, all tricks to slow Sarah down. Because if he can only have his Sarah for the time it takes for her to regain the stolen child, he will make it take as long as possible, keep her as long as possible.
This is why there exists in our world a book containing the story. Because it has happened before. So many times. At some point some lucky Sarah must have returned to our world to tell the story.
This is why when the most recent Sarah first meets Hoggle at the start of the labyrinth, and introduces herself; “I’m Sarah”, Hoggle responds “That’s what I figured.”
Because of course she’s Sarah.
They were all Sarah.

Re: authuser vs. passwords
> Anyone have any ideas how to make the PMWiki site have them authenticated
> via AuthUser, but then only make them type in a password to be access
> password protected pages/groups within the site?

As Vince said, leaving the username field blank has the same effect as
just having a password field.

However, if you want to hide the username field for already logged-in
visitors, you can edit the page Site.AuthForm on your wiki for example
by changing the following conditional

(:if enabled EnableAuthUser:)

to

(:if ( enabled EnableAuthUser && !authid ) :)

This means that the "Name:" field won't be shown if the user is
already logged in.

Alternatively, for extra fanciness, you could use something like the
following instead of that whole line:

(:if enabled EnableAuthUser:)$[Name]:
(:if2 authid:){$AuthId}(:else2:)(:input text name=authid:)(:if2end:)\\

Note that this assumes you've got at least version 2.2.0-beta66 for
the nested if functionality.
