Over the years, the value added by the financial section has been somewhere between 12% and 14%. The same time, the share of corporate profits by the financial sector has always been higher than their value added. In the 2000s, they were getting 40% of all corporate profits, and you only get that with huge amounts of leverage, with huge amounts of risk. [...] And the real problem is that they did it again in 2009. In 2008, it went down to 8.5%, but in 2009 it crept back to 30%.
And another thing I should mention is that, and we’ve not begun to deal with this at all, is the no cutbacks in the financial sectors jobs. And we’ve really got to cut all those places down. I realized that the sector has lost more jobs than any other place, but its all been outside of New York City in the smaller banks, regional banks, that are actually doing banking, and the guys at the top have covered themselves, and they haven’t changed at all.

Sinclair had little interest in ethical vegetarianism (he gave up meat for a time to cure nervous dyspepsia). But I know of vegetarians who turned away from meat-eating after reading The Jungle. This has less to do with the transparency of the meat production process and more with how the promiscuous means of novels and other arts, regardless of the goals of any individual work, can give us the knowledge we need: in this case, a sense of what animals are and their place.

We don’t know what it felt like to read before newspapers, before mass media, before printing. We don’t even know what “attention” is; one person’s rapt, deep attention is another person’s dangerous trance, while what looks like constant distraction might also be an ability to synthesize. Pragmatically, for intellectuals to stake a claim on such things as “attention” or “concentration” is an abdication of our best ground: content. There is no valid reason to think that War and Peace teaches deep attention any better than a first-person shooter game. There are plenty of reasons, enduring ones, to think that War and Peace aerates and nourishes our daily lives more fruitfully, and productively, than Call of Duty. Which is to say that staking our claims on a format (the printed book), rather than on specific, lasting artifacts of a bookish culture is a losing proposition.

American culture has killed so much that once gave pleasure to so many that it seems only logical to expect that books will be next. But the cycle of regret, too, is deeply ingrained in American life. After the buffalo were hunted to extinction on the western plains, the people who did it tried to bring them back; along the Northeastern rail lines, developers and architects eye the abandoned and rebuking factories and wonder what to make of them now. The old bones are what we have left, because we’ve surrendered the will and capacity to build newer structures like them. They are our pyramids and cathedrals, and the knowledge they once represented is lost to us, the pain that went into their labor has been distributed elsewhere, although we have not cured the pain of the laborer. To look on them is to know that it did not have to turn out that way.

Nationalism is, for good or ill, at my core. Thus I see the fight for marriage rights not as a fight for a squishy, gauzy "tolerance," but as a fight for gay self-determination. The family is not just a building block of civilizations, but a defense against civilizations which, so often, prove themselves unworthy of the name. Thus gay marriage is, to me, not about relieving homophobes of their burdensome ignorance but about the right of gays to defend themselves against that ignorance.

On the one hand I think the fuss about these rulings in Iowa and Vermont and stuff, is a product of shock that these states with no major cities and therefore, by assumption, with no gay people, could be making these radical moves. Oddly enough, the coasts become the emblematic cities and Iowa becomes this rural place, which is ridiculous also, that Iowa shouldn’t have lots of gay people and/or that a positive vote on gay marriage should only depend on the presence of lots of gay people. I mean, the assumptions just keep building. It must be very irritating to queer people in Iowa, and everybody else in Iowa, too.

It's just that agribusiness realized we could raise chickens for practically nothing, realized they could feed it to us in ways that don't require silverware, don't require a kitchen table. So it's not just the system of raising animals that's changed so much as these diets that have been imposed on us, and imposed on poor people in particular. Other cultures don't eat that way, and we have historically not eaten that way. But the scary thing is they're starting to eat like us. There are more obese people in the world now than starving people.

Many of these efforts will fail; if we’re lucky, some of them will succeed wildly. But they mean that publishing, in general, is going to be a more lively, more disorderly, more wide-open business than it has been in a long time—probably since the paperback revolution of the 1940s and 50s. I am sure it will offer more opportunities to smart, creative young talent, especially because it’s younger people who know more about the tools and culture of the web that is going to be the essential medium for publishers reaching readers. For a lot of big corporations, the coming years may be the worst of times: the pain of transformation may outweigh the gain of reinvention. But for the publishing personnel of the future, it could be the best of times. Especially if you like roller-coasters.

This positive mood actually expanded, as the morning progressed, in a manner I had never before experienced. By one o’clock, my mood had climaxed and I sensed the dizzying heights of complete contentment, a level that appears on no scale designed to measure moods, not even on the poetic thermometer.

Their noise and shouts of “bravo” are not judgments of the esthetic approval of individual actors, but purely lyrical outbursts of their own wellbeing. They are not even conscious of themselves as an audience, but would like to be down with the actors on the street or wherever the scene happens to take place. Since, however, the theatrical distance makes this impossible, they conduct themselves like children who are allowed to watch a commotion in the street only through the window.

He senses how the crowd yearns for him to fail, the same way that it forgives their favourite, the shortstop Derek Jeter, his daily trespasses. Where Rodriguez is pouty, with talent to burn, Jeter is professional and controlled – bankerly virtues that play especially well in the new New York. By playing the two men off each other – Jeter good, A-Rod bad – New York fans perform the psychological work of neutralising the charges, made by the fans of every other team, that the Yankees’ dominance is merely the product of the large sums of money they spend every winter buying the most talented players in the league.

He was also the author of "In Praise of Scribes," the foremost defense of scribal practice, in favor of writing things out and against printing them.

Sendak says he remembered seeing the photo in a newspaper, even though for decades afterward, he couldn’t find any printed evidence that the photo had ever run. Turns out that Charles Lindbergh himself had raised hell after the Daily News ran the picture on the front page, and had it cut from all subsequent editions. Only a handful of people ever saw that picture in the paper, and a 4-year-old Sendak was one.
