Economics focus: Don’t look down | The Economist
Moneyquote: "Instead of opposing redistribution because people expect to make it to the top of the economic ladder, the authors of the new paper argue that people don’t like to be at the bottom. One paradoxical consequence of this “last-place aversion” is that some poor people may be vociferously opposed to the kinds of policies that would actually raise their own income a bit but that might also push those who are poorer than them into comparable or higher positions."

Or why the poor constantly vote for policies that help the rich, rather than themselves.

Disney's Movie Vault: Scarily Creating a Fantasia of Scarcity | Postmodern Times - WSJ.com
Moneyquote: "But perhaps the dreaded vault isn't so much about creating excitement as it is about creating fear. Disney doesn't make it easy to find out what's in the vault and when a given film might finally get paroled. That helps the company to gin up, if not excitement, at least a little anxiety. The old behaviorists found that if a lab rat knew it would get a pellet every time it hit the lever, the rat would take his time, collecting his food only when he wanted it. But if the payoff was randomized and the rat didn't know which hit of the lever would deliver, the poor, anxious lab animal could be counted on to keep up a steady tattoo."
