It meant that you were a protest singer
Tom Ewing looks at the "United Breaks Guitars" protest video not from it's status as a viral hit but through the novel and more useful perspective of a music writer. In short, the medium - country music - is a potent vehicle for "hard-luck stories and straight-talking". The medium is the message and all that.

The Superfan Strategy » The Cynical Musician
A long and detailed attack on Kevin Kelly's "1000 True Fans" theory whereby a musician (or similar) can thrive by cultivating a relatively small cohort of fanatics. It's a fairly easy one to destroy but the process is interesting and useful. (I also like the subheading "What the 'new music experts' don’t tell you".)

The 20 Things You Must Know About Music Online
A couple of years back Andrew Dubber wrote a series of blog posts distilling everything he knew about online music. He turned it into a book and now it's a serious of videos for their forthcoming iTunes U podcasts. RSS and the Greatly Exaggerated Rumors of the Album’s Death « Bandcamp Blog
Interesting observation on Bandcamp of how their artists are using "albums" as buckets into which songs go.
"What exactly constitutes an album is rapidly evolving... Rather than treating albums as immutable collections of tracks, lots of you treat albums as open containers. Containers for song-a-day/week projects, explorations of particular musical styles, or just general works-in-progress."
Reminds me of Flickr photo sets which people either use as one-off collections of photos which will never be added to or themed collections which build over time. Bandcamp have added RSS feeds to their albums, as Flickr have to photo sets. Seems counter-intuitive at first but actually makes perfect sense. Albums are dynamic things.

Outdated music industry deserves no Govt help
Great overview of the current tactics used by the music recording industry to shore up their failing business models which asks the obvious question:
Where's the government help for travel agents, directory publishers, local newspapers, hard-core pornographers and other industries whose entire business models are disappearing thanks to online competition, legal or otherwise? What's so special about music?

The Kaye Family on LP Cover Lover
I bought this record in a charity shop years ago and fell in love with it. I don't miss having a vinyl player these days but occasionally the glory of their music pops into my memory. There are 30 second clips here but the full album download appears to have expired. Still, it's something and, if I'm honest, it's all about the glorious cover.

The unnofficial SXSW 2009 music torrent
A few years ago the SXSW music festival put mp3s from all the bands playing in a big torrent. It was a big success but for some reason they discontinued it despite still having the files on the website to download one by one. Thankfully a precedent was set and every year kind souls do the work for them. The torrents went live a couple of days ago and are now seeding nicely so you should be able to download this 5GB of tunes fairly quickly.

Celebrate Birmingham’s Underground
DJ Marc Reck is involved in a massive 12 hour event featuring 25 different promoters and the like and it's gotten him musing about the nature of such things. This quote particularly jumped out to me:

"Often, it seems that that the underground scene, its venues, and respective promoters often gets missed out of the discussion about why Birmingham is not on the map, which in this city confuses me, as at least from my eyes, the more underground events and venues, have bought a range of different music, experiences and culture to me over the last 15 years."

Tom Waits, Le Grand Rex Paris, 24th July 2008: Gig Reconstruction
The notion has occurred to me ever since I tracked all the videos from Supersonic last year, but this is the first time I've seen someone attempt to completely reconstruct a concert using mobile phone footage uploaded to YouTube. 12 out of 25 songs is not a bad hit ratio.

By the way, if you want to get analytical this is real crowdsourcing and citizen journalism. Not asking people to get stuff or send stuff to you but harvesting what the crowd collectively produces as autonomous agents. So there.

Three Buzz Boxes at once
Rob Horrocks previews the Buzz Box, hand held boxes that buzz, with a nice piece of audio. He explains:

"The sound can be controlled by the user with a knob or a sound hole to manipulate or vibrate the noise that emerges from a tiny speaker inside. Each box has an output for amplification. When the buzz boxes are linked together they form an orchestra with each box taking on a role within the buzzing ensemble. At the Digital Dystopia gig audience members will be invited to buzz to their hearts content during a 10 minute segue. Up to 24 of the boxes will be plugged in and ready to buzz before Cellardoor take to the stage."

Can't wait!
