Will Climate Change Murder All the Coffee? [Coffee]
Oh, maybe: "What we are really seeing as a company as we look 10, 20, 30 years down the road—if conditions continue as they are—is a potentially significant risk to our supply chain, which is the Arabica coffee bean," says Jim Hanna, the sustainability director at Starbucks (a bottom line-focused coffee chain whose name you might recognize). Green neighborhood in Milwaukee
Milwaukee’s newest trendy neighborhood is likely to become one of its best, and almost certainly its greenest.  The Brewery, an environmentally sensitive restoration and adaptation of historic structures among the decaying wreckage of the former Pabst Brewing Company, is already home to striking residential lofts, a great beer hall, a range of offices, Cardinal Stritch University City Center, and a small urban park.

Tea Party: Anti-Sprawl Plan Will Take Your Freedom
Even with the group of vocal critics, when the audience voted on priorities for the Bay Area, the top five were: daily needs close to home, clean air, convenient access to jobs, water conservation and lower carbon emissions. “Large homes with big yards” was near the bottom.

Sign of the times? As an old Indian proverb says, a little knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge. I refer, of course, to the title of this post.

5 Green Cities of the Future
How do green cities help in the effort against climate change? Eco-cities all share similar characteristics: They aim to reduce or eliminate fossil-fuel use, adopt sustainable building practices, promote "green space" and clean air quality, implement energy-efficient and widely available public transportation, create walkable city designs and develop well-organized mixed-use neighborhoods that combine living, working and shopping. These qualities add up to sustainableurbanism.

California Superfund First to Use 100% Solar Energy in Groundwater Cleanup
The system includes 236 heating electrodes that heat soil and groundwater to the boiling point of water.  The water and contaminants are then converted into a noxious gas that is pumped to the surface via 16 extraction wells and treated with granular activated carbon to remove the chemicals.  There are 27 temperature-monitoring wells to monitor the below ground operations.

The Landgrab Project
...in Landgrab City, Grima, Johnson, and Esparza have created an accurate scale model of how much farmland it actually takes to feed the city of Shenzhen, rather than a 3D billboard for the benefits of urban agriculture along the lines of San Francisco City Hall’s Victory Garden. (In fact, seeing the sheer quantity of agricultural land required to fulfil the city’s dietary needs might somewhat dampen the spirits of those urban farmers who cherish idealistic visions of self-sufficiency.)

Brazil’s Green World Cup?
The study includes analysis of the socioeconomic impacts of the World Cup and how to make the World Cup “greener,” and it aims to identify ways in which Brazil can ensure that “the event lasts not only a few days, but many years, leaving a positive legacy for society as a whole.”

Although Beijing may have done a better job for the 2008 Olympics, Athens still suffers from sports facilities in ruins from hosting the 2004 edition. Although the football (soccer) World Cup is not as diverse and facilities-intensive as the Olympics, I'm glad Brazil is considering sustainability as its top priority.

the company boasts of illuminating its stores with low-wattage lightbulbs but positions outlets far from city centers, where taxes are low and commuting costs high—the average IKEA customer drives 50 miles round-trip.

Bogota, Columbia: From living hell to living well
Mayor Enrique Peñalosa may resemble environmentalism, but they are no such thing. Rather, they were driven by his conversion to hedonics, an economic philosophy whose proponents focus on fostering not economic growth but human happiness.
