Why won't my MacBook detect an external display?
Stupid bug but only if you use two different external monitors.

Always unplug (the display) BEFORE putting the machine to sleep, and plug in AFTER it wakes up. OS X gets confused easily otherwise :)

How to hide an app's Dock icon
august 2010 by patrix
OS X's Dock is a great way to organize the apps you use most commonly (as well as any others you might have open). But it can get cluttered quickly. MacOSXHints.com reader JamieF recently shared a Terminal command that could help you make some room by hiding an application's Dock icon.

Error-free burning in OS X 10.6
july 2010 by patrix
While Time Machine has simplified the process of backing up your Mac's hard drive, some of us still like to occasionally make backups on physical media, such as a CD or DVD, which we can store somewhere offsite. However, as MacOSXHints.com reader idoadam points out, burning your user folder straight to disk will cause an error in 10.6. But there is an easy solution

Espionage keeps your data safe from spying eyes Review
march 2010 by patrix
Like Knox, Espionage uses encrypted disk images to store sensitive data. However, Espionage performs a bit of Finder trickery to give you the illusion that you’re interacting directly with a protected folder, instead of a disk image—the program does all the disk-image work for you, behind the scenes.

A collection of favorite Mac OS X Hints tips
february 2010 by patrix
I thought I’d pick out a sampling of my favorite blog entries from the last five-ish years—with a special focus on the older hints that still work in Leopard and Snow Leopard. These aren’t necessarily the best hints, or the most popular hints, but ones that I just find personally interesting and/or useful. In no particular order, here they are.

One way to end a stuck Time Machine backup
february 2010 by patrix
Have you ever had Time Machine get stuck—really stuck—on a backup? So stuck that clicking Stop Backing Up does nothing, so stuck that moving the On/Off slider in the Time Machine System Preferences panel to Off does nothing? If so, then this hint may help you get out of that “stucky” situation.

Well Designed Mac App Websites
january 2010 by patrix
To a Mac user, the difference between one application and the other is, in part, how well it is represented. Even though several useful applications have simplistic sites, in the vast sea of websites that we have today, looks make a difference.
