The story of our rooms
How many rooms in your home? This has been a census question in the UK since 1871. But what does the number and type of rooms say about how houses have evolved over the centuries?

Hatching a cheap way to live in Beijing
Dai Haifei, 24, a newly graduated architect, decided to make his own egg-style home after being unable to afford Beijing’s sky-high rental prices. The two-meter high house with two wheels underneath is made from sack bags on the outside wall, bamboo splints on the inside and wood chippings and grass seeds in between.

Redefining Home in a Depressed Market
How has the collapse of the housing market changed people's attitudes toward homeownership and their expectations for how they will live? Is the yearning for a McMansion on the edge of a corn field really dead?

The NY Times brings together the top housing experts for a discussion on the future of the housing market and the extent of the government's role in promoting where and how Americans live.

Death of the 'McMansion'?
Just 9 percent of the people surveyed by Trulia said their ideal home size was over 3,200 square feet. Meanwhile, more than one-third said their ideal size was under 2,000 feet.

All it took was the housing bubble to pop for people to realize that they can indeed live in a lot less space.

Rethinking home ownership
"Just how much should Uncle Sam do to help Americans buy their own homes? For 70 years — and for the last 15 in particular — the answer has been: Whatever it takes.

Now, policymakers are pausing to reconsider."

Government's role in promoting home ownership is being reconsidered after the housing market crash. Perhaps a little diversification of subsidies into other sectors of the economy will not hurt.

Home for Life
"As one mortgage broker I recently spoke with observed, “The whole idea of buying with resale value in mind is gone. All the countertops, the backyards, all those things are meaningless.”"

People are finally buying homes to live in and not for resale.

Winscape
The Winscape application splits the source footage (stills, video, whatever Quicktime will show) onto the connected displays according to the dimensions that you configure it with. It can interface with a Wii remote over bluetooth for tracking purposes. It also provides a web service interface for remote control of scene selection and a sleep command. The associated Winscape Remote iPhone application can perform these functions and also wake the Winscape computer via a Wake-On-Lan ethernet packet.

Planet Money Tracks Its Very Own Toxic Asset
Planet Money is committed to following the financial crisis to the bitter end. And what better way to do that than to own a piece of it. We bought one of those things that no one wanted, one of those things that almost brought down the global economy: our very own toxic asset. This one has more than 2,000 mortgages in it. We paid $1,000, with our own money, for our piece. It used to be worth more like $75,000. Click on the timeline and roll over the states to watch a disaster in progress.

Shower Heads That Save Water and Still Feel Good
In the pursuit of saving water — finding a low-flow shower head with high pressure — I took an inordinate number of showers, sometimes several a day. I compared the merits of 17 shower heads, each with a standard half-inch connection. Criteria included how well each could deliver an acceptably robust shower, and the usefulness of the various spray options. Also, I tested the flow rates stated by the manufacturers with a bucket and stop watch. Everyone told the truth.
