It takes Harper another second to recognize that they are dancing.

There’s a soreness in Sam’s chest as he thinks of yelling at the side of the road, Dean’s face closing tight over his terror, and the memory of rising flame blurs his eyes. Some men are too many parts monster to be saved, and Sam might still be one of them.

It would be almost frighteningly easy to step away from a time loop and simply...forget about it for a bit. Not on purpose, of course, but you know how things come up. And while it may only be a little while for the demigod creator, that could be forever in the mind of the only human who doesn't reset.

There’s a gag in Ellie’s mouth, but even if there wasn’t she still isn’t sure she could talk, because she’s so scared right now, so scared and bewildered and what has her brother gotten himself into?

“It’s going to be all right, Ellie,” Chuck says, and even though she can tell he’s just as frightened as she is, his voice is steady and sure and strong, and she loves him for it, even as she’s furiously cursing him in her head for not being smart enough to run away from the evil kidnappers with AK-47’s. She does try to speak now through the gag, and Chuck smiles like he knows what she’s trying to say.

"Tell me," he says, "how long did my father last?"

Castiel breathes out a white puff of warm air on his face. "Does it matter, Dean?"

Dean steps away, back hitting the side of the car, hands splayed against the glass so he doesn't fall.

"It matters the world," he says.

The demon knows this skin too well. It cradles the black of his soul and he sinks down into it, stretches out and it feels like home.

Alastair smirks at him. “The late, great Dean Winchester,” he says.

It’s cold enough that she can see her breath fogging up in the air, fat marshmallow puffs that disappear as quickly as they form. They trail up into the pitch black sky lit by thousands of tiny pinprick stars tossed in patterns she never bothered to learn. She counts them over the din above her, the voice that makes no real sound, just a long hard wail that vibrates against her skin.

Being proved wrong -- and by such a silly argument, all pathos but still right -- rankles. Koschei grits his teeth. "What if it was small things? Not just preventing paradoxes, but setting little things to rights?"

" 'What if'," Theta echoes, the beginnings of a smile curling his lips. "All right then. We'll do an experiment, hmm? Forget the quantum applications. We'll set history to rights a theory at a time."

Garibaldi’s mouth opens and closes a couple of times before he says, “You’re a demon?” Because whatever he was expecting, it surely wasn’t this.

The demon looks down at himself and shrugs. “You were kinda hoping for horns and a tail, weren’t you? Maybe some hooves? Yeah, I get that a lot. Sorry, man.” He points vaguely over his shoulder. “If it’ll make you feel any better, I could probably rustle up a pitchfork from somewhere.” His lips quirk, and Garibaldi just knows the creature is laughing at him.

And that’s when Garibaldi decides to go with it. “I don’t care what you look like. You can wear a rubber chicken on your head if that’s what floats your boat. A buddy of mine told me you could make deals. That true?”
