John Sheppard, who always does things on his own schedule or not at all, doesn’t freak out until four months after they lose Ford. That’s the word he uses on the rare occasions when he mentions the kid—“lose”—and it’s clear to Rodney that he means “temporarily misplace,” like Ford is a set of keys, the other blue sock, bound to turn up sooner or later as long as they keep looking.

AU where Rodney is a college professor and John owns a junk shop.

Point is, Sheppard means trouble. And Trouble is James T. Kirk's middle name. Give or take a few letters.

On the seventeenth day after the jumper crashed, Rodney realized that the man he was stranded with was not John Sheppard.

John owns a coffee roastery in San Francisco. Rodney is the Angry Customer Zero who is bound to tell him where to stick his beans.

He wakes up in a hospital bed, with an IV in his arm and a sharp but muffled pain in his left side. Even when he manages to open his eyes completely, the room is hazy, its edges and lines bleeding into the glare of the low morning sun.

Alien, he thinks. I was shot by an alien. And then, with a detached calm that is too familiar to put down to the morphine, I’m not dead.

“B-” Rodney had no chance to get any further than that.

John. The name seems solid if not familiar, a passable identity – nothing about it makes him cringe, at least, and he's been called other things (he thinks) these past few days that weren't so benign.

Sheppard's got one chance, and Rodney is going to find it, no matter what.

The first time, Rodney says, "I don't understand," and John says, "Please," and the bed is too far away - the wall is closer, just as flat.

Even as he walks down the corridor, familiar and wrong, he is trying to fit into the role.

He was almost to his quarters when the thought occurred to him.

"You did what you had to do," Frank Sheppard says. "You come back from war an asshole, but you don't have to stay that way."

So basically, he realizes, somewhat disturbed, he’s expecting Rodney’s cat to be kind of like Puss in Boots from the second Shrek movie, only perhaps with a little pair of wire-rimmed spectacles perched on its nose, and not voiced by Antonio Banderas.

When the conditions are right, illusions stretch and flip everything on the horizon into funky shimmering shapes above the sea ice, and he'll never stop thinking that's cool.

Some things stay the same no matter where you are.

Rodney’s never understood the benefit of swallowing thoughts and feelings. He has enough reasons for his ulcers already; he doesn’t need to run around repressing and hiding all the time.

He’s got the fingers of one hand curled loosely around the neck of a bottle of sweet, dark Czech beer, the name of which he can’t even begin to pronounce when he’s sober (“Vikl… Vel… Velaka… ” “Is beer, John. Just say beer.”)

John isn't sure of his place in the universe after Carson makes a surprising discovery.
