John owns a coffee roastery in San Francisco. Rodney is the Angry Customer Zero who is bound to tell him where to stick his beans.

He wakes up in a hospital bed, with an IV in his arm and a sharp but muffled pain in his left side. Even when he manages to open his eyes completely, the room is hazy, its edges and lines bleeding into the glare of the low morning sun.

Alien, he thinks. I was shot by an alien. And then, with a detached calm that is too familiar to put down to the morphine, I’m not dead.

“I see what you mean,” says Carson with a little frown. “Ok, Colonel. Let’s run a few more tests, shall we?”

John hides a snicker with another retreat to the kitchen, and picks out the biggest muffin for Cup Guy; he's an asshole, but he deserves a big muffin for coming up with that one on the fly.

“It’s science’s answer to reincarnation,” he said. “Well, alien technology’s, anyway.”

In practice, sometimes you have to color outside the lines to survive. In a perfect world, "don't ask, don't tell" would solve something. In the world they actually live in, the only safe bet is simply don't.
