On top of the project proposals he keeps mocking up and Erica keeps shooting down, the red-tape the military keeps mummifying the science department in, and the overwhelming rush of adrenaline that comes from the knowledge that in three weeks, he'll be leaving the Milky Way galaxy, he also has to worry about his underlings staging a mutiny.

In the face of all the things going on in Mark's head, meeting one Air Force major doesn't register, much.

John Sheppard, who always does things on his own schedule or not at all, doesn’t freak out until four months after they lose Ford. That’s the word he uses on the rare occasions when he mentions the kid—“lose”—and it’s clear to Rodney that he means “temporarily misplace,” like Ford is a set of keys, the other blue sock, bound to turn up sooner or later as long as they keep looking.

"Have you *seen* that Czech kid you flagged to do Gerontius? I seriously don’t think he’s left the third-floor bathroom since you told him he has five days to learn an eighty-page score.”

"So, how come you're not off saving another galaxy right now?" He knows the amused tone will anger her, because there is nothing worse than having someone taunt you for the reality you've created.

"Because I'm dead," she replies easily, jumping her red piece to edge of his side of the board. "King me."

AU where Rodney is a college professor and John owns a junk shop.

Point is, Sheppard means trouble. And Trouble is James T. Kirk's middle name. Give or take a few letters.

It comes to her in the night, like a lover, a ghost. This dream she's had since childhood. Except that's not right - it doesn't feel like a dream, it never has, but more a blood-memory, a shur, something bad, something wicked. A nightmare. It always starts the same. A forest; trees scratching up the night sky, their shapes dark, sinister and their edges vague, like they're not even sure where they end or begin, their borders or existence. There's a man by her side, pale face lit up like a 'Lantean tower. Crooked nose and full lips. His color bleeds into the landscape, too. She loves him. "Run," she screams. They're running. "Hurry!" And she knows, suddenly, that they're not running. They're being chased.

It's easy to descend to the underworld; it's getting back that's the trick.

On the seventeenth day after the jumper crashed, Rodney realized that the man he was stranded with was not John Sheppard.

John owns a coffee roastery in San Francisco. Rodney is the Angry Customer Zero who is bound to tell him where to stick his beans.

He wakes up in a hospital bed, with an IV in his arm and a sharp but muffled pain in his left side. Even when he manages to open his eyes completely, the room is hazy, its edges and lines bleeding into the glare of the low morning sun.

Alien, he thinks. I was shot by an alien. And then, with a detached calm that is too familiar to put down to the morphine, I’m not dead.

“You complete and utter moron! How on earth did you manage to get to this galaxy, let alone survive so long without being killed, while being such a total imbecile? Can you even read? There was a report, a detailed one! Shall I do the next one with pictures and small words?”

“B-” Rodney had no chance to get any further than that.

Fourteen years, eight months, and seven days after John and Rodney meet, the clock starts all over again.

“How do you feel, Colonel?”

Sheppard glares, but almost immediately responds. “I’m pretty damned embarrassed right now. Irritated. Not too thrilled about being the dog in your dog and pony show. I’m a little worried that this isn’t out of my system yet, and that you didn’t catch it the first time around, Carson. I’m hoping Teyla doesn’t kick my ass too hard for what I said earlier. And the way Ronon won’t stop staring at me is making me really want to go out and shoot things.”

“Ok. Ok. Stop talking,” cuts in Rodney, and crosses his arms over his chest, looking pointedly at Beckett.

“I see what you mean,” says Carson with a little frown. “Ok, Colonel. Let’s run a few more tests, shall we?”

There is a gap in the multiverse. It's mainly unremarked, and it's not very important, but then it serves its purpose. After all, the companions of great men and women must have somewhere to put their feet up as well, at the end of the day.

I was ready for a little dark. Which was why I took the night beat when I made detective the year after arriving in Seattle.

Besides, nobody gets themselves murdered during the day.

And I seemed to have a knack for solving murders.

"Right," and thank God, he actually shuts up and just balances the circuitboard on one knee and points his stupid sonic screwdriver at it and presses a button. It's the most ridiculously unscientific thing Rodney has ever seen. He kind of wants to cry.

But just like before, they pause: a plateau on a line graph before the next spike.

His hands are wrong—too smooth, too pink. Nails blunt, trimmed short. And when he moves, the weight and heft of it is off. Like he’s woken up in someone else’s body.

Unwilling to accept that Sateda has been destroyed, Ronon -- newly aided by the citizens of Atlantis -- convinces Weir to let him visit his homeworld and see things for himself.
