John Sheppard, who always does things on his own schedule or not at all, doesn’t freak out until four months after they lose Ford. That’s the word he uses on the rare occasions when he mentions the kid—“lose”—and it’s clear to Rodney that he means “temporarily misplace,” like Ford is a set of keys, the other blue sock, bound to turn up sooner or later as long as they keep looking.

On the seventeenth day after the jumper crashed, Rodney realized that the man he was stranded with was not John Sheppard.

John owns a coffee roastery in San Francisco. Rodney is the Angry Customer Zero who is bound to tell him where to stick his beans.

He wakes up in a hospital bed, with an IV in his arm and a sharp but muffled pain in his left side. Even when he manages to open his eyes completely, the room is hazy, its edges and lines bleeding into the glare of the low morning sun.

Alien, he thinks. I was shot by an alien. And then, with a detached calm that is too familiar to put down to the morphine, I’m not dead.

“B-” Rodney had no chance to get any further than that.

There is a gap in the multiverse. It's mainly unremarked, and it's not very important, but then it serves its purpose. After all, the companions of great men and women must have somewhere to put their feet up as well, at the end of the day.

Sheppard's got one chance, and Rodney is going to find it, no matter what.

"Right," and thank God, he actually shuts up and just balances the circuitboard on one knee and points his stupid sonic screwdriver at it and presses a button. It's the most ridiculously unscientific thing Rodney has ever seen. He kind of wants to cry.

That is an unusual occurrence. He may be scowled at, smirked upon, laughed at, or even yelled at, but he is never just ignored.

John thinks it's kind of pretty, but Rodney hates this, obviously -- he's hunching his shoulders and shivering ostentatiously, batting with ridiculous violence at the almost imperceptible drift of flakes around them.
