Sam sits quiet beside him, not quite staring out the window, not quite looking at the map, a bundle of nerves and apology hunched down in the seat as if Dean might forget he's there if he's small enough, but that isn't possible; even in his absence, Sam was huge, bigger than everything. Sam still knows two things as absolute facts.

1. Even though Sam was the one who knocked over the milk, Dean was the one who got in trouble for not watching Sam, or for encouraging him, or for setting a bad example. That was just how things worked.

2. Sam’s three-year-old self was not sorry because even then Sam was willing to do anything to make Dean happy, no matter what the price. And even then, no matter how good his intentions were, things always ended up with Dean in trouble.

Dean's been chasing this particular horizon for hours now, miles marked more by the ever-dipping level of the thermos than by county lines and signposts. Forty-eight ounces of bitter-black gas station caffeine guzzled down to dregs while the globe turned itself around, offered the Old World some time in the sun.

Dean stumbles back into the motel room just before dawn, aching all over and still drenched with the scent of flowers, and he can't get the smile off his face.

Here’s how the car thing shook down.

Four people in the Impala? Did. Not. Work. There was not a single tolerable configuration. Dean looks at her. She has just saved his ass, and Sam's, and not for the first time, or the fifth, or the twentieth. And she's looking down at Sam's unconscious body like a mother hen with only one chick. Still. “I don't trust you,” he says roughly.

"Here." Looking back up again, she sees a crumpled, grease-stained napkin in Dean's fingers. She takes it. Tally's Diner it reads in faded navy blue, and underneath is a phone number written down with a temperamental pen. [4.20 coda]

The thing is, Dean doesn't really do horses. It has to do with a Fourth of July parade and a string of fire crackers and a horse dressed, improbably, like Uncle Sam. Dean doesn't remember a lot of the incident, if he's honest with himself, but he does remember horseshoes striking asphalt so hard and frenzied that they seemed to spark, and the thing's eyes rolled back so they were nothing but whites, and in hindsight, Dean thinks that maybe the thing was possessed.

"Dean?"

"'m okay," Dean said, resigning himself to it. "Don't let my brains leak out, Sam."

Sam snorted. "I'm not sure that would be a noticeable change."

Dean twisted his head, tried to bite at Sam's fingers but Sam was too quick and pulled away, the cloth coming unstuck from Dean's head, peeled off like a band-aid and it wasn't pleasant. It made Dean dizzy, a sloshing sensation in his brain.

The day Dean gets out of hell, the sun is shining and the sky is that postcard shade of blue, like maybe it goes on forever and if it doesn't, at least it goes deep, tight and familiar wire around his heart.

In which Sam learns to take his dad's advice, the accounting equation is abused, and "zapped" is a technical term. Supernaturally speaking.

"Let me go, Sam," and Dean's voice was different, lower and stirring, not screwing around anymore, and Sam let him go at once. And he held his breath, because there was something here, something Sam had half-expected half a million times, this idiotic tension between the two of them that had had him terrified at fifteen and exhilarated at seventeen and morbidly depressed at nineteen, all this stupid potential and it was just like the two of them to have not lived up to it.

It's the kind of town where he and Dean stick out like sore thumbs, with their scarred-up hands and their clothes that won't get clean and their tendency to case a room when they walk through the door.

The high school is even worse. When Dean pulls over into the bus zone, they both grimace at the wholesome game of Frisbee going on out front, the girls sitting on the steps killing time by braiding each other's hair. It's like something out of a Norman Rockwell.

"Wow," Dean chuckles, drawing the word out long and slow. He slaps a hand down on Sam's thigh. "Have fun, Sammy."

[The Panabaker 'joke' is distracting, but otherwise it's near perfect - hot and awkward and real. Slightly underage Sam.]

There’s a soreness in Sam’s chest as he thinks of yelling at the side of the road, Dean’s face closing tight over his terror, and the memory of rising flame blurs his eyes. Some men are too many parts monster to be saved, and Sam might still be one of them.

It would be almost frighteningly easy to step away from a time loop and simply...forget about it for a bit. Not on purpose, of course, but you know how things come up. And while it may only be a little while for the demigod creator, that could be forever in the mind of the only human who doesn't reset.

“A car wash voucher? Yes, you’re right. It’s evil. It must be stopped. Next it’ll want to wax on and wax off.”

“Dude, I’m being serious! Stop making Mr Miyagi jokes.” Dean can hear the pitch of his voice rising, but Sam isn’t hearing him, and they’re obviously in danger, and sometimes being Sam’s older brother is a seriously tough gig, because he’s a moron with no street smarts.

Sam rolls his eyes. “Dean, your paranoia is not even a little bit cute.”

“Yeah, well, don’t come crying to me when a good luck demon attacks you and you’re screaming for help like a girl and I’m too busy saying I told you so to save your sorry ass.”

It wasn't a bad day when Sam woke up. Then he discovered Dean had turned into a giant dust bunny, so it was.

Ella and Ruth were sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch when the boys showed up for the first time. Angeline was sitting on the top step of the porch, sunning her calves, but that was Angeline for you, she always had to make a point of how she was younger and more limber, and even pretended that her hair was really still black, as if anyone would believe that. Ella's hair was a shade of orange never encountered in nature, no pretense there, and Ruth, always the rebel, was growing hers out and had a sort of two-tone effect going, two inches of steel gray around her head and then a fluffy brown halo.

There is more to Dean, he believes, than blood and bone and muscle. There's some hidden mystery, beyond simple anatomy, of who he is.

It just happens from time to time--they'll stop somewhere without any doubles, and they'll get the king-sized bed instead of paying for two rooms. Every time, Dean insists on playing rock-paper-scissors for it; every time, he loses.

Dean is not speaking to him this morning. Dean says things, he directs them at Sam, but they're holdovers. They peer through the ice to see what's beneath it without breaking it. The way they roll into town, always rubbing up on one another, in each other’s space. Shoulder thumps and the ”accidental” ways their hips bump.

Oh, darling, he says, smooth and sweet like he's picking someone up in a bar. Oh, sweetheart, don't you wanna come off that rack? Don't you wanna get comfortable again?

"Fuck you," she whispers, her voice an echo of something he doesn't quite remember now.

"Tell me," he says, "how long did my father last?"

Castiel breathes out a white puff of warm air on his face. "Does it matter, Dean?"

Dean steps away, back hitting the side of the car, hands splayed against the glass so he doesn't fall.

"It matters the world," he says.

The demon knows this skin too well. It cradles the black of his soul and he sinks down into it, stretches out and it feels like home.

Alastair smirks at him. “The late, great Dean Winchester,” he says.

"Wow," she said as she handed him another load of fries. "You're really chasing that heart attack."

"That and your beautiful self," he said, smooth like Hollywood, circa 1950.

"I don't get off until midnight."

"Then I'll just have to wait," Dean said gallantly. "Gorge myself on French fries until my stomach pops."

That was where it started, but it doesn’t stay there. It isn’t a surprise anymore, waking up in the morning to find Dean still alive, but it still feels soap-bubble fragile, like one wrong move might crack the whole world open again. Sam moves carefully, keeps close, and even though Dean gets it now – understands in his tight-lipped, glowering way – it’s obvious he doesn’t like it. ... In some ways it is utterly alien to touch his brother now, and in some ways it is the closest thing to coming home.

Sam watched his brother go straight to his own bed, kneel down, and put his hands together in prayer over the coverlet. “Dear God: take your damn angel back. I’ve had it with his bullshit. Amen.”

"Are you seriously telling me to sleep with my brother?"

"Yes."

"He's my brother."

"He's also your partner and the only person with whom you have significant contact at this point."

"We're related!"

"Many of the cultural taboos associated with incest are related to reproduction," says Dr. Brennan. "Since you and your brother are incapable of reproducing, being related isn't actually a problem."

They go, he and Sam. Dean the blunt instrument and Sam the belief behind it.

Dean’s not sure what’s worse: the punch or the certain knowledge that he deserves it.

A tiny white light on the console blinks on and off silently.

On, off… on, off… on, off…

Dean's eyes crack open, fix blearily upon the light. His cheek is flat against the controls of the navigation panel, the keys no doubt imprinting their shapes into his skin. After a moment of continued nothing, he sits up and looks about the cockpit. No one but him. The ship seems to be running itself, albeit without a course set. It's just – just drifting.

He swallowed. "Did you look at the cards?" he asked. She sighed. The bed creaked as she rolled over to face him, and in the dim her eyes were black.

"Cards are for amateurs," she said. "I didn't need to."

"What did they, what did you-- you know."

"There are some things you shouldn't know," she said, flat and final. He bit the inside of his cheek.

"That's cheery."

She kissed the side of his neck. "You think if you know what happens, you can change it?" He took a breath and she shook her head ever so slightly. "Honey, maybe that’s why I can't tell you."

Castiel is waiting by the window, waiting for Dean to acknowledge his presence. His hands hang limply at his sides, fingers ever so slightly curled, like Castiel doesn't know what to do with them. His eyes are wide and sincere, the look on his face is so guileless it's almost childlike.

Sam is very good at giving head, about as good as he is at researching the occult and conjugating verbs in Latin, and one time when he was drunk (before this time now, because boy howdy is he heading for a stomach pump tonight) he asked a Rastafarian at some frat party how do you conjugate pain and then laughed and laughed at his own joke that wasn’t a joke at all, because Latin is deader than a dead thing.

So, he’s a little-lot drunk. Not scary motherfucker drunk, although he’ll try to get there if he can find the co-ordinates.
