In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to engineer replicants, beings with magic abilities used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. Arthur Pendragon is a Blade Runner, a cop who specializes in terminating replicants whenever they become a liability.

Three months after Uther’s death, Merlin leads Arthur out to the lake where he cast away the sword that defeated the Black Knight and tells him about his magic.

Or, well. He tries, at least.

Arthur tilts his head back, eyeing the purple stain spreading across the ceiling, mouth curved in a mocking smile. "Good evening, Lord Merlin. How does your search for domestic help--"

"I will turn you into a frog, I swear to God."

"Years ago," Arthur says because he's an utter, utter bastard, "I, too, suffered the indignity of incompetent help. It's a trial, I know, but rank has its burdens-"

Merlin's having a moment with himself (and uses his magic in ways he could never tell Gaius).

Considering Arthur's future wife will be chosen less for compatibility than for her political value, Merlin may be the only marriage he'll have that won't end in bloodshed or a great deal of fortifying wine. [Britpicked.]

"You know, Merlin," Gaius said, with the expression that meant he wondered if Merlin really was mentally damaged, "I didn't give you the book so you could cast a love spell on the Crown Prince." [Brit English]

This is a very useful spell, Merlin wrote. He formed the letters carefully, small so he could write more later, if he needed to, and did not at all wonder if he was going to get in trouble or be cursed or something for writing in the margins of an ancient spell book.

He told the book (in case it had an opinion on the matter), "I am just imparting my knowledge to future generations. I'm sure they will find my comments helpful."

"If you'd been lectured by my father for four hours on your thirteenth birthday about all the many disasters that occur to a realm when you muddy the succession with bastards, you wouldn't have been very quick to dive into bed with the nearest servant girl, either," Arthur muttered. [American spelling, but otherwise no glaring Americanisms.]

It started when Merlin added stinkweed to Arthur's fireplace. "Is there a dead fish in this room?" Arthur had said for about three days, until he finally caught Merlin smirking.

Arthur didn't speak to him for a week after he found out.

Magic thunders in his veins now, not like the ripples and aftershocks he's used to, the feeling of potential.

In which dragons & ghosts & prejudices are confronted, Merlin wears a hat (twice) and a dress (once), Arthur breaks some crockery (lots), there are more pranks than pillowfights but at least one of each, and many secrets are revealed.

Merlin was no expert, but the minstrel troupe's performance in the courtyard seemed to be going fairly well until the dragon landed on the roof of the Great Hall.

And then on his next mouthful, he bit down on something hard and wondered for a moment if he couldn't just swallow it. But Arthur must have seen his expression, because he looked anticipatory and said, "Come on, Merlin, spit it out and let's see."

He did and the piece in his hand had a rose engraved on it -- puzzled, he showed it to Arthur. And then he knew his future was going to be wretched, after all, because Arthur's countenance turned gleeful and he shouted to the hall, "Merlin's the Maiden!"

The hall exploded into whooping and cat-calls, and Merlin wondered how bad it would be if the ground really did swallow him whole.

"What is it?" Arthur demands.

"Oh, it's a thingy. It does things," Merlin says with a vague wave of his hands that could either indicate that it might destroy an entire city block or cook rice.

"It's a thingy that does things?" Arthur repeats. "You don't know what it does, do you?"

"Yeah, you're right," Merlin nods. "It was a really boring meeting. I fell asleep."

"Of course you did," Arthur sighs, and then narrows his eyes at the slight change in expression on Merlin's face.

Merlin starts laughing. "I'm having you on. I invented it."

Arthur glares.

"You're a bastard and I hate you," he said conversationally, rolling an apple towards Merlin and Merlin shrugged agreement and bit into the apple to hide his grin. "But I suppose you might not be completely worthless," Arthur said, closing his eyes and yawning as well.
