Art Markman, PhD: Using awareness to increase willpower

TEMPTATION
If you are in a situation where you have had a rough day, you should know that there is some chance that you will have difficulty resisting future temptations. To help you out, spend a few moments thinking about who you are and who you really want to be. This additional self-awareness will help to inoculate you against new temptations and make it more likely that you’ll use your willpower successfully.

Is Plant Liberation on the Menu? - NYTimes.com
3 days ago
Given the co-evolution that brought together plants and humans, we are more interdependent with the world of vegetation, in the depths of our being, than we realize. “We are what we eat” rings even truer now that Chinese researchers discovered that molecules of rice survive the digestion process, enter the blood stream of animals and regulate the expression of mammalian genes. Violence against plants backfires, as it leads to violence against humans and against the environment as a whole, for instance when plants are genetically modified and made resistant to insects, pests or diseases. Minimally, then, respect for whatever we eat must filter through human self-respect, as the eaten becomes a part of who or what we, ourselves, are.

Nothingness (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
All roads are blocked to a philosophy which reduces everything to the word ‘no.’ To ‘no’ there is only one answer and that is ‘yes.’ Nihilism has no substance. There is no such thing as nothingness, and zero does not exist. Everything is something. Nothing is nothing. Man lives more by affirmation than by bread.

One day in Hell the Devil approached a man who loved the drinking parties there. The Devil told the man that as long as he was willing to quit drinking he could immediately go to Heaven, where he would forever have a better time. The man replied that although Hell wasn’t so bad, and the parties were great, he preferred Heaven, and was willing to go there right now. The Devil told him that if he wanted he could have a great send-off party now, and go to Heaven tomorrow. The man thought it seemed a good idea to have the best of both worlds, so he accepted the deal. The next day the man was reminiscing about how great the send-off party was when the Devil approached him and said he could have another terrific party right then, and go to Heaven the next day. Of course the man accepted. Each day the Devil made the same offer, and each day the man accepted the party, replying, “I’ll quit drinking tomorrow.” Well, the Devil knew that the man didn’t have what it takes to ever refuse a great party.

Maimonides and Method Acting - By Samuel Katz | Unpious.com
13 days ago
The Talmudic quandary is over how to solicit a writ of divorce from a man unwilling to give one. The man cannot be made to do so against his will, but a court may find it necessary to compel him. The Talmud provides the solution: the court may beat him “until he declares ‘I am willing.’” About which Maimonides explains that within each to Jew there is an inherent desire to behave according to God’s will; he may just not allow himself to do that which he himself desires. Therefore, the court can compel him to realize his own desire, and ergo, the get, hence, will be valid.

Logic and Neutrality - NYTimes.com
Of course, we’d be in trouble if we could never agree on anything in logic. Fortunately, we can secure enough agreement in logic for most purposes, but nothing in the nature of logic guarantees those agreements. Perhaps the methodological privilege of logic is not that its principles are so weak, but that they are so strong. They are formulated at such a high level of generality that, typically, if they crash, they crash so badly that we easily notice, because the counterexamples to them are simple. If we want to identify what is genuinely distinctive of logic, we should stop overlooking its close similarities to the rest of science.

In 1970 Michael established one of the first British art therapy training courses at Birmingham, and later the first in Canada, at Concordia University, Montreal, which awarded him the first emeritus professorship of art therapy. He attended all of the annual summer courses established by Irene Champernowne in the hope of preserving some of Withymead's values, latterly as their chair, until 2005. He was a founder member, ex-chair, fellow and lifelong honorary member of the British Association of Art Therapists.

Denial Logic « Chris Winstead
Denial logic also provides a means for modeling an aggressive skeptic, i.e. an agent who is concerned only with knowing that certain beliefs are false. The aggressive skeptic may have no need for true beliefs. The paper’s authors suggest that Denial Logic may be used to model an aggressive skeptical position in the debate on global climate change. In this context, there are certainly economic and political motives that might inspire an agent to adopt a stance of pure denial. For the climate-change-denial agent, is not sufficient to merely disbelieve the prevailing views on climate change (as would a conventional skeptic). Furthermore, within the climate-debate context, the agent may have no use for true beliefs about climate change. This agent is concerned only with aggressively debunking the prevailing claims.

The Mystery of the Charity of Charles Peguy - Geoffrey Hill
5 weeks ago
Unlike his earlier collections, this volume is devoted almost entirely to a single, expansive poem. Asking "Did Péguy kill Jaurès ? Did he incite / the assassin ?" Hill spins out a cycle that deals with questions of politics, history, religion, and the role of the artist and the individual in shaping the events of that time. Hill uses World War I and its horrors here, writing in part with great historical specificity, but as always his concerns are larger ones -- and as usual he conveys them well.

I have fought in wars, stormed beaches at 4am, walked into boardrooms, and dealt with every concieveable situation and my 3x5 card has outlasted everytool since 1955. This includes Franklin Daytimers, Filofax, Palm Pilot, Trio Phone etc.. Long live the 3x5 card. (Comment is from my friend Henry, I wasn't born in 1955).

Best Archival Quality Ink - The Fountain Pen Network
8 weeks ago
I am not sure where you live, but I made my own iron gall ink optimized for fountain pens. It is based on the german "Urkundentinte" chancery specifications and is the ink de facto for important state treaties and other important documents. It is in fact the ink specified to be the only legal archival ink for writing and signing state treaties. You must however use a wet nib, to get good deep black strokes.
The ink is completely waterproof and unlike the MB midnight blue or Lamy blue-black iron gall, the dye compound does not bleed from the paper, but is fixed inside the ferrogallotannate pigment into the ink stroke after a few days of oxidation.
