Why Software Projects are Terrible and How Not To Fix Them | Sealed Abstract
"I can find troubled projects, swoop in and save them through sheer competence, and save the day.  This is probably the biggest single lie a developer can tell himself." Honk.

Hacker News | All of the "heavy" agiles like Scrum have confused me: isn't agile about fundame...
"All of the 'heavy' agiles like Scrum have confused me: isn't agile about fundamentally less process and more flexibility? One can't serve two masters. Teams have to pick a point along the completely structured - completely flexible line. As far as I'm concerned, these flavors of agile are just wolves in sheep's clothing that allow existing waterfall autocrats to continue their reign under the guise of adopting 'agile.'" Amen to that. Use the parts that make sense, jettison the parts with large overheads and ideology. Be pragmatic.

String | Create a multi-language website or app | myGengo
This looks like it could be most handy. "If you’re building a multi-language website or app, you probably use language files. When you change content in one language file, you need to remember to update the other language files. Even with source control, this can get messy pretty quickly if you have many languages, many translators or a large site. We encountered these problems ourselves and needed a tool to keep things organized - so we built String."

Alex Payne — Don't Be A Hero
"Heroes are damaging to a team because they become a crutch. As soon as you have someone who’s always willing to work at all hours, the motivation from the rest of the team to produce reliable, trouble-free software drops. The hero is a human patch."

Trac Workflow blocking - Stack Overflow
"Is there a way to block a given change based on the user role? For example, I don't want any developer to be able to change a ticket status from 'development' to 'closed'. I want it to go through 'test', and allow 'test' to 'closed' only to users with the test role."

ongoing · Doing It Wrong
"What I’m writing here is the single most important take-away from my Sun years, and it fits in a sentence: The community of developers whose work you see on the Web, who probably don’t know what ADO or UML or JPA even stand for, deploy better systems at less cost in less time at lower risk than we see in the Enterprise. This is true even when you factor in the greater flexibility and velocity of startups."

Technical Debt - 10x Software Development
"The reason most often cited by technical staff for avoiding debt altogether is the challenge of communicating the existence of technical debt to business staff and the challenge of helping business staff remember the implications of the technical debt that has previously been incurred. Everyone agrees that it's a good idea to incur debt late in a release cycle, but business staff can sometimes resist accounting for the time needed to pay off the debt on the next release cycle. The main issue seems to be that, unlike financial debt, technical debt is much less visible, and so people have an easier time ignoring it."

Are you doing agile or are you doing waterfall with some agile practices? at Making good software
"You can be doing agile without performing any of the current recommended practices and you can perform all the recommended practices and still not be agile. Lots of teams believe they are practicing agile just because they are doing standups or TDD… That’s like pretending to be a musician because you have the best instrument."

Design management – Jeffrey Zeldman Presents The Daily Report
"For those who have no control over which clients and projects come to them, there is still hope, because everyone on the web (not just professional designers and developers) has the ability to produce meaningful content, and every designer and developer additionally has the power to create products and services. As your own client, working alone, or with a carefully hand-picked team, you can produce great things".
