The Foreign Language of 'Mad Men' - Atlantic Mobile
10 weeks ago by ohskylab
"Even more than anachronism, a core theme of Mad Men is the lost art of personal reserve, self-effacement, and mystery. When Don Draper says, "Tell Jimmy I need to talk to him" in season 2 instead of "I have to talk to him," it hits a slightly more narcissistic, self-revealing note than it should. A baby boomer might set up a business meeting by invoking his personal needs; but a member of the "silent generation"—particularly one living a double life like Draper—doesn't talk about himself quite so readily."

Steven Poole: Thesaurosis
february 2010 by ohskylab
"What differentiates this thesaurus from any other is that it is, as the title announces, historical: combining the data of the Oxford English Dictionary and the Thesaurus of Old English, it presents meanings in chronological order, noting when terms first appeared, often when they disappeared, or whether they were one-shots, lovely doomed coinages such as “moonling”."

String | Create a multi-language website or app | myGengo
january 2010 by ohskylab
This looks like it could be most handy. "If you’re building a multi-language website or app, you probably use language files. When you change content in one language file, you need to remember to update the other language files. Even with source control, this can get messy pretty quickly if you have many languages, many translators or a large site. We encountered these problems ourselves and needed a tool to keep things organized - so we built String."

Skeuomorph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
june 2009 by ohskylab
a term used in the history of architecture, design, and archaeology. It refers to a derivative object which retains ornamental design cues to structure that was necessary in the original. Skeuomorphs may be deliberately employed to make the new look comfortably old and familiar, such as copper cladding on zinc pennies or computer printed postage with circular town name and cancellation lines."

"Art bollocks has become institutionalised, normalised and is now practically the default way of writing about art and culture for seasoned journalists and a-level students alike. Like Orwell’s Newspeak, art bollocks is variously used in a knowing way, as an in-joke, a private language, a posture, or maybe out of fear – to maintain some questionable status among equally questionable peers."

"Mr Foster says that what must be done is to teach organisations to "expand their talent management agenda from a narrow and tactical focus on human resources activities around the employee life cycle, to a broad and strategic focus on highly integrated systems of capabilities fundamental to business strategies and operations". This is shameful, outrageous bilge."

Lobby Lud - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
november 2008 by ohskylab
"Anonymous employees of the newspaper would visit seaside resorts. The newspaper would print details of the town, a description of the appearance of that day's "Lobby Lud", and a particular pass phrase. Anyone carrying a copy of the newspaper could challenge "Lobby Lud" with the appropriate phrase, and receive the sum of money."
