How to reduce wind noise on your smartphone recordings - Archival Sounds
"You can use a woolly smartphone 'sock' as an improvised windshield. One with a fairly open weave will produce less muffled results than a sock with a microfibre lining. Pulling the sock about half way down the phone lets you get at the touchscreen and also creates a small but necessary air space around the microphone."

DJ TechTools  |  MacBook USB Port Inequality
"For MacBook and MacBook Pro users, the choice of which of the two available USB ports to use for your sound card hook-up may have never occurred to you. New evidence is showing, that especially with the new i5 and i7 models, you might be missing out on performance by choosing the wrong port."

Why records DO all sound the same | Word Magazine
"There's a little-watched video on Maroon Five's YouTube channel which documents the torturous, tedious process of crafting an instantly forgettable mainstream radio hit. It's fourteen minutes of elegantly dishevelled chaps sitting in leather sofas, playing $15,000 vintage guitars next to $200,000 studio consoles, staring at notepads and endlessly discussing how little they like the track (called Makes Me Wonder), and how it doesn't have a chorus. Even edited down, the tedium is mind-boggling as they play the same lame riff over and over and over again. At one point, singer Adam Levine says: "I'm sick of trying to engineer songs to be hits." But that's exactly he proceeds to do."

The Loudness War Analyzed « Music Machinery
"I’m interested in looking at the loudness for the recordings of a number of artists to see how wide-spread this loudness war really is. To do this I used the Echo Nest remix API and a bit of Python to collect and plot loudness for a set of recordings. I did two experiments. First I looked at the loudness for music by some of my favorite or well known artists. Then I looked at loudness over a large collection of music."

In Search of the Click Track
"Use this application to look at tempo plots for any song to see which bands have a machine controlling the heartbeat of the band. Type in the name of an artist and/or track and get a click plot of the track. If a machine is setting the beat for the song, the click plot will show only small deviations from the average tempo. A flat line means a machine is setting the beat."

Wheel of Stars
"A musical clock made of stars. To make this, I downloaded public data from Hipparcos, a satellite launched by the European Space Agency in 1989 that accurately measured over a hundred thousand stars. The data I downloaded contains position, parallax, magnitude, and color information, among other things. I used this information to plot the brightest stars, and cause them to revolve about Polaris (the North Star) very slowly, as the stars appear to do. Like the night sky, this is a sidereal time clock -- it takes nearly 24 hours for the stars to fully rotate."

Si Begg's next release out for free. "Don't get me wrong I'm all for me making money out of my music. But as I say, i'm not exactly churning out platinum hit singles here. I'm thinking its more likely I'll make my money a) from possibly licensing the tracks to compilations b) PRS royalties from radio play etc c) maybe getting the tracks used in film and TV d) gig, remix and production work encouraged by generally raising my profile. All of which is more likely to happen the more people that get to hear and hopefully enjoy my music."

Kiddie Records Weekly
"Kiddie Records Weekly began in 2005 as a one year project devoted to the golden age of children's records. This period spanned from the mid forties through the early fifties and produced a wealth of all-time classics. Many of these recordings were extravagant Hollywood productions on major record labels and featured big time celebrities and composers. Over the years, these forgotten treasures slipped off the radar and it became our mission to give them a new lease on life by sharing them with today's generation of online listeners."

» That Sony Meeting Song, by Toad
"Columbia Records, part of Sony BMG, [...] invited [Winston's Zen] in to talk to them and suggested he bring along a couple of other bloggers and make something of a meeting out of it. So last Thursday [some MP3 bloggers] went along, the Sony people booked a table in a pub and we talked about stuff and drank ourselves into a stupour. And what did we achieve? Well honestly, I’d say not an awful lot, really." Worth reading despite that, though.
