Snow Leopard users most likely to be infected with Flashback - Mac software - Macworld UK
4 weeks ago by nicoladagostino
63.4% of the Flashback-infected machines identified themselves as running OS X 10.6, or Snow Leopard, the newest version of Apple's operating system that comes with Java.
Snow Leopard accounted for the largest share of OS X last month, according to metrics company Net Applications, making it the prime target of Flashback.
Leopard, or OS X 10.5, is the second-most-common Flashback-infected operating system, said Doctor Web: 25.5% of the 95,000 Macs harboring the malware ran that 2007 edition.
Apple bundled Java with Leopard as well, but unlike Snow Leopard and Lion, it no longer ships security updates for the OS, and so has not updated Java on those Macs.
Last month, Leopard powered 13.6% of all Macs.
But while Snow Leopard's and Leopard's infection rates are higher than their usage shares, the opposite's true of OS X 10.7, or Lion. The 2011 OS accounted for 39.6% of all copies of OS X used last month, yet represented only 11.2% of the Flashback-compromised Macs.
That disparity seems to validate Apple's 2010 decision "deprecate" Java, or stop bundling the software with OS X. Lion was the first to omit Java, although users have been free to download and install it themselves.
The lower Flashback-infection rate on OS X Lion (at far right) shows Apple's decision to dump Java was a smart one. (Data: Doctor Web and Net Applications.)
Doctor Web did not connect those dots in its analysis, but the numbers make clear that versions of Mac OS X that included Java -- Snow Leopard and Leopard -- are much more likely to be infected by Flashback. Conversely, Lion -- by default, sans Java -- is significantly more resistant to the malware.
The Russian company's data also showed that many Mac users don't keep their machines up-to-date, something ZDNet blogger Ed Bott noted on Friday.
Twenty-four percent of the Snow Leopard-infected Macs were at least one update behind, 10.4% were three or more behind, and 8.5% were four or more behind.
Lion users were no better patch practitioners: 28% were one or more updates behind.

Lead Android developer thinks a five-month wait for an update is 'very reasonable' | The Verge
4 weeks ago by nicoladagostino
Queru actually thinks the five months it took Sony to update the tablet from 3.0 Honeycomb to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is "very reasonable," as the two Android versions are "quite different" under the hood. He also adds that the differences between Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich are huge, and so phone upgrades are likely to take longer. When asked why Asus updated its tablet much faster than Sony, Queru states that Asus worked together with Nvidia. Given the Transformer Prime's status as the flagship Tegra 3 tablet, it comes as no surprise that both parties would throw as many resources as they can at the tablet to ensure a timely update.
What really bothers Queru is that some Google-engineered devices still don't have the latest version of its own OS, thanks to delays in the carrier approval process. He's very glad that Google is back to selling devices directly, and will be "even happier" when he sees the program expanded to more countries.

Oracle finally releases first Java Developement Kits for Mac OS X | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence
5 weeks ago by nicoladagostino
When Apple confirmed in 2010 it would no longer be supporting Java for OS X it announced shortly after an agreement with Oracle to include OS X support in future versions of its OpenJDK Project, providing Java SE 7 implementation on Macs. Over a year later Oracle has now released Java SE 7 Update 4 and JavaFX 2.1, including the first JDK to land with OS X support (via MacRumors) [...]
Following the original announcement in 2010, Steve Jobs explained Apple’s process at the time of shipping a version of Java behind Oracle “may not be the best way to do it”. Of course in recent weeks Apple has patched several vulnerabilities in Java that have lead to an outbreak of malware on Macs. That vulnerability was patched by Oracle in February, months before OS X users received it.

Steve Jobs considered a free, ad-supported version of Mac OS 9 | The Verge
5 weeks ago by nicoladagostino
In his new book, Ken Segall says that Steve Jobs and his team at Apple explored the possibility of shipping a free, ad-supported version of Mac OS 9. Segall says Jobs was considering the option because of the profit potential inherent in selling software updates: "this is how Microsoft does it... it's like printing money," Jobs said. The plan was to give users a sixty-second commercial upon starting up the system that would be remotely updated by Apple, and to place ads elsewhere in the OS where they had the most relevance — like an Epson ad next to a system notice for low ink. He says that the team found the concept "financially sound," and that Steve was intrigued by the idea, but later "it appeared that too many negatives had come up" and it was killed.

Apple throws MobileMe users a free version of Snow Leopard to update to iCloud | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence
6 weeks ago by nicoladagostino
MacGasm reported that Apple is giving away free copies of Snow Leopard to MobileMe users to ease their move to iCloud. iCloud only works on Lion. Apple is offering MobileMe users without Snow Leopard a free copy, so they will pay $30 to upgrade to Lion. Once on Lion, they can ditch MobileMe to start using iCloud.
Apple posted a page where MobileMe users can register for their free copy of Snow Leopard. They had better act fast, because Apple is set to close the service in June to focus on iCloud in the future. iCloud plays a major role in Mountain Lion, which is currently seeded to developers for beta testing. Throughout the OS, there are several instances where iCloud becomes a very practical feature. Furthermore, I am sure you are all familiar with the iCloud integration throughout iOS. Expect iCloud to be a technology Apple is invested in for a long time to come.
Apple is essentially cutting behind users a $30 break. If you have not done so, it is about time to upgrade to Lion and join the roughly other 100 million iCloud users currently out there. What are you waiting for?

Nook Simple Touch multitouch hack turns e-reader into a monochrome $99 Android tablet | The Verge

To help make the [Nook] Simple Touch a bit better suited for traditional Android builds, xda-developers forum member wheilitjohnny has given the e-reader multitouch capabilities. Combined with the Nook's already-improved screen refresh rate and a "No Refresh" app that removes the black flashes used to clear the E Ink screen, the mod turns the e-reader into a somewhat ridiculous, possibly useful $99 monochrome Android tablet.

Improved Location Services Indicators
Apple has made a couple of small improvements to location services indicators in the Settings, Location Services screen that should help provide users with clearer information about exactly which apps and services are using location and when and how they are using it. Up until iOS 5.0.1, only a single type of indicator was available that simply indicated apps that had accessed the user’s location in the past 24 hours, often making it difficult to track down apps that were still currently tracking location data.
iOS 5.0.1 introduced a separate indicator to differentiate apps currently using location, which are now displayed with a purple location services icon beside the app. iOS 5.1 expands this with a new outlined location services icon to indicate which apps are registered for geofencing. Apps that use geofencing generally have a lesser impact on battery life. Further, geofencing apps tend to be slightly more innocuous from a privacy point of view as they have simply registered with an iOS process to be notified when you cross a certain virtual boundary (i.e. arriving at or leaving a location) as opposed to actively tracking your movements.
The status bar will also display the outlined geofencing indicator instead of the standard indicator if only geofencing apps such as Reminders are using location services.

iPads using iOS 6, high-res displays showing up in Ars server logs
12 weeks ago by nicoladagostino
Are employees at Apple already using the so-called iPad 3—possibly running iOS 6—to surf the Web ahead of its expected announcement on March 7? We're not sure, but the Ars magic 8-ball says "signs point to yes."
While digging through our logs in preparation for our monthly browser stat report, we found 346 (update: actually 365) visits from a device with a screen resolution of 2048x1536—the exact resolution rumored for the "retina" display in the next-generation iPad. Although a screen resolution by itself isn't much to go on, a quick search around the Web indicates that there are very few devices in current use that have this same resolution. (There is a $5,000 NEC display for medical use with that resolution.)

Panic Blog » About Gatekeeper

Apple went to considerable effort and expense to find a middle ground.[...]
I have a personal flaw in the form of a small conspiracy theorist who lives in my head. He worried that this may have been created as just a temporary stepping stone — like Rosetta for the Intel transition, or Carbon for the OS 9 to OS X transition — and that one day, the Mac App Store-only option might still be enforced.
But I can’t find it in me to disparage this goodwill effort that Apple has undertaken to not turn every third-party developer upside-down with regard to app distribution. To me it’s a great sign that they’re aware and at some level sympathetic to our concerns, while remaining committed to a high-security experience for users.
Further cementing this feeling is the fact that we were invited to a private briefing at Apple about Gatekeeper a week before today’s announcement. Cabel was told point-blank that Apple has great respect for the third-party app community, and wants to see it continue to grow — they do not want to poison the well. I think their actions here speak even louder than their words, though.
One worrisome rift
There remains one thing that is of concern to me. Despite these great strides forward, Apple is walking a dangerous line with regard to features that are only available to App Store distributed apps. The two most prominent examples are iCloud and Notification Center. Cabel asked Apple if, thanks to Gatekeeper and Developer ID, App Store-only features would be eventually be available to signed apps that were not distributed through the App Store. There was some shuffling of feet and a “we have nothing to announce at this time”. It didn’t sound particularly optimistic.
It would be a shame if this trend continues, as it creates an artificial gulf between App Store and non-App Store apps. For example, as things stand today, we won’t be able to offer iCloud syncing in, say, Coda 2, when you purchase it directly from us. Only App Store purchasers would get that feature. Making matters worse is Apple offers us no real facility to “cross-grade” you from a direct purchase to an App Store purchase, should you change your mind.
There’s no real engineering reason that I can think of for this. It seems marketing or money-driven, and I think it’s un-Apple-like to chase the money at the expense of user experience in that manner. We hope they change their minds about that particular facet.

Did your Mac make the Mountain Lion obsolescence list? | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
According to French-language site MacGeneration, any Mac sporting Intel’s sluggish GMA x3100 or 950 chip won’t be able to run Mountain Lion. While we’ve gone a long way since the GMA graphics, you probably have somewhere under your table or in the basement a legacy Mac which doesn’t have enough oomph for Mountain Lion. Anything older than the mid-2007 iMacs, early-2008 Mac Pros, early-2009 Mac minis and early-2009 Xserve gets left behind. The same goes for MacBooks based on any Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the original 2008 MacBook Air. Sorry folks, that’s the price of progression. In addition, the following platform changes may interest you…

Mountain Lion: Hands on with Gatekeeper | Macworld
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
Since the days of version 10.4, OS X has had a feature called File Quarantine, which checks apps before they run for the very first time. You most often encounter this feature when you download an app and run it for the first time—a dialog box appears informing you that it’s a file downloaded from the Internet, and asking for you to confirm that you do indeed want to run it. (This feature only works with files downloading by certain apps, including web browsers and email clients. A file copied from a USB drive or from a network volume doesn’t get checked.)
Gatekeeper uses this same feature. Instead of just asking you for permission to launch an app for the first time, Mountain Lion will check its security settings to see what sort of apps are allowed to launch. Located in the General tab of the Security & Privacy preference pane is a setting called “Allow applications downloaded from,” with three options:
Anywhere: This choice uses the same set of rules as every previous version of Mac OS X. If an app isn’t known malware and you approve it, it opens.
Mac App Store: When this choice is selected, any apps not downloaded from the Mac App Store will be rejected when you try to launch them.
Mac App Store and identified developers: This is the new default setting in Mountain Lion. In addition to Mac App Store apps, it also allows any third-party apps that have been signed by an identified developer to run.

Mac OS X — sorry, OS X — is going on an iOS-esque one-major-update-per-year development schedule. This year’s update is scheduled for release in the summer, and is ready now for a developer preview release. Its name is Mountain Lion.1
There many new features, I’m told, but today they’re going to focus on telling me about ten of them. This is just like an Apple event, I keep thinking. Just like with Lion, Mountain Lion is evolving in the direction of the iPad. But, just as with Lion last year, it’s about sharing ideas and concepts with iOS, not sharing the exact same interaction design or code. The words “Windows” and “Microsoft” are never mentioned, but the insinuation is clear: Apple sees a fundamental difference between software for the keyboard-and-mouse-pointer Mac and that for the touchscreen iPad. Mountain Lion is not a step towards a single OS that powers both the Mac and iPad, but rather another in a series of steps toward defining a set of shared concepts, styles, and principles between two fundamentally distinct OSes.

NeXT Computers :: View topic - Steve Jobs ThinkPad
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
I set up that ThinkPad for Steve and Avie. Specifically, it was first for Avie and then Steve used it in his presentation at Apple and later it was used to demonstrate the unreleased custom version of Openstep at MacWorld 1997.
Scott Forstall was not in a very good mood as I recalled when he showed up at the merging NeXT Professional Services with Apple Enterprise Support [later Apple Enterprise Technical Support -- still have my leather jacket] demanding his laptop.
It was after 8:00pm and I was spending extra time supporting customers when I got an earful about this laptop which was sitting on my desk and dropped off earlier asking me to install Openstep.
I was unaware of it's significance and later that it needed a custom build I didn't even know was ready to install.
When Scott calmed down and apologized he explained the situation.
I contacted my old colleagues in SQA and Mark Bessey, Ali Ozer and myself [Marc Driftmeyer] made it a night of pizza and custom installation debugging before we got this ThinkPad up and running.
We had to use unreleased device drivers for several aspects of the system, including networking support. Then once we figured out to get it up and booted, Ali who was head of AppKit at the time had to install his custom version of AppKit.
Once it was done and Avie got his laptop around 3 am for is 8 am presentation with Gil Amelio I got a pat on the back and a big thank you.
No freebies, just "thanks Marc you were a life saver."
We had a blast getting that little bastard to work.

Workarounds for quarantine bug in OS X Lion | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
[...] there appears to be a bug in the latest version of OS X Lion in which the quarantine flag is attached to existing files on the system, preventing some code such as user scripts from being executed. If you create shell scripts, for instance, then opening them in TextEdit and making changes to them will result in them no longer being executable and will result in an "Operation not permitted" error in the Terminal.
Some users have found that this problem happens even if you make edits but do not save the file, suggesting the problem could lie with the system's Autosave features. But if this were the case then it would happen to all programs that support Autosave such as Pages or other iWork programs, and that hasn't been reported happening, which suggests the problem is elsewhere.
After investigating the problem, I found it appears to only happen with Apple's sandboxed applications, such as TextEdit and Preview, suggesting the issue has to do with alterations to the sandbox rule configuration in the OS.

10.6: Make a universal 10.6.7 Snow Leopard installer - Mac OS X Hints
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
Why do we need this? Because Apple quit releasing full retail versions of Snow Leopard with 10.6.3. If you have an Apple computer made after the Core 2 Duos, the 10.6.3 retail disk may not boot, and the 10.6.0 version won't boot at all. Early 2011 MacBook Pros fall in this category. Version 10.6.7 was the last version released on DVD, but the DVDs were locked to specific machines. We are are going to unlock a 10.6.7 DVD and make it a universal Installer.

Apple intern's thesis leaks secret project to port Mac OS X to ARM processors
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
In 2010, Tristan Schaap published a Bachelor thesis on his 12 week stint as an intern with Apple's Platform Technologies Group, a subdivision of the Core OS department. The thesis was originally embargoed because it contained sensitive information, but it was eventually published by the Netherland's Delft University of Technology several months ago, as reported by iMore.
According to the paper, Schaap worked with the group to get Darwin, the "lower half" of Apple's Mac OS X operating system, to boot onto an ARM processor from Marvell. During the course of the project, he achieved his goal of "booting into a multi-user prompt," though some issues still remained due to a "poor implementation on the debug hardware."
It is, however, highly possible that Apple's explorations into porting Mac OS X to the ARM architecture were not meant to ever ship in an actual product. The company has been known to place new engineers on decoy projects in order to determine their trustworthiness.
But, it is interesting to note that, according to Schaap's LinkedIn profile, he joined Apple as a "CoreOS Engineer" after graduation and has worked there for almost a year and a half. His profile lists his 2009 intern position as an "Embedded Bringup Engineer."
Schaap wrote in his thesis that he faced three technical issues during the 12-week project. Having to create a build system, including a filesystem and kernelcache, from the ground up was one of the obstacles. A stale kernel source was also a problem, since bugs snuck in due to the ARMv5 branch of XNU not having been exercised "in a long time." Finally, Schaap said issues with the JTAG debugger resulted in an "entire instruction set" being unusable.
In order to get the product ready to ship, Schaap noted that the L2 cache would need to be reworked. Several more drivers would also need to be written for the hardware in order to "fully utilize the potential." Also, Schaap recommended that several applications be written or ported from other platforms since the userland the team had ported was "not enough to perform the tasks the unit needs to perform."

Updated UI resources in OS X 10.7.3 may hint at preparations for Mac Retina Displays
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
John Gruber of Daring Fireball on Monday pointed to a series of Twitter posts (1, 2) outing UI resources that scale to larger sizes in the latest release of Mac OS X Lion, which arrived last week.
The new elements include the pointing-finger cursor in Safari, the "grabby hand" in Mail, and the camera cursor for taking screenshots and a few others. One straightforward reason for the change could be that Apple wanted to improve the look of the Universal Access zoom feature. But, reports from some Mac Mini users outputting to HDTVs over HDMI that upgrading to 10.7.3 caused their system to reboot into HiDPI mode have added to the mounting evidence that Apple is planning for high-definition Mac displays.
Apple added HiDPI modes to Mac OS X Lion last year, but they were previously only accessible by installing Xcode. HiDPI is modeled after the UI resolution doubling that takes place on Retina Display iPhones.

Apple fixes Rosetta problems with new security update | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
When Apple released its security update for Snow Leopard in conjunction with the OS X 10.7.3 update, a number of people found that it broke the Rosetta dynamic translator that is required for running PowerPC applications on that version of OS X.
After updating, instead of loading and running properly applications would crash, not be able to save new files, and otherwise behave oddly, causing a number of people who still rely on older versions of popular applications such as Office 2004, Photoshop CS, and Quicken 2007 to no longer be able to do their work.
Immediately following news of these problems Apple began investigating the issue, and one user issued his own revisioner to address the problem until Apple was able to fix the problem.
As of now Apple has issued a new version 1.1 of the security update which supposedly corrects the problems in the first version. The new update is being pushed to Apple's update servers so if you have checked and do not see an update available then be sure to keep checking Software Update (in the Apple menu) until it shows up. So far the update has not been posted on Apple's support downloads page, but we expect it to soon be available there as well.
The update can be applied over the existing security update, but is a replacement for the original security update so if you have not already installed it then you can do so with this latest version and avoid the Rosetta bugs altogether.

Open webOS 1.0 announced: HP to complete webOS open sourcing by September, Enyo 1.0 and 2.0 code available today | The Verge
february 2012 by nicoladagostino
Following up on its December announcement that it would open source the platform — a last-ditch effort to make it viable — HP has gone into detail today on exactly when and how developers will be getting access to webOS code. The company expects the entire open sourcing process to be complete by September, while Enyo, the application framework that debuted on the TouchPad and underpins webOS 3.0, is available as of today along with related developer tools. When open sourcing is complete, the finished product will be known as Open webOS 1.0.
Additionally, HP is releasing a major refresh of Enyo, version 2.0, which starts to make good on HP's promise that it would continue to "be an active participant and investor in the project." Enyo 2.0's draw is that it's not tied to WebKit — it's fully browser-independent, which means you'll be able to write Open webOS apps that work in Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, and so on. The company says that by taking webOS beyond hardware and letting developers write apps that work natively in any browser, it helps build an ecosystem — and an ecosystem is exactly what the platform needs right now if it has any hope of succeeding.
Beyond today, HP expects major releases roughly every month for the next six or seven months, some of which will make some pretty significant changes to webOS's internals. The biggest might be the switch to the standard Linux kernel — a la Android — which will make it far easier for OEMs and developers to get the platform bootstrapped onto a wider array of hardware thanks to abundant driver availability. The company will be moving to the Apache 2.0 license wherever possible to ease and streamline development and deployment for third parties; HP says that "it provides a legal framework that balances open innovation and a dependable user experience, which is consistent with HP's vision for webOS."
As for existing hardware, it'll be possibly for developers to get Open webOS builds onto their TouchPads over the course of the year, but regular end users — those without hacking chops — can expect an update in "late summer." Surprisingly, HP says that it's "looking" at all webOS devices to see if, when, and how to make Open webOS available for them, so Pre, Pixi, and Veer users of all flavors should keep their hopes up.

I don't have ANY issues with Snow Leopard on my Mac mini 2011 quad server.
I am not convinced that using a retail disk is a good idea - when I have tried that in the past with other Macs it never got all the drivers and never added all of them after a Software Update either!
I used 10.6.8 (10K549) from my MacBook Pro (Early 2011), as it has exactly the same hardware as a quad-core mini. No boot problems with this, all drivers working good. I actually used carbon copy cloner to an SD card at first, and booted off that before I restored it to the mini server's second hard drive.
BUT there are serious performance issues, as Snow Leopard doesn't seem to speedstep the processor correctly with a machine identifying itself as being a Macmini5,x, so any of:
Macmini5,1 - dual core with Intel HD3000 graphics
Macmini5,2 - dual core with AMD graphics
Macmini5,3 - quad core i7 (server)
Basically to fix this you need to modify a kernel extension, and update the caches - You need access to a copy of Lion for this - I used the copy of Lion which came preinstalled on the second hard drive.
USING the Lion partition (either using Finder > Go to folder…, or by using the Terminal) you need to go to:
/System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources/
FIND Macmini5_1.plist, Macmini5_2.plist or Macmini5_3.plist (depending on your Mac mini 2011 model, or copy all of them if you aren't sure).
COPY these back to the the same location on your Snow Leopard partition.
REMEMBER, depending on how you copy the plist file(s) you may have to change ownership of the file(s). The plist file should be owned by root and the wheel group on Snow Leopard.
Using Terminal and Snow Leopard partition:
sudo su -
[enter your admin password]
cd /Sy*/Li*/Ex*/IOPla*/Con*/Pl*/AC*/Con*/Res*/
chown root:wheel Macmini5*
FINALLY, update the kernel caches using Terminal by typing:
kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
kextcache -system-caches
THEN, reboot your Mac mini!!

Whited00r Aims To Breathe New Life Into Old iOS Hardware
january 2012 by nicoladagostino
Whited00r is a custom version of iOS 3.1.3 meant for old-school iDevices: think 2G/3G iPhones and the original iPod Touches.
Despite being based on a very old version of iOS, the team beind the project managed to pack in many of iOS 5′s flourishes and features, from app folders and video recording to multitasking and reminders. Whited00r has been kicking around for a while as a beta, but a stable release was recently pushed out for Apple anoraks to play around with.
Sounds like a pretty good deal, no? Well, there are a few caveats that old-school iPhone owners will need to put up with, like the exclusion of notifications. Also missing is direct access to Apple’s App Store, although the Whited00r team has whipped up a few workarounds for that. Users can jump into the old jailbreak standby Cydia, although the community also has a curated portal of of apps known to work under Whited00r.
Installing Whited00r doesn’t require the iDevice in question to be previously jailbroken as it’ll do all the heavy lifting in that regard, but having previous jailbreak experience makes the process even easier. All it takes to get up and running is to sideload the custom firmware while in iTunes (much easier than it sounds), and that original iPhone of yours will be off to the races.

Nokia went and bought itself another mobile OS | Mobile - CNET News
january 2012 by nicoladagostino
The Finnish handset giant scooped up Smarterphone, a small Norwegian company that has an operating system designed for more basic cell phones, known in the industry as feature phones. The acquisition was disclosed by Smarterphone's Nordic investor parent, Ferd Capital.
A Nokia representative confirmed the acquisition but declined to comment further on what it means for the company.
This operating system would sit alongside Microsoft's Windows Phone platform, which is meant for high-end smartphones, and Nokia's own Symbian platform, which is now intended for lower-end devices and emerging markets. It's unclear where Smarterphone's operating system would fit in Nokia's product portfolio.
The Smarterphone operating system is designed to allow basic phones with lower-end hardware to feel more like smartphones, Ferd said. The software also allows the company to tailor the software to different markets.

H.P.’s TouchPad, Some Say, Was Built on Flawed Software - NYTimes.com
january 2012 by nicoladagostino
“Palm was ahead of its time in trying to build a phone software platform using Web technology, and we just weren’t able to execute such an ambitious and breakthrough design,” said Paul Mercer, former senior director of software at Palm, who oversaw the interface design of WebOS and recruited crucial members of the team. “Perhaps it never could have been executed because the technology wasn’t there yet.” [...]
Mr. Mercer was well known in the design world for his contributions to several of Apple’s most important products, and Palm recruited him. After some internal debate, the company chose to have WebOS rely on WebKit, an open-source software engine used by browsers to display Web pages. Mr. Mercer said that this was a mistake because it prevented applications from running fast enough to be on par with the iPhone. But a former member of the WebOS app development team said the core issue with WebOS was actually Palm’s inability to turn it into a platform that could capture the enthusiasm and loyalty of outside programmers. There were neither the right leaders nor the right engineers to do the job, said this person, who declined to be named because he still had some ties to H.P.
From concept to creation, WebOS was developed in about nine months, this person said, and the company took some shortcuts. With a project like this, programmers typically start by creating the equivalent of building blocks that can be reused and combined to create different applications. But with WebOS, Palm employees initially constructed each app from scratch. Later, they made such blocks, but they were overhauled once by Palm and then again by H.P., forcing programmers to relearn how to build WebOS apps.
Another issue was recruiting. In 2009, it was hard to find programmers who had a keen understanding of WebKit, Mr. Mercer said, and Apple and Google had already snatched up most of the top talent.

AppleInsider Samsung's TouchWiz preventing Galaxy S owners from getting Android 4.0 ICS
december 2011 by nicoladagostino
it's the addition of TouchWiz to Android that will keep popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy S from running Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," according to The Verge. Though the Galaxy S has a speedy 1GHz Hummingbird processor and enough memory for ICS, Samsung has revealed the software update won't be coming to that device, which sold more than 10 million units last year.
But the Galaxy S sports the same internal hardware as Google's Nexus S smartphone, and Nexus S owners can already obtain Android 4.0 through an over-the-air update.
"Samsung addresses that inconsistency by again pointing to the differing software provision; the Nexus S only has to run the basic Android OS, whereas the Galaxy S has to deliver TouchWiz, carrier services, video calling software, and, in some markets, mobile TV," wrote Vlad Savov.
That stands in contrast to Apple, which this year kept around its iPhone 3GS, first released in 2009, with a free update to iOS 5. Meanwhile, Android phones often ship with an outdated version of Google's mobile operating system, and the systems are also rarely updated, even during the original contract term of the handset.

iPhone OS 3.1.3 users unable to download new apps Apple - CNET News
december 2011 by nicoladagostino
Several users of the older OS have chimed in on Apple's Support Communities reporting that they can update existing apps and sync apps from iTunes to their phones, but they can't install new apps directly to their devices.
One commenter described the problem in part as follows:
Whenever I go into a specific app in the app store, none of the buttons work properly. 1) clicking on the price no longer downloads the app, 2) the ratings button does nothing, 3) the 'tell a friend' and 'git this app' buttons jump back to the top of the app window, 4) pictures usually don't show up...
The issue seemed to start around December 15 and apparently is still causing headaches.
The glitch affects both iPhone and iPod Touch units running OS 3.1.3 and, in some cases, earlier versions of 3.x.

HP’s Whitman: We’ll Make WebOS-Powered Tablets In 2013 | TechCrunch
december 2011 by nicoladagostino
“We are so excited about webOS and realized that the very best thing to do is to open source the technology, contribute to it and invest in it,” she explains to TechCrunch. “We will harness the power of the community to make this a better alternative to to other operating systems.”
HP said today that developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions of WebOS into the marketplace. HP also will contribute ENYO, the application framework for WebOS, to the community in the near future along with a plan for the remaining components of the user space.
You can see Whitman’s full memo to HP employees here.
So what about tablets and WebOS? Andreessen says that because of the open source model, we’ll have a future with webOS-powered tablets and says HP will be one of those companies that will develop webOS tablets. Whitman says this may not happen in 2012, but will probably take place in 2013. She alluded to this a few weeks ago but it is certainly interesting that HP is going to be developing future hardware products on the WebOS operating system.
UPDATE: HP wanted to clarify that Whitman said HP could make WebOS-powered tablets in 2013.
While we know that HP is ceasing development of WebOS in phones, it’s interesting that the company is continuing to bet on the OS in tablets.
In 2012, Whitman is planning for a Windows 8 tablet. “We’ll continue to invest in the existing tablet ecosystem” and in the near term “will bet heavily with Windows.”

webOS To Be Released as Open Source
december 2011 by nicoladagostino
HP has just announced it's going to release webOS under an open source license.
http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2011/111209xa.html?mtxs=rss-corp-news
While the company will cease making hardware for the platform for now, it will continue development on it together with the open source community. [...]
"webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable," said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer, "By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices."
The company presents four key points for the soon-to-be open source project - with a few deserved jabs at Google and Android, right there.
The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
Software will be provided as a pure open source project
While all this looks great, the question here is who would actually be using webOS. To me, it sounds like HP couldn't find a buyer, couldn't find a partner, and as a last resort, throws it out on the street hoping someone else will take it away.

Ice Cream Sandwich – from source code release to software upgrade — Developer World
december 2011 by nicoladagostino
In our pursuit for greater openness in the Android community, we would like to share some exclusive information of the different phases and activities of Sony Ericsson’s Android development, starting with the release of the Ice Cream Sandwich source code, and leading up to the release of a software upgrade for you to download on your phone. Find out more after the jump!
On the Sony Ericsson Product Blog, we have previously announced that all our 2011 Xperia™ phones will receive software upgrades to Ice Cream Sandwich (please check the Sony Ericsson Product Blog for upcoming announcements regarding the timing for these software upgrades). However, before we can roll out those software upgrades, there are a lot of activities to first of all get Ice Cream Sandwich to work and become stable on all Sony Ericsson phones. We call this the Bring up phase.
Secondly, and perhaps most important, we must certify and approve the new software release with all the different technologies, networks, and hardware that a modern smartphone should work with. We call this the Certification and approval phase.

Lime enjoys vastly improved hardware support compared to that of Vanilla. Here's a list of the improvements in hardware support:
Broadcom WiFi - BCM43XX
Ralink WiFi - RT24XX, RT28XX, RT30XX
Realtek WiFi - R8187SE, R8712U, RTL73, RTL8180, RTL8187, RTL8192XX
nVidia GPUs - 6 series and newer
PAE requirement removed
If you were one of the unlucky folks to have a device that didn't support a PAE kernel, you're in luck, this is no longer a requirement with Lime!
Extra plugins as standard!
Need your fix of Java? Java is now fully supported with Lime! More plugins coming very soon!
You decide what gets added!
These are just a few of the changes featured in Lime, but there's more! If there's a piece of hardware that we don't support where a Linux driver exists but isn't being shipped, let me know and I'll likely add it! Tweet me information regarding this.

Gingerbread owns Android market, but Ice Cream Sandwich awaits | The Digital Home - CNET News
december 2011 by nicoladagostino
As of yesterday, Gingerbread's many versions were running on 50.6 percent of all the Android devices in the wild, data published on the Android developers page shows. Android 2.2 (Froyo) trailed with 35.3 percent market share. The only other Android version with notable market share--Android 2.1 (Eclair)--captured 9.6 percent of the space during the 14-day period.
Honeycomb's various flavors, which are running on the majority of Android-based tablets, were only able to nab 2.4 percent share.
Gingerbread's rise has come quite quickly, considering the operating system debuted about a year ago. However, when compared to iOS 5, its adoption might seem rather slow.

Mozilla ponders demise of Firefox for Apple's Leopard - Mac software - Macworld UK
december 2011 by nicoladagostino
In a message Wednesday to a planning thread , Mozilla engineering manager Josh Aas proposed that the company pull the plug on Mac OS X 10.5 in six months.
"Maintaining Mac OS X 10.5 support consumes a non-trivial portion of the resources we have available for Mac OS X development," Aas said. "Not maintaining Mac OS X 10.5 support will allow us to devote more resources to the product as used by the majority of our Mac OS X users, those on Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7."
Citing Mozilla's own data, Aas said that 24% of active Mac Firefox users currently run the browser on machines powered by Mac OS X 10.5, aka Leopard. By June 2012, when Aas suggested support stop, Leopard users should comprise only about 13% of Mac Firefox users.
Aas also noted that Apple itself has halted support for Leopard; it released the last security update for the 2007 operating system last June, several weeks before the launch of Mac OS X 10.7, better known as Lion.
The last time Apple updated its own Safari browser for Leopard was July 20, when it released Safari 5.0.6.
Apple typically stops issuing security updates for an older edition of Mac OS X when there are two successors available.
If Aas' plan is adopted, Firefox 13, now set to ship June 5, would be the last to support Leopard.

iCloud Documents sync for Snow Leopard, using DropBox - Mac OS X Hints
november 2011 by nicoladagostino
What I did on my iMac running Lion is to link (with ln -s) the iCloud 'Mobile Documents' folder (in ~/Library) to my Dropbox folder with something like (substitute the actual user's short name for 'username' in the command):
ln -s /Users/username/Library/Mobile Documents /Users/username/Dropbox/iCloud
Then, on the MacBook Pro [which has Snow Leopard], the shared documents are available in the ~/DropBox/iCloud folder.
For example GoodReader on the iPad has iCloud support, so I can directly put PDFs from my MacBook Pro in this directory, and they appear directly in GoodReader. As soon as other iOS programs support Documents on iCloud, this will be extended to them as well.
You can also use this with iWork documents, but beware, make sure you put a copy of the documents from your OSX machine to iCloud, as reading them under IOS 5 changes the format irreversibly (for now).
Note: This of course requires your Lion machine to be on and connected.

AppleInsider | Microsoft to follow Apple's Lion lead with digital delivery of Windows 8
november 2011 by nicoladagostino
Much like Apple did with the release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion in July, Microsoft plans to make the simplest and easiest method of installing Windows 8 a download over the Internet.
Web delivery is one way that Microsoft is hoping to speed up and simplify the installation process with its forthcoming operating system release. In a post to the company's official blog this week, Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows Division, detailed the setup experience users will see with Windows 8.
Sinofsky explained that Microsoft aims to satisfy two distinct types of customers in the install process: those who want to install with minimum hassle, and those who want to do a clean install with more options, control and customization. Microsoft's simpler solution will allow users to simply launch a file that can be delivered via the Web, not unlike Apple's Lion, which is available for purchase and install through the Mac App Store.
"In the past, if you wanted to buy an upgrade for Windows, it involved purchasing a boxed product from a retail outlet, taking it home, (sometimes being infuriated while trying to open the box,) and inserting a DVD," Sinofsky explained. "However, buying boxed software is quickly becoming the exception rather than the rule, with more and more software being purchased online as broadband penetration increases and large-size media downloads become more common.
"While we will continue to offer boxed DVDs, we are also making it easier than ever to purchase and install online. This includes starting the setup experience online as well, and having one continuous integrated experience from beginning to end."
Microsoft's Web setup will allow the company to "pre-key" the setup image that is downloaded to a unique user. This means users won't need to enter the 25-digit product key that is currently necessary to install existing versions of Windows.
Sinofsky stopped short of saying that the Web install method will be the preferred way for users to install Windows 8, though the simplified process will likely make it ideal for most users. Through one application, Microsoft will scan a user's system for compatibility, download Windows 8, and then install the operating system.

Security firm lists 'Dirty Dozen' unsafe smartphones - Digital Lifestyle - Macworld UK
november 2011 by nicoladagostino
An advantage that Apple has over Android is that it can push updates to its software to all its smartphones simultaneously, he says. With Android, on the other hand, the manufacturers and carriers are responsible for pushing out updates.
"There's too many cooks in the kitchen," he says. "It's like buying a PC from Dell and expecting Dell and Comcast to be responsible for your Windows updates."
Sverdlove argued that all the players in the Android universe have to start thinking of smartphones as computers and not handsets. "There has to be some changes made to the ecosystem itself," he adds. "The manufacturers and carriers have to start relinquishing control of the operating system to the software vendors."

AppleInsider | Web stats indicate Mac OS X Lion still growing very fast
november 2011 by nicoladagostino
Contradicting a report by advertising network Chitika describing Mac OS X Lion as stagnating, web analytics firm Net Applications reports Apple's latest OS has already taken a 30 percent share of the active Mac installed base in just over three months.
[...] Net Applications monitors the use of web browsers reported by a wide network of web servers, and its data indicates that Mac OS X Lion has been and continues to steadily grow, having already reached a 30 percent share of all Mac users. That's more than the other variants of Mac OS X older than Snow Leopard combined.
Mac OS X Lion has already achieved a similar share among Mac users as Microsoft's Windows 7 has this year among PC owners, two years after its release.
Because all new Macs ship with Lion and can't be downgraded to an earlier version, the record numbers of new Macs sold can only force Lion's share higher. In its last quarter, Apple sold 4.89 million new Macs, greatly outpacing the individual users upgrading to Lion through the Mac App Store.

AppleInsider | OS X Lion growth stagnates at 16% Mac market share
november 2011 by nicoladagostino
The adoption rate of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion has seen a drastic slowdown after enjoying strong initial sales and is only running on 16% of Macs, giving it the third largest install base behind Snow Leopard and Leopard.
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is being run on 16% of all Macs after seeing a highly successful launch, but sales have slowed to a crawl, barely outpacing adoption of Apple's previous version Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard which is installed on 56% of Macs, according to a study by analytics firm Chitika.
When Apple's newest Mac OS X launched in July, it saw booming sales topping one million downloads on launch day, with Apple calling it the company's fastest-selling OS ever.
The new study shows that, until September, Lion sales were consistent, seeing a 4.05% monthly growth rate, though that has slowed to an average rate of 0.98% over the past two months.
In early October, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced during his company's iPhone keynote that Lion was its best-selling OS to date, with an adoption rate surpassing its predecessor Snow Leopard by 80%, netting over six million downloads. Cook went on to compare the launch of Lion with Microsoft's Windows 7, which he said took 20 weeks to reach 10 percent of the PC install base, a feat Lion accomplished in just two weeks.
"The once hyped OS X Lion is now in a state of arrested development; they’re growing, but not nearly at the rate newly released operating systems have grown in the past," writes Chitika's Ryan Cavanagh in the company's blog. "Historically Mac users are quick to adopt the latest Apple software, as in the case with our iOS5 report, leading us to believe there are some real issues preventing users from making the $29.99 upgrade."

Editorial: Fun with ‘fragmentation’ charts (or, why you shouldn’t be distracted by shiny objects) | Android Central
october 2011 by nicoladagostino
a chart that shows that every iPhone is on the latest version of iOS doesn’t tell the whole story. It doesn’t show that the original iPhone didn't get updated to iOS 5. It's been "fragmented" out. And it doesn't show that an iPhone 3G doesn’t run iOS 5 anywhere near as well as an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. And it doesn’t show that the iPhone 4 is lacking a major feature found on the iPhone 4S, the one that’s currently featured in commercials -- Siri. If that’s not “fragmentation,” we don’t know what is.
But Degusta’s chart doesn’t show that. It just paints the pretty picture that iPhones are updated, Android phones aren’t. That the vertically designed, Apple-controlled iPhones are updated, and Android phones -- which were designed with an entirely different implementation philosophy -- aren’t.
If you ignore the misleading chart and similarly misleading bullet points, Degusta’s conclusions mirror a lot of our own over the past couple of years. The updating of Android phones often is a crapshoot. But what we wrote recently remains true: Are you staying up nights waiting for an upgrade because you have just have to have to be on the latest version? If you’re reading this, then you might well be. Or you might have rooted and ROM’d by now. (And if so, good on ya!) The rest of world? The “normal” consumers? Not so much.

Life isn't fair; neither are OS updates -- why a recent study doesn't predict the future | Android Central
october 2011 by nicoladagostino
Not all phones are worthy of a major upgrade ...
We've said this before, and we'll say it again. You get what you pay for. And it's disingenuous to pretend that all phones are alike, that all are worthy of being upgraded to Froyo. All phones were not created equal. Should the Motorola Cliq or Devour have the same weight attached to it in ComputerWorld's "study" as the Droid in determining Motorola's responsibility (fiscal, moral or otherwise) in ensuring it's upgraded to Froyo? Absolutely not.
The phones in the "study" should be scaled by how likely one believes they are to be upgraded. No, that's not very objective -- but it's realistic. And it's what the carriers and manufacturers have to do. Life isn't fair, and neither are smartphone upgrades. That's actually the conclusion Raphael reaches, and it's something we've been saying for months. But why let common sense stand in the way of a pretty chart?

the understatement: Android Orphans: Visualizing a Sad History of Support
october 2011 by nicoladagostino
It appears to be a widely held viewpoint3 that there’s no incentive for smartphone manufacturers to update the OS: because manufacturers don’t make any money after the hardware sale, they want you to buy another phone as soon as possible. If that’s really the case, the phone manufacturers are spectacularly dumb: ignoring the 2 year contract cycle & abandoning your users isn’t going to engender much loyalty when they do buy a new phone. Further, it’s been fairly well established that Apple also really only makes money from hardware sales, and yet their long term update support is excellent (see chart).
In other words, Apple’s way of getting you to buy a new phone is to make you really happy with your current one, whereas apparently Android phone makers think they can get you to buy a new phone by making you really unhappy with your current one. Then again, all of this may be ascribing motives and intent where none exist - it’s entirely possible that the root cause of the problem is just flat-out bad management (and/or the aforementioned spectacular dumbness).

Jobs reportedly wanted Compaq to license Mac OS | Apple - CNET News
october 2011 by nicoladagostino
Ben Rosen, former chairman and chief executive officer of Compaq, said in a blog post that Jobs approached him in 1999 about licensing the Mac operating system. He recounts how he agreed to meet Jobs at Menlo Park, Calif., restaurant after Jobs called him and suggested they meet to discuss an "important matter:"

After we finished with the amenities and reminiscences, we got to the purpose of the meeting. Steve wanted Compaq to offer the Apple operating system on its PC line, adding to the Microsoft OS that had always been our sole OS. At the time, Compaq was the world's largest manufacturer of PCs. Our adopting the Apple OS would be seen as a feather in Apple's cap (and a pretty visible slap at Microsoft).
The catching up with Steve was fun, the food was great, but the OS idea never gained traction. Upon further analysis, it didn't make sense for either Compaq or Apple. Compaq wasn't about to declare war on Microsoft, our partner from our birth in 1982, and Steve had second thoughts about licensing their crown jewels.

Daring Fireball Linked List: Tony Fadell Statement Appended to Businessweek's Scott Forstall Profile
october 2011 by nicoladagostino
This statement from Tony Fadell was appended to Businessweek’s Scott Forstall profile late in the day:
That pretty much directly contradicts the story laid out by (anonymous) sources in the original story. Fadell has long been gone from Apple — no reason for him to speak up now other than that he wanted to.

“I inherited the competitive iPhone OS project from Jon Rubenstein and Steve Sakoman when they left Apple. I quickly shuttered the project after assessing that a modified Mac OS was the right platform to build the iPhone upon. It was clear that to create the best smartphone product possible, we needed to leverage the decades of technology, tools and resources invested in Mac OS while avoiding the unnecessary competition of dueling projects.”

AppleInsider | iOS chief Scott Forstall profiled as a 'maddeningly political' mini-Steve Jobs
october 2011 by nicoladagostino
In the end, Forstall is seen as an asset by many, though the magazine profiles him as a young Steve Jobs, "scorching the earth behind him while retaining a remarkable ability to come out ahead."
Jobs and Forstall were close, remarks the magazine's sources, with Jobs taking pride in the young executive. Forstall may be Apple's best hope at preserving the legacy of Jobs, and it's suggested that perhaps Jobs saw that as well. At Apple's World Wide Developers Concerence in June, Jobs referred to Forstall's software as the "soul" of Apple's products. Later in the keynote, Forstall detailed the latest version of iOS, and when passing by the late CEO as he walked off stage, the audience could hear Jobs say, "good job."

New iPod Nano Features Available to 2010 Model via Software Update
october 2011 by nicoladagostino
Whereas many had initially claimed the new iPod nano software would be exclusive to the latest nano model, Apple has made available a software update in iTunes that enables the latest functionalities on the 2010 iPod nano. The update can be installed now by iPod nano 2010 owners by checking for updates in iTunes, as shown below. Interestingly enough, the new navigation UI is optional and users can revert back to the old grid interface in the iPod’s settings.

AppleInsider | Apple erases emerging Mac OS X trojan via malware definition update
september 2011 by nicoladagostino
Chinese malware targeting Mac users wasn't actually functional, but Apple has squashed the exploit anyway by delivering a malware definition update that flags the Trojan Horse as being malicious when users try to open it. New malicious software reported by CNET this week has been added to Mac OS X's internal blacklist of known malware, erasing the threat even before its authors were able to get it to the point of actually functioning.
The described "Trojan-Dropper:OSX/Revir.A" was not yet functional, according to security software vendor F-Secure.
However, a report by MacRumors confirms that Apple has already distributed a new definition, which lets the operating system identify and warn users before they attempt to open it.

Gartner: Smartphone sales jump 74%, Bada beats out Windows Phone | VentureBeat
september 2011 by nicoladagostino
Microsoft continues to struggle with sales of phones using its Windows Phone platform, which was surpassed by Samsung’s low-end Bada platform.Samsung sold over 2 million Bada smartphones globally, while just 1.7 million Windows Phones have sold. [...] Google’s Android mobile platform saw the biggest gains overall from last year, jumping from 17.2 percent of the global smartphone market to 43.4 percent. Apple’s iOS also saw a minor jump from 14.1 percent to 18.2 percent of the market. Nokia’s Symbian platform was the biggest loser, dropping from 40.9 percent of the market last year to 22.1 percent, followed by RIM’s BlackBerry, which fell from 18.7 percent to 11.7 percent. [...]Bada’s overall market share jumped from .9 percent to 1.9 percent, but that’s still better than Microsoft’s take, which fell from 4.9 percent (mostly consisting of legacy Windows Mobile users) to 1.6 percent.
