Can You Say That in English? Explaining UX Research to Clients
«Clients want every activity they pay for to lead to a tangible result—a website that fulfills their business goals and satisfies their customers. But it’s our job to help clients understand that their proposed website’s overall success depends on the quality of input throughout the site design and development process, not the quantity of input.»

How to Keep Your Users Waiting
"Wait a minute. I mean, 20 seconds at least. Hold on... idea's almost here. Meanwhile, would you focus on the spinning circle I've included above and think happy thoughts?"

It's Trivial
"Regardless of what your feelings may be on StackOverflow in general, most visitors seem to agree that the user experience is smooth, from start to finish. They feel that they're interacting with a polished product. Even if I didn't know better, I would guess that very little of what actually makes StackOverflow a continuing success has to do with the database schema--and having had a chance to read through StackOverflow's source code, I know how little really does."

Modes, Quasimodes and the iPhone
"A mode is a user-changeable state that influences how a computer reacts to user input. For example, if the Caps Lock key is active, all letters typed by the user appear in upper case. If it is not active, letters appear in lower case. Whether Caps Lock is active or not is not immediately obvious to the user, which often causes people to accidentally activate Caps Lock. This, in turn, causes unexpected results when users start to type."

Know Who’s Calling: Tactile Design
"I generally keep my phone on vibrate; it’s less intrusive that way. Given a name, it’s not difficult to deduce its basic constituent phonemes (every text-to-speech program does it). Here’s the thought, have the vibrator buzz out the phonemes of the caller’s name. The name Alexis, would be “br br brrr” and Jenny would be “Brr brr”, and Dan would be “bRrr. Imagine it as the sound of trying to say someone’s name without opening your mouth, complete with pitch and loudness modulation (which can be controlled with vibration speed and strength)."

Pleasure and Pain
"Pretty much every single day I get a tweet, email, or in person request for information on how to get started in the field of user experience. I’ve recently had a few people reach out to me even asking me to mentor them throughout the process. Given that I often find myself repeating the same answers over and over again, I decided to put all of my resources in a single blog post so that folks could easily access a consolidated version of my advice."

The debate over page zooming vs. text scaling
"For me, at the core of this debate is a much bigger question: Is one site for all really feasible? Traditionally, I’ve believed it is. But increasingly I’m finding that it’s not always practical."

Will This Link Open a New Tab/Window?
"Ever clicked on a link and had a new window (or tab) unexpectedly open? Me too. It’s a minor frustration that I think adds up over time. And sure — there are plugins and settings which can help manage this process. But the out-of-the box experience seems to be missing something to indicate whether a link will open a new window/tab, rather than simply take you to a new page. A simple solution might be a custom mouseOver cursor indicating links that will result in new tabs/windows."

Skip
”You don’t need to waste your time watching this. I just did it because I thought it would be cool and didn’t have any better ideas for how to get your attention. The content is superfluous and I don’t care whether or not you actually see it. In fact, it will probably annoy you to sit through the whole thing, especially on repeat visits, so you may as well move on to the important stuff.”

The Look of a Loved Folder
"Computer interfaces usually present icons identically, which themselves are often gleeming like a freshly polished Porche showflow. The icons and graphics are so ‘clean’, so devoid of detail, that I wondered if us human-types were possibly missing out on subtle channel of information."

ignore the code
"Users have a mental model of how individual applications work. This mental model describes the internal logic the user assumes and expects from your application." Unless your app is revolutionary, you should be matching your users' mental models not upending them.
