A Liberal, Accurate Regex Pattern for Matching URLs
november 2009 by nathanperetic
«A common problem programming problem: identify the URLs in an arbitrary string of text, where by “arbitrary” let’s agree we mean something unstructured such as an email message or a tweet. I offer a solution, in the form of the following regex pattern.»

Microsoft's Competition for Windows 7
october 2009 by nathanperetic
"But so here’s a thought: What if the reason why most PCs are still running XP has nothing to do with whether Vista is “good” or “bad”, but rather is the result of indifference on the part of whoever owns these untold millions of XP machines, be they at home or in a corporate IT environment. I.e., that switching to Vista, regardless of Vista’s merits, seemed like too much work and too much new stuff to learn; that the nature of the PC as a universal commodity is such that most of them belong to people who value “old and familiar” more than “new and improved but therefore different”. If that’s the case, Windows 7 may not do any better than Vista. Perhaps Windows 7’s competition isn’t so much XP as it is apathy."

"For all the mistakes Palm made to get to that point, and they clearly made many, it’s quite possible that they have done everything right since then. They abandoned whatever then passed for their product plan. They hired Jon Rubinstein and gave him control over building a new hardware and software engineering division. They hired not just new engineers, but great designers and all sorts of other smart and talented people essential to building a world-class engineering, design, and developer culture."

"Apple started instead with the idea of a general-purpose pocket-sized networked computer. It no more has a single main purpose than a desktop PC has a single main purpose. Telephony is simply one feature among many, whereas on most other phones, the features are attached to the side of the telephone."
