Interviews: Devendra Banhart | Features | Pitchfork

Pitchfork: You have really big ears and thoroughly non-Catholic taste, and this shows in the artists you recommend, though sometimes you get grief for championing your friends.
DB: Vashti [Bunyan], on a very personal level. Her music saved my life in many ways. Her music provided very concrete things I didn't have that time. I'd go so far as to say it replaced a bed and food pretty much. Water and Vashti got me through some pretty tough times. So, I owe that to her because her music was so nourishing.
Pitchfork: I like that, despite your reservations, you're not afraid to engage with the mystical or spiritual side of things but you never do it in a super serious kind of way.
DB: I grew up around so much new agey stuff. Part of me takes it lightly because I'm so used to it. It was my parents. It wasn't some path I discovered and want to share with people. It's just been a very natural part of my life. There's humor to it and there's seriousness to it, too. It's all about sensitivity. If you have sensitivity then mysticism will be part of your life. It's a very beautiful thing and a very real thing but it's not something to not take seriously and it's not something to take seriously. It's something to engage in the moment. It's all kinds of variables. There's always so many colors, you know?

Welcome to MusicBrainz! - MusicBrainz
april 2009 by mwfogleman
MusicBrainz is a community music metadatabase that attempts to create a comprehensive music information site. You can use the MusicBrainz data either by browsing this web site, or you can access the data from a client program — for example, a CD player program can use MusicBrainz to identify CDs and provide information about the CD, about the artist or about related information. You can also use the MusicBrainz Tagger to automatically identify and clean up the metadata tags in your digital music collections

Human evolution and music | Why music? | The Economist
april 2009 by mwfogleman
The truth, of course, is that nobody yet knows why people respond to music. But, when the carol singers come calling, whether the emotion they induce is joy or pain, you may rest assured that science is trying to work out why.

The recording industry, no doubt gnashing its teeth at such research, will be even less pleased to note that it was all funded by Uncle Sam through a pair of National Science Foundation grants.

Stealing Music: Is It Wrong Or Isn’t It?
march 2009 by mwfogleman
Until it is, I refuse to feel guilty for downloading and sharing music. Every time I listen to a song, or share it with a friend, I’m doing the labels a favor. One that eventually I should be paid for. Until that day comes, don’t even think about trying to tell me that I’m doing something ethically wrong when it’s considered quite legal, with the labels’ blessing, in China.

Overcoming Bias: I'll Be Different
march 2009 by mwfogleman
A young colleague recently said he didn't want to end up like older folks he knew who didn't keep up with new music fashions. Some of us older folks suggested he probably would become like us, and would probably like it. He was horrified.
