Partial Magic in the Quixote | First Year Foundation
11 weeks ago by mwfogleman
Why does it disturb us that Don Quixote be a reader of the Quixote and Hamlet a spectator of Hamlet? I believe I have found the reason: these inversions suggest that if the characters of a fictional work can be readers or spectators, we, its readers or spectators, can be fictitious. In 1833, Carlyle observed that the history of the universe is an infinite sacred book that all men write and read and try to understand, and in which they are also written.

The Business Case for Reading Novels - Anne Kreamer - Harvard Business Review
january 2012 by mwfogleman
Over the past decade, academic researchers such as Oatley and Raymond Mar from York University have gathered data indicating that fiction-reading activates neuronal pathways in the brain that measurably help the reader better understand real human emotion — improving his or her overall social skillfulness. For instance, in fMRI studies of people reading fiction, neuroscientists detect activity in the pre-frontal cortex — a part of the brain involved with setting goals — when the participants read about characters setting a new goal. It turns out that when Henry James, more than a century ago, defended the value of fiction by saying that "a novel is a direct impression of life," he was more right than he knew.

Overcoming Bias: The Logical Fallacy of Generalization from Fictional Evidence
january 2009 by mwfogleman
When I try to introduce the subject of advanced AI, what's the first thing I hear, more than half the time?
"Oh, you mean like the Terminator movies / the Matrix / Asimov's robots!"
And I reply, "Well, no, not exactly. I try to avoid the logical fallacy of generalizing from fictional evidence."
Some people get it right away, and laugh. Others defend their use of the example, disagreeing that it's a fallacy. This issue comes up often, and I plan to refer people to this page; so the following post is a bit long...
