What Do Women Want? - Discovering What Ignites Female Desire - NYTimes.com
april 2009 by mwfogleman
“I feel like a pioneer at the edge of a giant forest,” Chivers said, describing her ambition to understand the workings of women’s arousal and desire. “There’s a path leading in, but it isn’t much.” She sees herself, she explained, as part of an emerging “critical mass” of female sexologists starting to make their way into those woods. These researchers and clinicians are consumed by the sexual problem Sigmund Freud posed to one of his female disciples almost a century ago: “The great question that has never been answered and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my 30 years of research into the feminine soul, is, What does a woman want?”

GizmoStyle // We Love The Web : Linux enters the I’m A Mac/I’m A PC row with ‘We’re Linux’
april 2009 by mwfogleman
We’ve all seen the various Mac v PC ads but no Linux ads as of yet. And why would we? - Linux does not have the bank balance to finance Hollywood style adverts - remember Microsofts Jerry Seinfeld ad campaign? $10 million for what? Well, that’s all about to change as Linux have announced five finalists who have made adverts for their ‘We’re Linux’ video campaign. I must admit, they probably aren’t TV ready…..yet. We’ll see what Linux decide to do when they announce the winner tomorrow (Wednesday evening Pacific Time). Here are the 5 videos:

Daring Fireball: Complex
april 2009 by mwfogleman
“A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. The inverse proposition also appears to be true: A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be made to work. You have to start over, beginning with a working simple system.”

G20: Did police containment cause more trouble than it prevented? | World news | guardian.co.uk
april 2009 by mwfogleman
The upshot of the ruling and the police's application of their "kettle" formula is that people thinking about embarking on demonstrations in the future may have to decide whether they want to be effectively locked up for eight hours without food or water and, when leaving, to be photographed and identified.

Congressman Ron Paul - Imagine - Texas Straight Talk
march 2009 by mwfogleman
Shutting down military bases and ceasing to deal with other nations with threats and violence is not isolationism. It is the opposite. Opening ourselves up to friendship, honest trade and diplomacy is the foreign policy of peace and prosperity. It is the only foreign policy that will not bankrupt us in short order, as our current actions most definitely will. I share the disappointment of the American people in the foreign policy rhetoric coming from the administration. The sad thing is, our foreign policy WILL change eventually, as Rome’s did, when all budgetary and monetary tricks to fund it are exhausted.

How to stop the drug wars | The Economist
march 2009 by mwfogleman
A calculated gamble, or another century of failure?
This newspaper first argued for legalisation 20 years ago (see article). Reviewing the evidence again (see article), prohibition seems even more harmful, especially for the poor and weak of the world. Legalisation would not drive gangsters completely out of drugs; as with alcohol and cigarettes, there would be taxes to avoid and rules to subvert. Nor would it automatically cure failed states like Afghanistan. Our solution is a messy one; but a century of manifest failure argues for trying it.

Digital Overload Is Frying Our Brains | Wired Science from Wired.com
february 2009 by mwfogleman
Wired.com: The subtitle of your book predicts a "coming dark age." Do you really believe this?
Jackson: Dark ages are times of forgetting, when the advancements of the past are underutilized. If we forget how to use our powers of deep focus, we'll depend more on black-and-white thinking, on surface ideas, on surface relationships. That breeds a tremendous potential for tyranny and misunderstanding. The possibility of an attention-deficient future society is very sobering.
