Focus on the User

How much better would social search be if Google surfaced results from all across the web? The results speak for themselves. We created a tool that uses Google’s own relevance measure—the ranking of their organic search results—to determine what social content should appear in the areas where Google+ results are currently hardcoded.
All of the information in this demo comes from Google itself, and all of the ranking decisions are made by Google's own algorithms. No other services or APIs are accessed.

Developer Creates Tool to Bring RSS Back to Twitter
may 2011 by minorjive
Earlier this month, entrepreneur and blogger Jesse Stay noticed that both Facebook and Twitter had completely removed support for RSS from of their websites. After much outcry from the tech community, Facebook relented and re-added an RSS link to Facebook Pages once again. Twitter, however, did nothing.
But now, one developer has taken it upon himself to build a tool that uses Twitter's API (application programming interface) to create RSS feeds. The code, called "Twitter API 2 RSS," is now available on GitHub here.

Umagram
march 2011 by minorjive
Here is your chance to spark a conversation with that Twitter acquaintance you’ve been wanting to meet or kick off your own group activity feed with some friends!
Consider it my gift to you, because I like you! Now you can enjoy personal messaging and group chats from your web-enabled phone, tablet or computer.
Here’s a quick explanation of how things work:
When you start a conversation, it gets its own unique, private URL on Umagram.com which you can comfortably share in public because only those who are part of the conversation will be able to access it. That is, if you send a message to @Billy and @Julia, I’ll know exactly who you’re talking about and only @Billy, @Julia, and you will be able to access that conversation. Even if Billy and Julia aren’t Umagram members, they’ll still be able to participate in the conversation as often as they’d like—for free.

Chirpstory Lets You Filter And Bundle Tweets Into Stories
december 2010 by minorjive
Curation, the concept of filtering and organizing online content to separate signal from the increasing noise in social media, is currently one of the most discussed buzz words in the web industry. The number of curation tools, however, is still (relatively) low: Storify, which launched during TechCrunch Disrupt, and Curated.by are probably the most prominent examples at this point.
Enter Chirpstory, a new and Twitter-focused curation tool, which lets you gather and share collections of tweets around a specific topic. Popular news items, events, or trends may see thousands of related tweets, retweets and spam posts in a matter of hours: Chirpstory offers a way to curate and “summarize” related tweets in the form of a continuous or thematic narrative.

8 Ways to Not Get ReTweeted
december 2010 by minorjive
Twitter is a social network that allows users to share brief, 140 character messages. Each time another user shares your message it is considered a ReTweet. ReTweets expand you reach as an individual or company and can contribute additional website traffic, subscribers and customers.
However, when you make the mistakes outlined in this post it can cause your content to be ignored and not get ReTweeted.

Snap Bird helps find old tweets and messages by going where Twitter Search can’t: months back
november 2010 by minorjive
Do you have a lot of Twitter followers? Do you receive a ton of messages? Are you a blogger? If you answered yes to any of those questions then probably use Twitter Search on occasion to look up replies, messages or mentions. However, the problem with Twitter Search is that it only allows you to go back 10 days. But what if you want to see what someone wrote to your 3 weeks ago?
Or how about 3 months ago?
Until now, you probably just searched page after page to find what you were looking for.
Well, this is where a little site called Snap Bird comes in to play.

On Twitter, Followers Don't Equal Influence - Research - Harvard Business Review
may 2010 by minorjive
Cha called her paper, "The Million Follower Fallacy," a term that comes from work by Adi Avnit. Avnit posited that the number of followers of a Tweeter is largely meaningless, and Cha, after looking at data from all 52 million Twitter accounts (and, more closely, at the 6 million "active users") seems to have proven Avnit right. "Popular users who have a high indegree [number of followers] are not necessarily influential in terms of spawning retweets or mentions," she writes.

How I post my iPhone photos to Flickr and Twitter | johnbiehler.com
april 2010 by minorjive
Thanks to a tip by Ianiv awhile ago, I’ve discovered a great way to post iPhone photos online very quickly and without a lot of effort. Sure you can simply email your photos to Flickr or post them to Twitter via Twitpic, but why not do both at the same time and with more control over the process and not have to double post photos to different services?
This requires a couple of apps to get working. First of all, you’ll need Mobile Fotos which is a great Flickr management app that has a number of features we’ll take advantage of. The app lets you view and manage your Flickr account from your iPhone much more so than the mobile Flickr web version. Unlike emailing your photos to Flickr, Mobile Fotos can upload your photos at the full resolution they were taken at.
You’ll also need a Twitter client for your iPhone…I use Tweetie but Mobile Fotos supports most of them. You’ll also need to setup both applications with their host APIs which is a painless process and only takes a couple of clicks to setup. The apps will walk you through the authentication process.

Three Reasons Why Nonprofits Should Give a Tweet Nonprofit Tech 2.0
january 2010 by minorjive
To date, successfully fundraising on Twitter has been elusive for most nonprofits. TipJoy had promise and buzz, but quickly shut down. TwitPay.me filled the void, but has received very little attention. Micr0-donations via PayPal just don’t seem to appeal to donors. Twonate has a different spin on Twitter fundraising by essentially managing pledges to donate via Tweets, but of all Twitter fundraising tools I have seen come and go over the last year, Give a Tweet by far has the most potential.

Twitter 2.0: API Rate Change Could Lead to a World of New Apps & Features
december 2009 by minorjive
Twitter's Director of Platform Ryan Sarver followed up on earlier public announcements this weekend with an email to developers explaining plans to raise the limit on the number of times an application can request information from Twitter for a single user to 10 times what it is today (from 150 req/hr to 1500/hr) and to offer everyone the same kind of paid access to the full "fire hose" of user updates that Google and Bing enjoy. People who build cool Twitter apps say this is very big news.

The Great Location Land Rush Of 2010
december 2009 by minorjive
I’m sure some of them would counter that because location data is fairly standard right now, and moving easily between services, all of them will win. But that’s not true either. While location, as a whole, will win, there will be individual companies that end up ahead of others in the space. More to the point, there will be one or two services that people will go to for their social location data. That’s what we’re moving towards. And the bigger companies are starting to realize it. That’s why today we saw what may be the first maneuver in an upcoming rush to secure the location landscape, with Twitter snatching up Mixer Labs, the team behind GeoAPI.

november 2009 by minorjive
Today, during the Filtering the Stream roundtable at our RealTime CrunchUp, Seesmic’s Loic Le Meur asked why Facebook isn’t giving third parties access to their Friend Lists. Obviously, that’s a good question now that Twitter has starting giving third parties access to its Lists feature via an API. 10 Ways to Archive Your Tweets
august 2009 by minorjive
Did you know that your tweets have an expiration date on them? While they never really disappear from your own Twitter stream, they become unsearchable in only a matter of days. At first, Twitter held onto your tweets for around a month, but as the service grew more popular, this "date limit" has dramatically shortened. According to Twitter's search documentation, the current date limit on the search index is "around 1.5 weeks but is dynamic and subject to shrink as the number of tweets per day continues to grow."
