Supermechanical : Twine - Listen to your world, talk to the Internet
january 2012 by minorjive
Want to hook up things to the Web without a nerd degree? Maybe you want to get a tweet when your laundry's done, or get an email when the basement floods while you're on vacation.
Twine is the simplest possible way to get the objects in your life texting, tweeting or emailing. Instead of worrying about wiring or networking code, you can focus on your idea. A durable 2.5" square provides WiFi connectivity, internal and external sensors, and two AAA batteries that keep it running for months. A simple web app allows you to quickly set up your Twine with human-friendly rules — no programming needed.

Operation Leakspin
december 2010 by minorjive
To improve the quality of the reports, we have chosen to introduce a concept of 'crowd-journalism' as a subform of crowdsourcing. Reports have to be posted, reviewed and if necessary corrected on the Quality Control System. This will lead to an enormous advantage over conventional journalism. The goal is to give everybody the possibility to get involved to bring success with the possibility of a totally independent reporting. More information concerning this simple but effective crowd-journalism system can be found here.

The Curated Web | The American Prospect
august 2010 by minorjive
At its best, Tumblr is a sort of modern-day zinemaking. Zines, self-published do-it-yourself magazines (often featuring photos and text cut from other magazines and photocopied) with limited distribution, have always been a part of underground culture, both as a product and as a galvanizing part of the community. As in the zine world, activists and weirdos alike thrive in their Tumblr microcommunities, posting photos of signs that read "Feminism Is for Lovers" or collages of child stars. Blogs have been accused of killing off zines (though they are still being produced), and tumblelogs seem to channel the spirit of zines more so than any long-form blog.

In an ironic twist of fate for 2009, Fox's IGN Entertainment, a company known for its game reviews of products like Zombie Apocalypse acquired What They Play. The newest member of Fox Interactive is touted as the "family guide to video games" and offers reviews, warnings and suggested products. Under the umbrella company of What They Like, What They Play uses the "Entertainment Software Rating Board" (ESRB) to warn parents of games containing explicit lyrics, cartoon violence and drug references.

The iPhone Becomes a Web Server - ReadWriteWeb
february 2009 by minorjive
When those Apple advertisements tout "there's an app for just about anything," they aren't kidding. The latest example? A new iPhone application which just debuted in Japan's App Store transforms the handheld into a full-blown web server. Called "ServersMan@iPhone", the application allows your iPhone to appear just like any other web server on the internet.

BookBlog: Social Software: What's New (Adina Levin)
october 2004 by minorjive
The question underlying Chris Allen's valuable essay on the history of social software is, why do we need a new term? Is there anything new going on, or there just a new generation of people discovering the same old thing, like each generation of teenager
