When’s the Best Time to Publish Blog Posts?
december 2010 by minorjive
Of all the data analysis that I’ve done, day-of-week and time-of-day data has been consistently the most popular. So in preparation for my upcoming webinar, titled Science of Blogging, I decided to combine all of my existing data on timing with my new research into one master post on the subject.

WordPress and Drupal: Convergence?
october 2010 by minorjive
I’ll admit that I’m still not terribly familiar with actually using Drupal, though I did finally install D7-alpha-6 on my laptop recently. But I have had the opportunity to observe its community some — online, in person, and through podcasts — and I’ve learned a little bit about how they manage the release of a new version. And so I have a pretty good perspective on comparing some traits the WordPress and Drupal communities. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: there is a lot we can learn from each other, and I think that it is a win-win for the community in doing so.

The Curated Web | The American Prospect
august 2010 by minorjive
At its best, Tumblr is a sort of modern-day zinemaking. Zines, self-published do-it-yourself magazines (often featuring photos and text cut from other magazines and photocopied) with limited distribution, have always been a part of underground culture, both as a product and as a galvanizing part of the community. As in the zine world, activists and weirdos alike thrive in their Tumblr microcommunities, posting photos of signs that read "Feminism Is for Lovers" or collages of child stars. Blogs have been accused of killing off zines (though they are still being produced), and tumblelogs seem to channel the spirit of zines more so than any long-form blog.

A Brief History of 9 Popular Blogging Platforms
august 2010 by minorjive
The beginnings of blogging was a time not unlike today: Plaid was in style, a beloved rock star had passed, and the Internet was just gaining momentum on college campuses. In 1994, then Swarthmore College student Justin Hall started an online diary called Justin’s Links from the Underground. The site, which first started as a guide to the web, soon became an account of Hall’s life, and earned him the surely coveted title of pioneer blogger. Three years later, Jorn Barger would coin the term “weblog,” and it’s short form, “blog,” was later coined by Peter Merholz.

Surprise: Traditional Blogging Platforms Still Reign Supreme
may 2010 by minorjive
A report published today by data analysis service Postrank concludes that legacy-hosted blog platforms are still far ahead of much-hyped microblogging services like Tumblr and Posterous in terms of reader engagement. This despite the fact that you don't hear about people using Blogger and Typepad much anymore in early-adopter circles.

Publishing Google docs to your blog at bavatuesdays
january 2010 by minorjive
Yesterday, while showing a professor Google Docs, I discovered a feature I hadn’t seen before: the “publish to blog” option (not unlike the same feature in Flickr and del.icio.us and, from what I now understand, was also available with Writely). I wanted to test it out, so this morning I tried pulling in the outline of a presentation I will be doing with Jerry and Andy at ACCS this Friday in order to see how clean it is — let me tell you something, it is very clean!

WordPress Backup Plugin for Themes, Plugins and Uploads | (Anti) Social Development
march 2009 by minorjive
WordPress Backup is a new plugin that will backup your themes, plugins and uploads directories. You can schedule the backups in three intervals; hourly, daily and weekly. (Can anyone tell me why you would need an hourly backup?) The backups can be emailed to you, if the files aren’t too large. Links are also provided on the plugin’s options page, which provides a simple click to download right from the WordPress admin. Two of the three were emailed to me when I tested the plugin; themes and plugins. Apparently the Uploads backup was too large so I downloaded it with the provided link - the file was over 19MB. (I definitely need to examine what I have stored in there.)
