Essential Software For Bloggers : Text Expanders (Video Tutorial) - Wandering Minds - Wandering Minds
Yes, the phrase ‘text expander’ may sound as boring as mud, but as a blogger and regular computer user I maintain that text expanders are essential bits of software for anyone who spends more than an hour a day typing in to the computer and in the video below I’ll attempt to show you why. A good program, like TextExpander for the Mac will be intuitive and easy to master, and with very little set up it can save you hours of toi

Keyboard Maestro Zip and Share [Link]
I’m just catching up on my Keyboard Maestro reading. There’s some good stuff happening with it these days. Eugene Gordin has been evolving some really nice macros to fit some unique use cases. This one zips a group of files and shares them on Dropbox for a limited time. Hazel does some file clean up at a set interval to remove the shared files. A really nice way to do it. Scribe – Outlines With A Little Extra
As a writer about Mac, iPhone and iPad applications you sometimes think you’ve seen it all, apps being very similar, especially when they perform basically the same tasks. I should know better – it’s the details that can make all the difference and I tried to highlight that fact in an article I wrote a couple of weeks ago in which I compared five outlining apps for Mac.

Tictoc: Simple Time Tracking In Your Menu Bar
Keeping track of the time you spend during certain activities can be useful for many reasons. The most obvious one that comes to mind is if you are a freelancer that needs to bill by the hour, and therefore need some proof of how much time you spent doing certain tasks. But that’s certainly not all, even if you don’t charge by the hour, it’s still useful to know how much time you’re spending doing certain tasks so that you can then refine your workflow or be aware of how much time you are investing (or wasting).

Use Hazel To Magically Process Downloaded PDFs | Tips To Learn How To Go Paperless | DocumentSnap Paperless Blog
You know how sometimes you come across a tip that is so clever you are both happy to have learned it and annoyed that you didn’t think of it yourself at the same time?

That’s how I felt sitting in Katie Floyd’s Going Paperless presentation at Macworld 2011 (more on my Macworld roundup here).

It is well known that I love a little Mac app called Hazel that allows you to create rules to perform almost any function on your computer. One great use of Hazel is to move all the PDFs that you are downloading from the web now that you are going paperless.

Katie’s tip is to use the Source URL of the downloaded PDF as a basis for doing the processing. Brilliant! Have no idea what on earth I just said? No worries, I’m about to go through it.

12 Popular Mac Apps You Can Sync via Dropbox (& Instructions!) | Mac.AppStorm
This post is part of a series that revisits some of our readers’ favorite articles from the past that still contain awesome and relevant information that you might find useful. This post was originally published on April 5th, 2011.
Dropbox is one of those tools that spends most of its time sitting in the background, and yet has become an essential app for users on just about every platform. Dropbox as cloud storage, as a syncing solution, and even as a way to host a website is an incredibly useful tool.
That utility isn’t lost on app developers. Software that works with Dropbox is springing up everywhere — sometimes as a built-in function, and other times as a user hack. Either way, it makes life among many gadgets easier to have certain files accessible anywhere, anytime.
Here are some apps that you can start using to take advantage of cloud storage even more.

Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
To use a keyboard shortcut, or key combination, you press a modifier key with a character key. For example, pressing the Command key (the key with a symbol) and the "c" key at the same time copies whatever is currently selected (text, graphics, and so forth) into the Clipboard. This is also known as the Command-C key combination (or keyboard shortcut). A modifier key is a part of many key combinations. A modifier key alters the way other keystrokes or mouse clicks are interpreted by Mac OS X. Modifier keys include: Command, Control, Option, Shift, Caps Lock, and the fn key (if your keyboard has a fn key). Here are the modifier key symbols you can see in Mac OS X menus: (Command key) - On some Apple keyboards, this key also has an Apple logo () (Control key) (Option key) - "Alt" may also appear on this key (Shift key) (Caps Lock) - Toggles Caps Lock on or off fn (Function key)

The cloud-centric Mac set-up: 8 months on » Blog » Elliot Jay Stocks
Recently, quite a few people have been asking me how I’ve been getting on with my MacBook Air and iMac set-up, which I got about eight months ago after blogging about my plans for ‘a cloud-centric Mac set-up’ way back in April last year. In short: I couldn’t be happier. If you’re thinking of doing the same or simply want to read a bit more about this set-up, read on…
THE DEFINITION OF THE CLOUD
When we say ‘the cloud’, we tend to think of Dropbox, and whilst it’s true that Dropbox is very much the key to keeping my two Macs in sync, there’s more to it than that. The thing that many people forget is that we’ve actually been living in the cloud — to some degree — for quite some time: IMAP email, for example, is one of the oldest and most common examples of data being stored on servers to allow access from multiple devices. So if you’re thinking of going to a two-or-more Mac set-up, you’ll be pleased to know that you’re already a fair way there. (Unless you’re using POP3, of course, in which you case you really need to get out of the 16th Century.)

All-in Yoga: Your At Home Yoga Companion | Mac.AppStorm
I don’t think we can necessarily say something like "yoga is all the rage these days" anymore, but it is safe to say that yoga has become a fairly steady, mainstream workout activity for many people.
We have resources all around us and make no mistake about it, there are plenty covering the wide variety of yoga disciplines. And as you would have guessed, the next progression is to venture into applications. There are many applications that are available on multiple platforms that either walk you through a yoga workout or help to teach you yoga. I searched for one in this category and decided to give All-in Yoga a try.
I’ve had a bit of an interest in learning more about yoga for quite a few years. I’ve tried a couple books and wandered the Web for information, but I’ve come to realize it’s not an easy thing to actually learn on your own without little guidance. Many people turn to classes for this, but my situation hasn’t always made that option a possibility. Being the Mac nerd that I am my next logical place to look is the App Store.

Time Sink · Many Tricks
It's all about your time
Time Sink tracks the time you spend in the Mac programs—and their associated windows—as you use your Mac. It does this automatically, so you can go about your work without even thinking about Time Sink.

A table-style view (top left image above) shows usage for both foreground and total time, and can be easily sorted by name, foreground time, or total time.

A report-style view takes that same information and presents it graphically, for an easy at-a-glance view of your activity.

This report can be grouped by usage (as in this page's top right image), or showing natural foreground/background usage patterns over time, as in the below screenshot.

Usher · Many Tricks
Wouldn't it be great if there were a tool that could manage your videos and movies as well as Apple's iTunes and iPhoto manage your music and your photographs? Now there is. Meet Usher, your personal movie assistant.

Find and Manage Everything

Usher is the ultimate movie and video assistant because it can see and manage pretty much everything:

Usher can manage the videos you keep on your hard drive, and it will do so even if you don't want to move your videos and movies into Usher's library—it's your choice as to whether or not Usher moves things into its library, or just helps you manage your collection in place.

Usher can see videos stored in iTunes, iPhoto, and Aperture, providing easy management for these collections. You can add details to these videos, and then use Smart Playlists (as in iTunes) to quickly filter your collection on those details.

Usher also includes search-and-download capabilities for both YouTube and Vimeo1. Downloading your favorite video is now as simple as running a search (or entering its URL), and then letting Usher do all the heavy lifting—Usher can even auto-convert these downloads for use with the iPhone, iPod, and Apple TV, and copy them to iTunes.

Using TextExpander and OmniFocus for tracking... | Simplicity Is Bliss
Using TextExpander and OmniFocus for tracking actions & projects

In this short screencast I am demonstrating how I use TextExpander inside of OmniFocus to track projects, which I have delegated and where I don’t want to track individual actions.

Basically all these projects are tracked as individual entries in a Single Action List called ‘Delegated Projects’ and I use the note field and TextExpander to capture easy to read status updates. I get these updates either through weekly status calls or meetings I have with the project owners or via email.

Whenever I am asked to provide an update myself or meet anyone associated with the project, I can quickly and easily engage on the subject.

I also use TextExpander to capture single Waiting For actions I record during meetings or calls. TextExpander helps me to reduce the time and the typing required to capture these while I still want to follow and remain engaged in the conversation. Querying my Twitter followers that seems to be the most common use case amongst them as well

Rubicode - RCDefaultApp
RCDefaultApp is a Mac OS X 10.2 or higher preference pane that allows a user to set the default application used for various URL schemes, file extensions, file types, MIME types, and Uniform Type Identifiers (or UTIs; MacOS 10.4 only). MacOS X uses the extension and file type settings to choose the application when opening a file in Finder, while Safari and other applications use the URL and MIME type settings at other times for content not related to a file (such as an unknown URL protocol, or a media stream).

RCDefaultApp also allows setting the application when digital cameras or FireWire webcams such as iSight are connected to the computer. For completeness' sake, there are also settings that mimic the existing "CDs and DVDs" preference pane, which allows setting the action to take when various types of CDs and DVDs are inserted into the computer.

Finder's Get Info panel can be used to set the default application for file extensions and file types, but it's not intuitive. Apple's Internet preference pane in MacOS X 10.0 through 10.2 (Jaguar) allowed you to set the Web and Email applications, but no other URL handlers. In MacOS X 10.3 (Panther), these settings have moved to Safari's and Mail's preferences — meaning you have to run those applications if you want to choose to not use them. Similarly, the digital camera preference is located in Image Capture's preferences, and the webcam preference is a checkbox in iChat's preferences. RCDefaultApp allows the setting of all of this information, and ties everything together in one preference pane.

RCDefaultApp also allows entries to be disabled, such as URL schemes that have security issues ;-)

Platypus | Sveinbjorn Thordarson
Platypus is a developer tool for the Mac OS X operating system. It can be used to create native, flawlessly integrated Mac OS X applications from interpreted scripts such as shell scripts or Perl, Ruby and Python programs. This is done by wrapping the script in an application bundle directory structure along with an executable binary that runs the script.

Platypus makes it easy for you to share your scripts and programs with those unfamiliar with the command line interface, without any knowledge of the Mac OS X APIs -- a few clicks and you will have your own Mac OS X graphical program. Creating installers, maintenance applications, login items, launchers, automations and droplets is very easy using Platypus.

Supports shell scripts, Perl, Python, PHP, Ruby, Expect, Tcl, AppleScript or any other user-specified interpreter
Can execute scripts with administrator privileges via Apple's Security Framework
Can display graphical feedback of script execution as progress bar, text window with script output, droplet, WebKit HTML rendering or status item menu
Dragging and dropping files or text snippets on application, which are then passed to the script as arguments
Can create applications which run in the background (LSUIElement)
Set own application icon or select from presets
App bundle configuration for associated file types, identifier, version, author, etc.
Graphical interface for bundling support files with script
Command line tool for automating script application bundling and integrating platypus into your build process
"Profiles" which can be used to save configurations
Built-in script editor, or linking with external editor of choice
Extensive documentation and many built-in examples to help you get started.

Sven Fechner’s Writer Workflow « Macdrifter
Sven Fechner is the force behind SimplictyIsBliss.com and one of the biggest evangelists of OmniFocus next to Ken Case. I am a regular reader because he says smart things and provides keen insight. He understands his simple set of tools and shares his discoveries in succinct posts. Sven doesn’t post about the latest cool apps or cute “tricks.” He writes about solving real problems with basic tools.
He’s currently working on a new OmniFocus book that I am anxiously awaiting. Based on how he uses OmniFocus, it’s guaranteed to be a valuable addition to my library.

Automatically import smaller iPhone 4S movies | Macworld
I’m enjoying my new iPhone 4S but I’ve found that when shooting movies it captures files at 1080p, producing big files. After downloading these movies to my Mac I often want to post or email them. I find converting them to a smaller size a bother. Is there an easy way to do that?

There is. And the avenue to that easier way is Automator. Try this:

Focus: Turn a Good Photo Into an Amazing Photo | Mac.AppStorm
In the past two years, we’ve seen a lot of specialized photo manipulation apps enter the scene. Apps like Analog, Flare, and Instagram allow people to apply filters that recolor or add texture to photos. Focus is a photo manipulation app as well, but its specialty lies in creating unique blur effects in photos.
Cameras that have an adjustable lens allow you to change the focus of a photo, blurring objects at different distances. However, if your digital camera doesn’t have the ability to change the lens focus, or if you just took a photo without focusing it well, you might feel the need to give photos that effect manually. Read on to see what Focus has to offer.

Apple - Batteries - Notebooks
With a little bit of care, you can maximize the battery life (i.e. the time your battery will run before it must be recharged) and lifespan of your notebook's battery. Most importantly, use your Apple notebook in its comfort zone for temperature (See “Notebook Temperate Zone”). Don’t leave it locked in a hot trunk during the summer.

Choosy - A smarter default browser for Mac OS X
Forget the default browser, Choosy opens links in the right browser. When you click on a link Choosy will do the right thing, whether that's something simple (like using whatever browser is already running) or something complex (like prompting you to pick a browser, but only when you hold down the shift key and click on a link to google.com).

Spectacle: Snap App Windows To Screen Edges, Manage Workspace [Mac]
Managing multiple windows in Mac OS X Lion is done primarily using Mission Control, where you can create different desktops and assign the windows you have open to each one, according to what you’re working on. It is somewhat equivalent of working with multiple monitors, except that you don’t have all your screens displayed at the same time, and you have to swipe through to get to them. When it comes to managing display space on a single screen, it takes a lot more effort to keep things organized. Spectacle  is a Mac app that allows you to snap windows to one of four quadrants of the display, one of three parts of the height of the screen, and lets you switch to full screen, all using hotkeys.

The app comes with pre-defined hotkeys and runs unobtrusively in the system menu bar. To view and edit the hotkeys and set the app to start at system login, go to the app’s preferences.
