DIY: How to write a book - Boing Boing
4 weeks ago by milo
Ed Note: one of Boingboing's three current guest bloggers, Steven Johnson is the author of six books, most recently The Invention Of Air: A Story of Science, Faith, Revolution and the Birth Of America. (You can see a video interview introducing the book here.) He's also the co-founder of the hyperlocal community site outside.in.
In part because my books have had a habit of weaving multiple disciplines together, and in part because I've written quite a bit about technology, I'm often asked about the tools I use to research and write my books. Given that Boingboing has its own wonderful multi-disciplinary sensibility, and of course a major obsession with DIY movements, I thought it might be fun to say a few words about the writing system I've developed over the past few books.

Fortyish, newly divorced, searching and longing for something different. Something fulfilling and exciting, somewhere far outside my ordinary comfort zone.
Come with me on my journey of discovery. Explore with me. Touch, taste and feel with me.
Lots more to come following my introduction to you in this first volume of a multi-part True Romance / Erotica series.
“Perhaps I was being picky, but I really didn’t think being able to spell orgasm without being spotted a vowel was asking too much.”
Approximately 6,000 words – this first volume introduces the main characters and how they met.
This first volume of my sexual self-discovery is the mere beginning of a sensual, sultry love affair with life, and with all the joys of being a woman.

McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: The Ultimate Guide to Writing Better Than You Normally Do.
6 weeks ago by milo
Writing is a muscle. Smaller than a hamstring and slightly bigger than a bicep, and it needs to be exercised to get stronger. Think of your words as reps, your paragraphs as sets, your pages as daily workouts. Think of your laptop as a machine like the one at the gym where you open and close your inner thighs in front of everyone, exposing both your insecurities and your genitals. Because that is what writing is all about.

Reading list
Inspired in part by Apprenticeship Patterns, I’ve decided to maintain a public reading list. The goals are pretty simple:
Be honest about what books I’ve read, partially read, and plan to read.
Write a few sentences about each book – mostly for myself but also for anyone who might be interested.
Only include books related to development, user experience design, and entrepreneurship.
Include screencasts as well since that’s how I do much of my learning.
Note that many of these entries were written long after having read the actual book. I apologize for any inaccuracies. Also, the completion dates are often rough approximations.

New Year's Resolution Reading List: 9 Essential Books on Reading and Writing | Brain Pickings
march 2012 by milo
Dancing with the absurdity of life, or what symbolism has to do with the osmosis of trash and treasure.
As far as New Year’s resolutions go, hardly anything does one’s mental, spiritual, and creative health more good than resolving to read more and write better. Today’s reading list addresses these parallel aspirations. And since the number of books written about reading and writing likely far exceeds the reading capacity of a single human lifetime, this omnibus couldn’t be — shouldn’t be — an exhaustive list. It is, instead, a collection of timeless texts bound to radically improve your relationship with the written word, from whichever side of the equation you approach it.

Infovore » A Year of Links
february 2012 by milo
Wait. I lied. I didn’t make eight books. I made n books. Or rather: I wrote a piece of software to ingest an XML file of all my Pinboard links (easily available from the Pinboard API by anyone – you just need to know your username and password). That software then generates a web page for each book, which is passed into the incredible PrinceXML to create a book. Prince handles all the indexing, page numbering, contents-creation, and header-creation. It’s a remarkable piece of software, given the quality of its output – with nothing more than some extended CSS, you end up with control over page-breaks, widows and orphans, and much more.
The software is a small Sinatra application to generate the front-end, and a series of rake tasks to call Prince with the appropriate arguments. It’s on Github right now. If you can pull from Github, install Prince, and are comfortable in the terminal, you might find it very usable. If you don’t, it’s unlikely to become any more user-friendly; it’s a personal project for personal needs, and whilst Prince is free for personal use, it’s $4800 to install on a server. You see my issue.
So there you are. I made a machine to generate books out of my Pinboard links. Personal archiving feels like an important topic right now – see the Personal Digital Archiving conference, Aaron and Maciej’s contributions to it, not to mention tools like Singly. Books are another way to preserve digital objects. These books contain the reference to another point in the network (but not that point itself) – but they capture something far more important, and more personal.

Free: The Guggenheim Puts 65 Modern Art Books Online | Open Culture
february 2012 by milo
On January 19th, Apple apparently plans to roll into The Guggenheim in New York City and announce plans to disrupt the textbook market. Big news? Maybe. But let’s not lose sight of another Guggenheim digital initiative.
In recent days, the museum has made 65 art catalogues available online, all free of charge. The catalogues offer an intellectual and visual introduction to the work of Alexander Calder, Edvard Munch, Francis Bacon, Gustav Klimt & Egon Schiele, and Kandinsky. Plus there are other texts (e.g., Masterpieces of Modern Art and Abstract Expressionists Imagists) that tackle meta movements and themes.
Now let me give you a few handy instructions to get you started. 1.) Select a text from the collection. 2.) Click the “Read Catalogue Online” button. 3.) Start reading the book in the pop-up browser, and use the controls at the very bottom of the pop-up browser to move through the book. 4.) If you have any problems accessing these texts, you can find alternate versions on Archive.org, which lets you download books in multiple formats – ePUB, PDF and the rest.

Books on the Craft of Writing: to-read list | Nicole Basaraba's Uni-Verse-City
january 2012 by milo
Welcome to Writers’ Uni-Verse-City (or WUVC for short because every university has an acronym), a place where writers/bloggers can meet to discuss the craft of writing in the Internet age. I want to learn what it takes to make it in the world of writing and publishing and nowadays there is a wealth of information on the web. WUVC will involve independent research, setting a curriculum and hopefully finding other participants (like you – readers/bloggers/writers) to: chip in, give tips, suggest books and other materials for study, teach me the ways of the warrior writer, and offer to guest post here at Uni-Verse-City (contact: annotationseditorial@gmail.com).
So I think I need more official self-determined course material for Writers’ Uni-Verse-City. I have been picking up a craft book every now and then usually based on the buzz I’ve seen about it on the web. Hey, its a great way to pick books. So now that I’ve finished reading Plot & Structure by James Scott Bell, which I’m currently reviewing, it will soon be time to crack open another one.

Systemwechsel in Deutschland - Schriftenreihe (Bd. 1212)
january 2012 by milo

Tinderbox: The Tinderbox Way
december 2011 by milo
Tinderbox is a tool for notes, a personal content assistant. The Tinderbox Way takes a close look at Tinderbox and its underlying ideas, exploring not just the program's mechanics but also its design and its spirit.
From the elements of writing more effective notes to the frontiers of information farming, from the classroom and conference hall to the research laboratory, The Tinderbox Way explores a new approach to working with and representing interlinked ideas.
From Chapter One:
Tinderbox is designed to help you write things down, find them, think about them, and share them. Tinderbox is an assistant. Its meant to help, to facilitate. Its not a methodology or a code. Its a way to write things down, link them up, and share them. Its a chisel, guided by your hand and your intelligence.
Tinderbox is personal in another sense, as well; unlike most corporate software today, Tinderbox was designed and implemented by a person not by a committee, a corporation, or a focus group. That person is me: Mark Bernstein. I designed Tinderbox, and wrote just about every line of the tens of thousands of lines that make Tinderbox run. Tinderbox is the product of an individual vision. It wasnt written to meet requirements or specs or to adhere to business rules. Along the way, there have been thousands of decisions engineering decisions, artistic decisions, operational decisions. In the end, I made the choices.

Archive of Writer David Foster Wallace Now Open for Research
november 2011 by milo
AUSTIN, Texas—The archive of David Foster Wallace (1962-2008), author of "Infinite Jest" (1996), "The Broom of the System" (1987), "Girl with Curious Hair" (1989) and numerous collections of stories and essays, is now open at the Harry Ransom Center. A finding aid for the collection can be accessed online.
The Ransom Center, a humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin, acquired Wallace's archive last year. The collection is made up of 34 document boxes and 8 oversize folders and is divided into three main sections: works, personal and career-related materials and copies of works by Don DeLillo. The works section covers the period between 1984 and 2006 and includes material related to Wallace's novels, short stories, essays and magazine articles. The personal and career materials section covers 1971 through 2008 and includes juvenilia, teaching materials and business correspondence. Most of the correspondence in the collection is between Wallace and his editors and is related to his work. The third, and smallest, section includes photocopy typescripts of three works by Don DeLillo, one of which, "Underworld," contains extensive handwritten annotations by Wallace. DeLillo's archive also resides at the Ransom Center.

Life, living, can be complex. There's work, family, and that big bucket of everything else. Hectic doesn't come close to defining the pace of modern life. And yet within this whirlwind it's often the simple things that bring us the greatest joy — if we could only find them in the clutter of our lives. It may not be necessary to give it all up and live in a cave, but it can sometimes seem like a good idea.
