Automator workflow of the month: Add Spotlight comments | Macworld
As we waltz through our digital lives, we tend to accumulate files and folders, and folders full of files. While a portion of this accumulation is the kind of effluvia that we won’t need next week, much less five years from now, for many of us a large chunk of it is data that will be as important tomorrow as it is today. Think long term business projects, financial files, and databases, for example. If you’re an organized person, you’ve created a logical file structure that allows you to locate files many years from now. If you’re not so organized, you have to search for what you want.

In both my work and personal life, I regularly need to share files with others, and the best and most flexible method that I have found is through Dropbox’s excellent Public folder. There are several limitations to this method however: Files in your Dropbox folder aren’t secure, and are publicly searchable; Files in your Dropbox folder become stale and require regular deletion to not consume your space and create clutter; Getting a group of files into your Dropbox and sharing it with others is a tiresome process if done regularly.

re:publica 12: best of des re:port-Tracks
Die Plattform will dreierlei bieten: 1.

My first time: Writing the Lizzie Bennet Diaries webseries
Remember your first time? Maybe it was choppy, maybe it was oddly charming, but it was probably years ago. Not *that* first time. The first time you watched a webseries or YouTube video. Well, I’m going to tell you about my first time writing one. I’ve just signed on as a writer for The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, based on one of the most beloved works of English literature: Pride & Prejudice, by Jane Austin. My first episode was shot last Saturday!

New TED ebook warns of the demise of guys
Have boys bottomed out? A new TED Book says yes. The culprit: the rampant overuse of video games and online porn. In their provocative ebook The Demise of Guys: Why Boys Are Struggling and What We Can Do About It, celebrated psychologist Philip G. Zimbardo and Nikita Duncan say that an addiction to video games and online porn have created a generation of shy, socially awkward, emotionally removed, and risk-adverse young men who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school, and employment. Taking a critical look at a problem which is tearing at families and societies everywhere, The Demise of Guys suggests that our young men are suffering from a new form of “arousal addiction,” and introduce a bold new plan for getting them back on track. The book is based on a popular TED Talk which Zimbardo did in 2011, and includes extensive research as well as a TED-exclusive survey that drew responses from more than 20,000 men. We recently spoke with Zimbardo and Duncan about their ideas.

Keyboard Maestro Resize Image Macro
Here’s a macro to take advantage of the new Keyboard Maestro 5.3 Image actions. This macro processes an image (or several) selected in the Finder. If the image is larger than 600px wide, a new scaled copy is created that is 600px wide. But the trick is to scale both dimensions relatively, not just squash the image on the X-axis.

I’m just catching up on my Keyboard Maestro reading. There’s some good stuff happening with it these days. Eugene Gordin has been evolving some really nice macros to fit some unique use cases. This one zips a group of files and shares them on Dropbox for a limited time. Hazel does some file clean up at a set interval to remove the shared files. A really nice way to do it. How to make money online

The first step is to stop Googling things like, "how to make money online." Not because you shouldn't want to make money online, but because the stuff you're going to find by doing that is going to help you lose money online. Sort of like asking a casino owner how to make money in Vegas...
Don't pay anyone for simple and proven instructions on how to achieve this goal. In particular, don't pay anyone to teach you how to write or sell manuals or ebooks about how to make money online.

High-priority projects in Omnifocus - Blog - 1klb
Today I want to tell the Internet about a fun little hack I found for the Omni group's excellent task management application, OmniFocus. In fact, this is a hack based on one of the methods that Kourosh Dini outlines in his ebook, Creating Flow with Omnifocus.

Dini outlines two different ways of keeping track of tasks you need to do today:

Filtering by flagged status: pick the tasks you want to do, and flag them. When you view your flagged tasks, you're viewing tasks you want to do today.
Filtering by start date: pick the tasks you want to do, and set their start date to today. When you view your tasks grouped by start date, you'll have a group ("Start today") with all the tasks you want to do today.

MacScripter / Make scripting Safari pure fun with the help of DEVONtechnologies
Have you ever viewed a website in Safari and wanted to automatically download all linked PDF documents instead of manually clicking onto the links? Or get the embedded web videos and images? For me, the answer is definitely YES. Unfortunately, most (free) Mac web browser simply don't feature advanced AppleScript support. Of course, they let you create new documents and tabs or even execute Javascript with Apple's unique language of automation. But as soon as your script gets mature and wants to grab all GIF images of a website, you will be deeply disappointed about the few available AppleScript commands most browsers offer.

DuckDuckGo !Bang
DuckDuckGo enables you to search 100s of other sites directly. Just use this dropdown next to the search box. As you use it, your most frequented sites will automatically be displayed at the top. Or you can type in a command like '!amazon bags', which will take you to Amazon.com and auto-search it for 'bags'. We call these commands !bangs, and this syntax works for 100s of sites: Most big sites work, e.g. !youtube (see full list below) Most generic keywords work too, e.g. !images There are also shorter versions, e.g. !g (google) !i (images) !yt (youtube) !ducky or '! ' or '' will take you to the first result. !safeoff will run a search with safe search off.

DuckDuckGo Bang Macro
Prompted by the recently released Bang On iOS app1, I decided to make a macro for Keyboard Maestro that could accomplish the same thing with Safari. This macro is really just a series of scripts, so it could easily be converted to a LaunchBar plugin. The macro grabs the current URL and looks for a query string. It then converts the query string to one of several DuckDuckGo bang searches.

Adobe Lightroom Instagram Presets | Casey Mac Photo
It seems like everyone from your friends to climbers at Everest base camp are using the popular social photo sharing app, Instagram, to edit and share their photos. Instagram’s recent move of going from an iPhone-only based app to now being available for Android has nearly doubled the user-base, and now Facebook has just purchased the app, guaranteeing even more popularity. I’ve been asked often by clients if I can edit their photos “like Instagram”. Well, now you can do it yourself.

For this purpose, I’ve created Lightroom presets for all 17 of Instragram’s filters for easy editing of your photos in Adobe’s Lightroom application. Simply install the preset, and with one click your photos can look like you applied your favorite Instagram filter on your phone. At just $5, these filters are well-priced and cost no more than a latte or an app on your phone. Any money that I make from these sales will fund my travels to photograph beautiful places around the world.

However, would you ever believe that you could learn from the professors of many of these colleges straight from your Mac and iOS device, as if you were in person? It’s possible with iTunes U. Despite iTunes U being available, not everyone takes advantage of this educational gift from Apple. Today, we will take a tour of iTunes U, showing you who’s teaching, and how to make the most of your learning experience.

Tictoc: Simple Time Tracking In Your Menu Bar
Keeping track of the time you spend during certain activities can be useful for many reasons. The most obvious one that comes to mind is if you are a freelancer that needs to bill by the hour, and therefore need some proof of how much time you spent doing certain tasks. But that’s certainly not all, even if you don’t charge by the hour, it’s still useful to know how much time you’re spending doing certain tasks so that you can then refine your workflow or be aware of how much time you are investing (or wasting).

How To Automatically Download TV Shows As Soon As They’ve Aired (Or Turn Your PC Into A TiVo) | Lifehacker Australia
Video content is readily available online for you to download, but the download process isn’t always as simple and automated as using something like a TiVO to simply schedule the content you want to watch. Fortunately, there are some great tools to help you do that with both BitTorrent and Usenet. Here’s how to set them up and turn your computer into an internet PVR.

Note: Note: This tutorial is going to mention Usenet. We’re aware that a lot of you have a problem with that. We’ve discussed this issue before (see “Regarding the First Rule and Other Issues”) so we’re not going to discuss it here.

BitTorrent and Usenet are tools that allow you to download files easily. Some of those files are TV shows and they’re not necessarily legal to download. What you choose to download with the software described in this tutorial is entirely up to you. You accept responsibility for your actions if you choose to download content you are not legally authorised to download. We’re going to provide you with the information necessary to set up and use the described software, but your ethical and legal decisions will be left up to you.

Use Hazel To Magically Process Downloaded PDFs | Tips To Learn How To Go Paperless | DocumentSnap Paperless Blog
You know how sometimes you come across a tip that is so clever you are both happy to have learned it and annoyed that you didn’t think of it yourself at the same time?

That’s how I felt sitting in Katie Floyd’s Going Paperless presentation at Macworld 2011 (more on my Macworld roundup here).

It is well known that I love a little Mac app called Hazel that allows you to create rules to perform almost any function on your computer. One great use of Hazel is to move all the PDFs that you are downloading from the web now that you are going paperless.

Katie’s tip is to use the Source URL of the downloaded PDF as a basis for doing the processing. Brilliant! Have no idea what on earth I just said? No worries, I’m about to go through it.

Module of the Week: Puppet Module Tool - Part 1 | Puppet Labs
This week we’re going to begin our coverage of the Puppet Module Tool (PMT). The PMT is the command-line interface to the Puppet Forge—an online repository for re-usable Puppet modules. As of Puppet 2.7.14 and Puppet Enterprise 2.5 PMT is no longer a separate product; it’s now part of Puppet Core. What this means for you is that PMT is ready-to-go out of the box.

New features
The latest version of PMT offers a few new features over the previous stand-alone tool:

Search the Puppet Forge from the command line
List, upgrade, and uninstall modules
Automatically resolve and install module dependencies
In this post we’ll take a look at the new search and list commands.

PMT Search
The search command searches a repository for modules whose names, descriptions, or keywords match the provided search term. For example, if we search for the term “tomcat”, we would get the following output:
