DeDRM AppleScript for Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7
yesterday by mikael
This AppleScript includes and combines the python scripts for removing the DRM from Mobipocket (ancient and modern), Kindle and Kindle for Mac (Mobipocket and Topaz formats), eReader, Barnes & Noble ePub, Adobe Adept ePub and Adobe Adept PDFs. There is no need to install Python (it uses the default installation that comes with Mac OS X). There is no need to install PyCrypto (the new python scripts use OpenSSL that comes with Mac OS X). There is even no need to install the Mac OS X developer tools (everything needed is installed with the standard Mac OS X installation). The current version of the AppleScript application is 5.1 and it can be found in the large tools zip archive mentioned in the first post of this blog.

Most probably, you have many duplicate files that consume valuable disk space with no purpose. Gemini can help you find and remove them with the same pleasure you listen to the music or watch movies. Isn't that what your Mac is for?

Thenextweb.com: Instagram worth a half billion? Sure, and I’m Mick Jagger
7 weeks ago by mikael
Here’s the rub: Instgram is a fucking photo app that a competent team could build at a weekend hackathon. Its revenue model: presumably selling user data down the road. After all, its users aren’t going to start paying for something that they used to get for free, and that they can get for free elsewhere. Think about how many damn photo apps there are in the market. Think about it again. One last time.

Apple.com: 1-Bit Camera

Take pictures in superior lo-bit style with 1-Bit Camera! In an age of ever-increasing megapixels and bit depth it is now painfully clear; It is not the number of pixels that matters, but the quality of those individual pixels! With 1-BIT CAMERA you can see and record your world in one bit clarity, processed with dithering algorithms pioneered by Bill Atkinson and Bryce Bayer. Those are only fancy names, of course – but! – you have probably laid eyes on their immortalized legacy as per the awe-inspiring imaging seen on 1980s desktop publishing computers and on 8-bit handheld camera accessories, respectively. Wow!

Xda-developers.com: [APP] Tinfoil for Facebook
9 weeks ago by mikael
There are ways for them to "track" the sites you visit on the browser if you log in to *.facebook.com and stay logged in on your browser. Don't know the specific details, but one way they can do this is by using the "Like" buttons on some of the sites, they can get the user id of the logged in session (cookies) as well as the site you are visiting, and track you. Anyways, Tinfoil for Facebook has its own CookieManager, so that you can log in using this app to *.facebook.com and not through the browser, so that whenever you browse sites on the regular browser, there's almost no way for them to track you. Again, I don't know the full details of how and if they track you, and nobody knows EXACTLY how they do it except for them, I'm just trying to prevent this as much as possible, somehow, I don't trust facebook. Also, this app doesn't allow them to use location, unless you enable it, and a couple of other things.

Macupdate.com: TCPBlock for Mac - Lightweight and fast application firewall.
12 weeks ago by mikael
I've been using TCPBlock for 6 weeks now, and have concluded that it blows Little Snitch and Hands Off! right out of the water. It has alerted me to MANY, MANY callouts that have been happening right under Little Snitch's nose ever since I started using it 5 years ago. I have studied LS to death, reinstalled it 6 or 7 times just to rebuild my rules lists from scratch in order to figure out how so much traffic get’s past it, and subjected my rules lists and standard operating procedures to the scrutiny of serious IT professionals and a couple of hard core hackers, so now I'm extremely confident that Little Snitch's weaknesses and outright failings are indeed Little Snitch's — not mine, as I let myself believe for far too long. TCPBlock is so much less complicated yet more effective than both LS and HO that I spent a couple of weeks second guessing whether my conclusions are as accurate and stark as I think they are, only to arrive at the same verdicts all over again. So I have officially deactivated LS and now rely entirely on TCPB. If anyone else has had the same sort of doubts about Little Snitch or Hands Off over the years, do yourself a favor and install TCPBlock, then run it side-by-side with Little Snitch (or Hands Off!) for a week or two. After you get over the short learning-hump, you'll be amazed.

Ubuntu.com: Ubuntu for Android
february 2012 by mikael
Ubuntu for Android requires minimal custom hardware enablement, allowing fast and cost-efficient core integration. It requires a core based on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or any subsequent version. Ubuntu and Android share the same kernel. When docked, the Ubuntu OS boots and runs concurrently with Android. This allows both mobile and desktop functionality to co-exist in different runtimes. Shared services and applications are delivered using a Convergence API module which ensures the tight integration between desktop and mobile environments. Work is balanced across the cores of the phone. When the handset is not docked, both CPU cores transfer their full power to Android.

Mobile Sites vs. Apps: The Coming Strategy Shift
february 2012 by mikael
As of this writing, there's no contest: ship mobile apps if you can afford it. Our usability studies with mobile devices clearly show that users perform better with apps than with mobile sites. (Mobile sites have higher measured usability than desktop sites when used on a phone, but mobile apps score even higher.) The empirical data is really all you need to know. It's a fact that apps beat mobile sites in testing. To plan a mobile strategy, you don't need to know why the winner is best, but I'll try to explain it anyway. Mobile applications are more usable than mobile-optimized websites because only limited optimization is possible during website design. An app can target the specific limitations and abilities of each individual device much better than a website can while running inside a browser.

PHP Comment System
january 2012 by mikael
To place comments on pages with this comment system you use a simple <script> tag, it automatically detects which page it is on, creates a directory for the comments named after the page and displays comments for just that page. There are "Name", "E-mail Address", "Website", "Password", and "Comment" fields, all but the "Comment" field are optional and remember what you entered even if you navigate away from the page (using browser "cookies" which expire a month after the last comment posted). Simple HTML tags supported, URLs automatically become links, referrer checking, and permalinks. When a user posts a comment, a .TXT file is created in a directory specified in the script, default is "/comments". The first comment is called "1.txt", second is called "2.txt", and so on. When deleting a comment you or a visitor will just be deleting the corresponding file. There are only two things that need to be done before this comment system will be fit for the job: 1. A way to ensure that only certain people can post with certain names (i.e. No visitor can use the name "Webmaster" or "TildeHash" in my case.), 2. Clean up and document code.

Acoustic Ruler
november 2011 by mikael
Measure distances of up to 25 meters (82 feet) with Acoustic Ruler Pro for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (App Store Link). Scroll down for the details or watch the two videos showing the two different operation modes first. Please note that while the resolution of the measurements may be as low as 1mm, the precision usually is not. While I have taken great care to make the app as reliable as possible, there are simply too many factors affecting the measurement process and the precision. That is why I want to be clear about one thing: there is absolutely no warranty that the measurements taken with Acoustic Ruler Pro are correct. Since the app works by sending and receiving sound, you’ll obviously get the best results when using it in an environment that is not too loud. [ http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3228256 ]

Cnet.com: Review: Drive defragmentation and optimization with iDefrag
october 2011 by mikael
Apple's philosophy for hard drive optimization and defragmentation is explained in this knowledgebase article and is basically that they do not recommend it unless it is absolutely needed (I tend to agree). To combat the majority of file fragmentation, OS X already has robust built-in anti-fragmentation technologies that prevent fragmentation of files on creation and use; however, they are only applied to files that are under 20MB in size. Because of this, defragmentation will provide the most benefit to those who regularly manage a large number of files that are over 20MB in size, but it will also help for those who have nearly full drives that are regularly used (e.g. Time Machine volumes).
